Rating: Summary: If you love to cook, you must read this book! Review: I stumbled upon this book quite by accident at my public library. Since I have a busy family of 5 kids and homeschool 3 of them, I am always looking for ways to save time.By following the shopping list, and using my coupons and club cards I saved over $102.00 on my grocery bill! The fact that everything is made in advance means no more last minute trips to the store for one or two things and walking out having spent valuable time in line and an extra $75.00. Now I just run to the dairy for fresh milk and eggs once or twice a week and that's it. The first time I tried the recipes my daughters helped out in the kitchen and it turned into a fun learning experience and quality family time. The recipes are easy to follow and well thought out. I didn't have to add anything at all to spice up the flavor. Most importantly, the kids are hooked to, since they are responsible for kitchen cleanup. There are fewer nightly dishes. No more fighting over who has to scrub the pans. Our favorites so far are the Pizza Rollups, Chicken Cacciatore, London Broil, and Split Pea Soup. Once you get hooked, by the CD-Rom version too. There you can modify the quantity based on the number of people you are serving, as well as add your own favorite family recipes. Now you can have delicious home-cooked meals everynight of the week with much less expense, less time and lower calories. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Tasty Food, could be customized for lower fat Review: I had seen the previous edition of this in a library, and had never tried it. When I received a copy as a gift, I read it through once again, and tried it...my family loves the meals, and I love not being concerned with what to serve every night, since I had pulled a packet out of the freezer the night before, or even that morning. The low-fat menu is very tasty, and I was able to convert the others to a more healthy base, and still keep the taste...after all, who really uses that much meat in whatever they make? My family of four loves the variety, and the pizza roll ups, and calzones are favorites. As they say in the book, as you do the program a few times, you will figure out what works for you, and what to drop. Overall, a great timesaver.
Rating: Summary: Less Stress, Better Food! Review: As the mother of 3 year old quadruplets, I have found this book to be a lifesaver! I can cook all of my meals once a month, and spend more time every night with my kids and husband. And you don't have to compromise on the quality of supper--it all tastes delicious! I own the first edition, and have borrowed the second edition from a friend. They were great, but this third edition has even more recipes, including more low fat selections. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever wished they had more time in a day.
Rating: Summary: A long day of cooking was time WELL spent. Review: This is an excellent book for any busy family. My neighbor and I actually shopped and cooked together, so we both now have a 30 day supply of main dishes in our freezers. The quantities were doubled, but the time spent wasn't much more than if we'd only cooked for ourselves. The book is well laid out, the recipes easy, economical and appealing to all ages. My 11-yr-old son is especially appreciative of having a freezer full of "good" food! A surprise side benefit: if I'm not home but the book is laid out and ingredients are in the refrigerator thawed, there is a very good chance that someone will get moving on putting dinner together. As with most busy families, we were eating out or from the drive through more often than I'd like to admit. Now, with the main dish prepared and ready, we eat at home, around the table AS A FAMILY, much more often than before. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a way to cut down on the stress that comes with: "What's for dinner?"
Rating: Summary: Excellent time saving menus Review: In anticipating major foot surgery, I purchased this book to prepare and freeze 2 -3 weeks worth of dinners so all my husband would have to do is reheat a meal each evening. Each meal makes more that enough for just the two of us. I was able to fix a different meal each night, and freeze what was leftover. Everything was execellent and very simple to fix. The flavors stayed after freezing and reheating. We especially liked the spaghetti sauce. I will never buy spaghetti sauce again ! The menu ideas were appreciated also. I found that I can substitute lower fat ingredients in some cases without lessening any flavor. This will be one cookbook I will use quite frequently.
Rating: Summary: Can get your feet wet with the two-week plan first. Review: Originally I was intimidated by the thought of cooking in a concentrated amount of time for a whole month's worth of meals. I found the two-week plan a great way to warm up to the idea of cooking once-a-month. I would recommend this book to anyone who finds it hard to think about "what's for dinner" and really has no idea! It affords you a great deal of time not wondering what to cook. You've already planned and cooked your meals for the month. Even if you decide once-a-month cooking is not "your thing", there are several good recipes for every family. Give it a try, we did and we love it.
Rating: Summary: This book revolutionized this busy working mom's life!! Review: I bought this book a year ago because with two teenagers and a newborn, I just couldn't get dinner on the table at a decent hour and was too pooped to clean up after it got there. This book has been an abolute lifesaver. Too many books tell you to get organized and use a meal plan--but let's face it; if I had time to sit around planning meals, I'd have time to cook in the first place. This book does it all for you. Shopping lists, meal plans, step by step directions for cooking day so that at the end, you've got 14 to 30 meals just by following their directions. And the recipes are delicious--I serve them to company all the time and no one knows that I didn't just spend hours in the kitchen. At the end, clean up is a snap when I throw away the ziploc bag or aluminum pan (which the teenagers love). I'll never go back to cooking one meal at the time!! I only regret that it isn't in print now. Please tell me there will either be a reprint or new edition because about 5 of my friends are waiting for copies.
Rating: Summary: 5 hours of cooking makes a smooth month of dinners! Review: We love this cooking plan. The book includes shopping lists and delicious recipes. Freeze the sauces in zip-locks, then simply heat later and add fresh pasta or rice and salads. Unfortunately, the publ. tells us it is out of print. get it while you can. Im buying 4 today.
Rating: Summary: This made me a better cook; I have more time with my family Review: I love the Once-a-Month system! It's a difficult task to shop, prepare, and cook so many meals at a time, but when it's done, and I know I don't have to worry about dinner for the next MONTH...it's so worth it!! For a family of 4-5 to eat dinner for a month, we paid $139.00! What a deal! It is important that you get very organized before hand , and I would suggest no more than 3 or 4 in a cooking group. The recipes are very good and there's a good variety. I have learned how to be a better cook, making things more home-made instead of pre-made, boxed things. It feels so good giving my family nutritious , great-tasting meals each night, and not ever settling for fast food anymore. The hour before dinner is no longer stressful...now it's FUN, to try something new and easy. We are going to be training other people to do this so that we have a few groups going on at the same time, supporting and encouraging each other! I love it.
Rating: Summary: Helpful book Review: I wish the recipes weren't so heavy on using pre-made and pre-packaged ingredients. The recipes were too expensive for my grocery budget, but I use the method outlined in this book with my own recipes. I recently joined an on-line e-mail discussion of once-a-month cooking methods---lots of tips, recipes and ideas from other freezer meal cooks.
