Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended!!! Review: Our family was stuck in a rut of the same old dinners, frozen dinners, too much eating out... SO I decided to try this! I had the book for about a year but never touched it... Oh I wish I had! There's always something good to look forward to at meal time now. Our daughter is a bit on the picky side, as all kids (AND adults) can be, but she even liked a few of the recipes! Here's my synopsis....PRAISES: WONDERFUL RECIPES Preparing for dinner is a snap Cleaning is easier Saves time Healthier eating Saves money in the long run because you aren't eating out as much! Flexible recipes (e.i. supstitute one meat for another) 3 two-week plans (one is low-fat) 2 month plans Very well organized Step by step instructions Has shopping lists already made for you Gives instructions on organizing to make up your own plans! Easy directions! Semi-negatives: unless you have most of the spices, beginning will cost a little more, some of the recipes need a little tweeking (minor things), unless you have help, stick to the 2 weekers because the month long ones are tough (but good! I may try it one day myself!) OVERALL: LOVE IT! We will be eating a lot of the recipes for years to come! They're great! It's even improved my cooking skills! Get it and try it if you're stuck in a rut or in fast food lines or just need new recipes to spice up your own meals! I can't say enough so I'll stop :) Leslie Harris :)
Rating: Summary: Once a Month Cooking Review: I have the original cook book. It is splattered and battered. I have gone through and cooked up a storm as suggested on a few occassions. However I find that the best use for the book is to pull together quick everyday suppers. It has the best brisket and sloppy joe receipes anywhere. I can only imaging that the new edition is better than the first.
Rating: Summary: A can of this and a package of that. . . Review: With time at a premium, I could just fill my freezer with prepared fajita mix, lasagnas, or Hungry Man dinners from the supermarket in order to have meals in minutes at the end of a long work day. I was looking for recipes and a system to prepare nutritious meals in advance -- meals that would be healthier for us and taste more homemade than the prepared foods -- and hoped this book would provide it. The recipes in this book, however, use a lot of processed foods, just like Swanson's or other convenience food products. I was pretty dissappointed in them. However, if you and your family enjoy frozen or boxed casseroles, then you will probably enjoy these meals. I can see growing families who already 'go to the freezer and get the box' getting a lot out of these recipes and this system. I should also note that these are budget-conscious meals -- again, a benefit for growing families.
Rating: Summary: Could have been so much better! Review: I am really "into" the idea of once a month cooking, but I was really disappointed in this book. First, the reader is knocked over the head with the Bible. I didn't buy this book to read a Bible verse on every page, and I was offended that there was no indication that this would be the case. I am not a Christian, and I don't care that the authors are. Further, I found the "table talk" chapter of the book (a list of family centered conversation starters) pretentious. How does the author know what goes on around my diner table. Second, I find the plan more difficult than the author claims. The plan is basically 15 to 30 different and unrelated meals cooked over the course of one day. I would rather cook two or three of a recipe and store it than one per month. Very little information on doubling recipes as well. Third, I really don't think that kids would eat this stuff. I mean, we are trying to feed a family here. Kids don't care about crab stuffed shells and London broil. I really don't think that this food is family friendly. There is some good general information in this book, but not enough to justify the price. There are lots of good books out there about once a month cooking. I suggest you find one of them.
Rating: Summary: very good! Review: I found this book helpful... it was one of 2 books i bought to start once a month cooking. truthfully, i couldnt manage cooking all at once for a month BUT there is info about other options.. (doubling tripling recipes) and soon (very soon) i had a months worth of food. It was REALLY nice to be able to pull out a varity of foods and everyone could eat something different. I think this book would be helpful in getting started and even if the recipes werent all things you would like there is good info on freezing food in general (ie what freezes well)
Rating: Summary: Once-A-Month-Cooking Convert Review: This is a great book to help you organize your meal preparation and save time. I was skeptical because so many similar books have recipes and ingredients my family and I just wouldn't eat. Mom was a from-scratch-only cook and I developed the same snobery - which has made cooking hard for many-a-year. Once A Month Cooking has taken me over the hump, with delicious and nutritious recipes. Each recipe section offers plenty of variety, so you're not eating chicken or hamburger for 30 days. The master ingredients list cut grocery shopping to 70 minutes. The easy to follow cooking plan and simple recipes, put hot home-cooked food on the table nightly with a minimum amount of preparation and fuss. Hallaleuah! I'm so happy with this book that I've shared it with 3 friends. We are planning a cook-for-a-month day together to supply 3 families with meals. One of them said, "If you ever get depressed, you can cheer yourself up by thinking 'I have a whole month worth of meals in the freezer.'"
Rating: Summary: Simplifies the OAMC process Review: Good book, excellent information for singles & marrieds, both with and without children. My sister-in-law is expecting this fall, so I'll be making a little extra in the upcoming months to help keep her freezer stocked for the first month or so. I'm an organic/whole foods kind of girl, working on losing a few pounds and incorporating more vegetables and soy-based protein into my diet. This book makes it a bit difficult to stick to that, but I substitute low-fat, low-cal and veggie where possible.
Rating: Summary: Long time fan Review: I bought the original Once-a-Month Cooking in 1986 and have used the idea and the recipes ever since. I still have the book when other cookbooks have been weeded out of the bookshelf. If this book is as good it will become another stable.
Rating: Summary: Software Version Would Be Even Better Review: Our in-laws introduced us to this book, and so far the meals are great. Would be even more useful in a software version, maybe select meals and have it compile your shopping lists and cooking plans automatically. That would save even more time, cut my wife from having to write out the shopping lists and use of a bit of the time saved by cooking in advance. As for the religious aspect, if you are looking to find or lose religion in a recipe book, you have other problems.
Rating: Summary: once a month cooking Review: The Lagerborg/Wilson OAMC cooking revolutionized my life at home. Yes, preparation day was crazy, but it made the next 6 weeks of evenings calm and enjoyable as I knew what was on the dinner table would be hot, nutritious, and homeade. Not every recipe was a winner with my family, but who has a cookbook that wins with every single recipe? The point is that the system works and what your family likes, you do again, and adjust. It also made me do more research and find more freezer-friendly make-ahead recipes for variety sake. I recommend it whole-heartedly and found that there was absolutely no "preachyness" about it, as one reviewer noted. Buy it for more time with your family that is not consumed with cooking meals when you are tired from a days work.
