Rating: Summary: Big Fat Idiot? You mean is Al Franken a Big Fat SNL Has Been? Review: What can an intelligent human being say about a Saturday Night Jive Actor who plays...oops! make that playED a sad, imbalanced, manic, she male type character who epitomizes the touchy-feely ex-hippie left wing in America, except: was he playing HIMSELF? One only need look at his Non-Lorne Michaels Filmography or the lack thereof to see what this poor actor is. imdb.com/name/nm0291253/ . His best acting, most fitting part, and likely the Career Path his Guidance Counselor recommended, was as a Baggage (and Ape) Handler in "Trading Places". Of course Al Franken as "Paul Flum" in the BOMB "One More Saturday Night" must have been the true peak New York native's career. His career speaks Volumes for himself. As far as the "Big FAT" goes, don't look at the sales ranking which includes friends, family, and the publisher's own weekly purchases, look at how many "Fat" books are for sale USED, and how many are LEFT at your local Warehouse Membership store.
Rating: Summary: And they want to give this man a radio show? Review: Yes, I am a conservative. But I will read both sides. I finally read Mr. Franken's book. Well, he's probably likeable in person, and a devoted father..he never was THAT funny on SNL. No wonder liberals are losing the battle. Rush is entertainment, he's not a philosophical leader. Read National Review for that. But Franken makes almost no points beyond Rush is fat, and conservative public figures have not always lived saintly lives, and not everyone who believes in strong defense is a veteran. Most of the book seems to me to be filler. There is a long bit about an imaginary Vietnam mission where conservative figures act cowardly and dishonorably. Except, strangely, Oliver North. Does Franken LIKE Oliver North? Or is it that unlike all the writers and political figures that Franken attempts to pick physical confrontations with, Franken was afraid Col. North would actually pound him. :) Oh, sorry, I'm descending to Franken's insult level. I guess that what bothered me is that even in all the books by radio talk show hosts, not to mention those by actual conservative pundits, there is an attempt to use history, facts and figures to make the conservative points. Franken uses a tiny bit of factual information (a couple bar charts) but otherwise sticks to personal appearance and lifestyle insults and made up fantasy stories. Is this the best that liberals can do? The best zingers in the book are ones that Franken writes against Democrats. I guess that is what you are reduced to when failure is your historical legacy, and all your ideas have been proven wrong by events. And doggone it, Al, it's just not that funny.
Rating: Summary: Reverse title and you get an idea Review: The title should really be "Some observations, one of which is that Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot". I listened to Mort Salh on the radio a couple of weeks ago, where he complained that today's political satirists aren't up to par. Just by insulting someone they're not making a point. "Easier said than done" is a good way to summarize Mort's view. It is far more difficult to prove to your audience that a certain political figure may be an idiot than to just simply call him or her a name. I couldn't help thinking about that when I started to read this book. Al Franken is a very entertaining writer, and much of what he says I believe, but I think he sometimes takes an almost patronizing approach with his readers. For example, on Chapter 22 (The Reagan Years: Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Liar) he shows some tables. These tables have data that show how Reagan's economic policies favored the rich, not the poor, which is exactly the opposite than what Rush had claimed. To further underline the fact that Rush had lied, Al writes in hand script, over the table, "What a d***!". Why does he have to do that? Are his readers so thick that they cannot figure that out by themselves? I felt this slightly patronizing. Yes, Rush is a whale, but can we please stop focusing on his looks? That doesn't make him eviler. Also, i couldn't help but get a little tired of Al tooting his own horn. Yes, we know you have a great quarterback arm, and you are sooooo funny! Stop writing about it, please! Although the arguments in this book are not as compelling as the ones in "Lies and the Lying Liars..." (which by the way is a much better book), this is still worth a read.
Rating: Summary: Why is everything so one-sided??? Review: Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations by Al Franken is completely one-sided and cruel. Franken destroys Limbaugh with no regrets. He makes a chart of how fat Limbaugh has been over the years, and makes Rush's marriages seem like they meant nothing to him. Sure, he does make good points about Rush twisting the truth to his advantage (like when he said that "there is no conclusive proof that nicotine's addictive"), but I think he goes overboard. However, I did enjoy this book. There were many more subjects in this book than just Rush Limbaugh. Al Franken talked about Bob Dole, the Budget Crisis, Phil Gramm, and Newt Gingrich. Speaking of Gingrich, Franken has a few funny things to say about him. You have to read the chapter entitled "Gingrich: Sex, Giraffes, and Weightlessness". Franken makes every subject he approaches have a funny side to it. The way he writes it makes you laugh out loud and want to continue reading, and I will definitely read more books by Al Franken in the future. His idea of putting elderly into space is great; you should read that part too. Franken makes you think about so many different subjects in politics, and tells great stories of adventures that he has had in politics throughout his life, but they always have a humorous side to them. Overall, I really liked the book, and Al Franken got all his points across really well. He opened my mind to politics, and I'm going to start reading a different varity of books now.
Rating: Summary: Something for the sequel... Review: Hopefully, Franken (or at least FAIR) will write a sequel about Rush. If either of them do, they can include this little white lie from Rush. I caught this a while back on my last blog, and I unfortunately couldn't get the word out much about it. On July 3, 2003, Rush Limbaugh pretended to mathematically prove that liberals are unpatriotic when he went on this vein: "...A new Gallup poll out for the Independence Day weekend, showed that 7 in 10 Americans are "extremely proud" to be Americans. If you go inside this poll, however, you find these astounding numbers: Eighty percent of conservatives are extremely proud of the country, compared with 68% of moderates and 56% of liberals. More than 8 in 10 Republicans are extremely proud to be Americans, while two-thirds of Democrats feel this way. Only 56% of liberals are proud of this country, folks. Meanwhile conservatives and Republicans are overwhelmingly proud. What does this tell you, my friends?" It tells us that either: A) Limbaugh is lying B) Limbaugh is an ignoramus can't perform the simple task of interpreting a poll C) Both (The most likely choice) Why do I say this? Because when you look at the actual poll, you find that 56% said they were "extremely proud" to be Americans, not "proud". "Extremely proud" was one of several choices: Extremely proud, very proud, moderately proud, only a little proud, not at all, & no opinion. While 56% of liberals said "extremely proud" almost all of the rest said that they were very or moderately proud. All in all, 1% of all respondents said, "not proud at all", meaning that if they were all liberal, only 3% of liberals aren't proud to be Americans. Of course, "Only 97% of liberals are proud of this country, folks" doesn't have quite the same ring to it, so Limbaugh decided to BS about it, something not at all out of character for Rush.
Rating: Summary: "Welcome to the EIB Net.......Wait, where's my pills?" Review: Ahh, the beauty of karma. A lovely, poignent book about a fat, fake, junkie. Buy it.
Rating: Summary: I'll stick with Rush, thank you Review: Let's get one thing straight, Rush Limbaugh has more integrity in his little pinky than this "man" has in his entire body. If you're someone on the left and you actually want to enlighten yourself, buy Democratic Senator Zell Miller's new book A National Party No More. He's trying to save your butts so you can actually be taken seriously. And if you're too partisan to hear what a conservative Democrat has to say, try Red White And Liberal by Alan Colmes. At least he lays out the liberal agenda without attacking people. Or maybe you don't care about nice liberals, just the mentally unstable nuts who make money by calling people names in the title of their books. No matter what faults conservatives may have, having a lepracaun face liar like Franken calling them on it is just the pot calling the kettle black. Maybe Rush ought to write a book called Al Franken Is A Buck Tooth Nerd.
Rating: Summary: Big Fat Idiot tries to beat prison time! Review: Nothing like hypocrisy and Al Franken did a good job of debunking the lies and distortions of a lonely creep who got his rocks off all alone in a broadcast studio. His fantasy world. The book is thorough and prescient. Now we know why the fat idiot liked the dark studio bloviating into the ether. He was addled by enough drugs to destroy his hearing and have a criminal investigation launched. It's easy for him to blame the Democrats ... as Franken notes. But in this case, an assortment of judges are saying there's probable cause to belive Mr. Limbaugh committed a crime. In Florida, if it's prosecuted fairly and in line with previous cases with non-celebrities - who couldn't afford big buck lawyers, Rush is looking at a mandatory 3 years in the slammer, perhaps more depending on how many pills actually turned up in the records. One sheet of one pharmacy would have most people already in jail without bail. Nearly a half-million dollars in walking around cash money in convenient $9900 bundles -- in five months. Maybe Jeb Bush can pull off another miracle and suddenly find Limbaugh innocent and give him a pardon or put political pressure on people to drop the case. As it is, unless someone political pulls some strings, Rush and some doctors are likely to be headed up the River. So long, fat boy. I think it's a rotten way to treat drug addicts like you -- but it's what you and your buddies wanted. The big leaks, incidentally in the case, come from Rush himself, who has admitted to committing a crime in his broadcasts. What a fake. Way to go Al!
Rating: Summary: Franken Fails Again Review: Al Franken fails again with his senseless diatribe entitled "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot." Stinging satire is wonderful, cheap satire is...well, cheap; and that's exactly what the reader gets in this book. Franken shows no creativity, no substantive thought and no fresh angle in the war on conservatism and conservatives. Instead we're treated to one flimsy piece of political "comedy" after another. Pugh! Put it away, folks; better yet, leave it on the bookstore shelf.
