Rating: Summary: Get up, get up, get out of bed... Review: After a stroke at a young age, I've been reading every book I could find on getting well, getting motivated, getting out of bed and getting on with life. Not only is this the best book I have read in that regard but I have never laughed so hard in my life. I am trying Duff's approach and have dubbed myself a "Duff girl". I now recommend or give this boodk to everyone. The great thing is that its a book anyone could read and enjoy and laugh through no matter if they have had a bad day or they have cancer. I even gave one to my doctor.
Rating: Summary: Good Stuff Review: Someone recommended this book to me, probably because I am a physician. Although I will never be able to see the world through the eyes of a handsome and gifted model and actress, her insight and perspective has a message for all of us. Additionally, this is a well told story about people we think we know and worth the read. I particularly liked her uncompromised look at the people and system that provides us health care - this should be mandatory reading during every physician's medical education.
Rating: Summary: Someone who needs the courage of Karen Duffy, and someone wh Review: I think alot of you who gave this book a bad review, dont understand how something that may not intrest you, is the biggest thing to someone with this disiese. I was diognosed about 2 years ago. I have since been in the hospital 15 times. I have 2 children and a wondeful husband, who are having the hardest time seeing me sick all the time. I live in a small town in Wyoming and the doctors here have no idea about my disease. I drive 3 hours one way to Utah to see some specialists. The agony of not knowing about my illness, and not knowing what is going to happen to me is more than me and my family can take. I respect the courage of Karen Duffy because I have come to a point of giving up, thinking my family would be better of if I was dead. So until you have gone through this please dont judge people on how they cope with being sick, because you might need the little things in life to keep you going and thats how Karen has come through this with laughter and life. And I hope I can come through this with as much dignity as she did. Thank You Tammy Hanney t_hanney@yahoo.com
Rating: Summary: I can relate... Review: As one of those rear people who also suffers from neurosarcoidosis, I found so much in this book that I can relate to...except for, sadly, the blind date with Richard Gere. If you are looking for a book to outline the clinical aspects and treatment of sarcoidosis, this is not the book for you. However, if your purpose is to find a book that will address the issues of living with any chronic illness with style, grace, and a lot of humor...this is a must read. I'm recommending Model Patient to my friends and famliy as a way of helping them understand how sarcoidosis has effected my life.
Rating: Summary: get humor and inspiration Review: Yes the book is full of humor and inspiration. Worth the time to read

Rating: Summary: Fun, Fun, FUN! Review: Karen Duffy has it all, good lucks, a loving husband, a great sense of humor, and a terrible disease. She takes everything life has to give her with a smile. Her view of life is refreshing. I got more out of this book than any self-help book I have ever read. And did I mention how hysterical she is? Everyone will laugh from Model Patient.
Rating: Summary: What A Waste of $() Review: First, let me say I am a fan of the MTV generation, but have never been fan of Karen Duffy's for various reasons (notably because she always appeared to be a poser). However, I purchased this book for a friend of mine who has an illness similar to what Karen is experiencing. I thought it would be helpful to her and decided to take a look at the book before handing it over, as I know little about the incurable disease. After reading the first 40 pages, I asked myself what is this trash? It certainly was nothing about the disease! It was Karen's dating history! Who really cares what genitalia tricks her freestyle ex-boyfriend mastered and what Dwight Yoakam bought her for Christmas?! What a lame attempt at book writing, not to mention it truly sounds like she had a very unfilling and unsatisfying life thus far! It really sounds like Karen was airing her dirty laundry to regain her 15 minutes of fame rather than concentrating on the sole focus of the book. Needless to say, I am not giving this book to my friend, as I am sure she would find it totally useless. In fact, I am hoping the bookstore allows me to return it! Recommendation: Don't waste the money. You would be better off taking the $() and burning it...unless, of course, you are interested to hear of Karen's lame and failed romantic history. Big yawn from me!
Rating: Summary: Get Model Patient! Review: Forget the categories--this book is a biography, humor book, inspirational, you name it! If you only buy one book this year (yeah right) buy Model Patient! I have a friend with sarcoidosis and I was considering buying it for her, but I read it myself first to see if she would like it. Needless to say I immediately got her a copy when I was finished. Don't walk, run! to get Model Patient.
Rating: Summary: I resisted, but... Review: This is not the kind of book I would normally read--I'm into poetry, science fiction, goth-horror, some nonfiction scientific books. But I have a friend who reads a lot of books about illness (she even went to the reading Duff gave in San Francisco.) She bugged me about it until I agreed that she could loan me the book. I started to read it, and enjoy it, and when I finished I decided I would listen to my friend's recommendations more often. Truly a funny and moving books, and a good helping of macarbe humor that I really enjoyed. After I read it I checked the reviews on Amazon, and no surprise, most of the other people didn't seem to share my taste in literature, but obviously a lot of people responded to the book, maybe not because of the same reasons I did. I'm glad this one seems to be popular. I can't say too much about Tuesdays with Morrie because I've never read it, but I don't think I would enjoy that nearly as much as Model Patient. As for the people who didn't seem to like it, I think they must not have gotten very far into the book. There is a lot of celebrity stuff in the beginning that was funny but wasn't necesarily my thing. But when you get to the end you realize that without understanding where she was coming from, you can't understand where she wound up. I urge them to take another crack at it!
