Rating: Summary: Boring - Why bother? Review: Nice cover, but what about the food? I've dabbled in vegan-ism, but this book turned me off. Try purchasing a cookbook with some flavor!
Rating: Summary: The New Vegan Bible Review: I love this book so much! Not only does it have an extensive collection of awesome recipes, it has tips on household items, and vegan "no-nos". Plus it's really cute. They have a really great website too... I reccomend this book to anyone who wants to explore vegan cooking.
Rating: Summary: The best of the best Review: I have been vegetarian for over a year now, and you would be amazed at the fat content of some vegetarian cook books. The excessive use of cheese and butter, milk, etc. completely turned me off, but this book is a masterpeice of delicious yet healthy foods! I don't even look at my other cook books anymore, there are so many stellar recipes in here, it has kept me busy already for 2 months! Tonight I try the alphabet lentil soup, yum! :)
Rating: Summary: The best Vegan cookbook ever!! Review: I use this book over and over! It's so tattered and stained from my constant use that I'm just about ready to buy a second copy!! Besides great vegan foods, this book is also a great reference for vegan substitutions for non-vegan food and household products. It has great recipies for beauty products, household cleaners, and even pet treats (I made these for my dog and he LOVES them!!) All my favorite recipies have come from this book and I'd recommend it to anyone, vegan or not!
Rating: Summary: Great Stuff! Review: My favorite cookbook!! This has great, practical, food (including lots of simple and oh so very tasty deserts!). And it's completely vegan!! As a vegan, I've found that it can be hard to fine simple recipes that are tasty and pleasing to your average meat-eating crowd as well as the vegans. I give this book five stars!! Better than any I've seen, it's worth the buy!!
Rating: Summary: BUY THIS BOOK! Review: This is a very useful cookbook filled with "normal" recipes. The dishes are easy to prepare, and the ingredients are not unusual. (When unusual ingredients are listed, alternatives are offered.) There is a wide variety of recipes, and all that I've tried have been quite good. I highly recommend this book and Jannequin Bennett's VERY VEGETARIAN.
Rating: Summary: Fun in the Kitchen Review: Ah! my favorite cookbook. It has lots of handy tips and ideas. It's fun, friendly and easy to use. The Shephard's pie is savory and the Balck Bean Salsa is always a hit at parties. Coconut milk is so easy and so good, but the rice milk is not so much fun and not so good. I use this cookbook so much that it's now falling apart (I've had this book for about 2 years). There are lots of quick and easy recipes and great suggestions.
Rating: Summary: no one will take this book off my hands Review: Even the most fanatical vegans among my friends get tired of the pedantic (and awkwardly written!) tone of this book. Further, there is no table of contents and instead of a recipe index there is a glossary of animal products. Thus, there is no way to look up recipes short of leafing through entire chapters. This is nearly impossible for vegan dishes since practically any recipe can be either a side dish or an entree, and many could double as sauces, stews or spreads.Everything is reasonably yummy, but quite simple and limited in range. It is typical non-gourmet vegetarian cookery: lots of conventional dishes where all the naughty ingredients have been replaced with soy products, lots of one-pot concoctions, and several pages of... smoothies! (Who can't invent their own smoothies?) The attempts at Asian fusion cuisine are pretty amateur (recommending stir-frying in olive oil? Woks are supposed to be HOT and olive oil smokes and tastes strong!). The only parts of this book that really impressed me were the recipes for mock animal salads (chicken salad, egg salad, etc). Very good imitations, but made almost entirely of soy so I feel unbalanced eating them. For beautiful, diverse recipes that are most often vegan, I'd recommend the Rebar Modern Food Cookbook instead.
Rating: Summary: Great for beginners Review: I must say, I was skeptical, a recently converted vegan and a college student I wanted easy, cheap meals that would taste good, and this book really has a lot of them. It is good for staples and great when you don't make a list and have lots of random veggies hanging around with some tofu and you don't know what to do with it. One of the best things about this book though, is that they list things in the back that perhaps you didn't know involved animals, but does, very helpful for those who go for soy cheese at conventional grocery stores and don't realize sodium caseinate is from cows! I enjoy pictures with my recipe books, and this doesn't have any, which was dissapointing, but I was won over anyway. Every meal I have made has been delicious. A great investment.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I am so happy to have found this book. I have many vegan cookbooks and none compare to the recipes in this book! It gives great tips on things to do with children and detailed explanations of instructions. I highly recommend this to anyone, vegan or not!
