Rating: Summary: Why he named the book "BIG FAT IDIOT" Review: I have two things to say...1) I keep seeing people taking offense to the title of the book so I wanted to clear that up. The REASON that he named the book RUSH LIMBAUGH IS A BIG FAT IDIOT is not just because he is, it's because Rush is ALWAYS making comments like that about his targets. Al has said that Rush, on his radio show, makes personal attacks on the way others look, how intelligent they are and so on, all the time. He calls people STUPID all the time (I've listened to his show). Al has said that what inspired him to name his book the way he did was when Rush held up a picture of Chelsea Clinton and called her the White House dog. She was 13 years old! Al was disgusted with Rush and so named his book the way that he did. Clearly most of you are not that bright and are unable to understand the humor in the title of the book. He was just giving Rush a taste of his own venomous medicine. 2) This is a great book!
Rating: Summary: Who's the idiot? Review: How about this: Al Frankin is a big fat idiot! You lefties claim to be victims of hate from the Right, but loook at this book's title. Is Frankin so stupid that he can only conjure words like "big," "fat," and "idoit." He could've said, "...is an enormously rotund fool." But Al, not Rush, is the idiot. I suggest to all you people going ga-ga over this bound scrap paper should try thinking with a standard human intellect.
Rating: Summary: Remembrance of Past Zings Review: I can remember, like it was yesterday, when I first layed eyes on this screed. First, I did not know what a screed was until I read UN Ambassador Jean Kirkpatrick's scathing review of Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot (RLBFI)that Al so graciously put in his foreward. How many folks would let a pundit from the hostile camp have that powerful a forum to shape opinion of the book? I think it is a credit to Al's fair and balanced nature that he let her. Anyone offended by the book's title should remember that Rush made his career out of insults. That is the great irony. Look, I have two of my degrees at public institutions, and tubby (Rush) reminds his audience that we, public college graduates, can not grasp the sublime arguments of Milton Freidman and the other apostles of Free Market ideology. Comments like"you public school and public college graduates probably cannot grasp this" "you know, my friends, the sorry state of thinking by people who went to our public institutions is tragic." NUT JOB! YOU ARE A COMMUNITY COLLEGE DROPOUT! By your own definition you are an idiot, and Al is right. An aside, I would like to see Al take Rush and Bill O'Reilly on in a game of celebrity Jeopardy. Al would pummel them because he knows questions to answers other than "My housekeeper." Answer in the form of a question is of course: "Who supplies my drugs illegally?" or category Awards answer: "The Peabody;" answer in the form of a question: "What award did I say I won but really lied about and then made a complete ass of myself by trying to cover it up." Rush and Bill would get those; but not much else. Although I must disclaim that Bill has two masters degrees and is much smarter than Rush, a damnation by the feintest of all praises I suppose. Conservatives do not know the daily sting of insults that Rush lays on us liberals. He does not best our arguments because he really has none accept weak analogies or his bloviations and prevarications. Mark Twain said that "a lie runs half way around the world before the truth even gets on its shoes." Al was like our knight in shining armor back in '95. I could never get through to Limbaugh, his jackass callscreener stopped me. But in his book Al redressed the greivance, in part anyway. He reminds that Rush is either a liar or an idiot. Al shows how Rush tried to twist numbers on a chart displaying the effects of the Reagan tax cuts. Al shows the reader how Rush cooked the books to show that Reagans tax cuts helped the poor more than the wealthy. It is either disingenous or stupid. It is also possible that he recieved some training in accountancy at Arthur Anderson. Was Al being prophetic? Limbaugh's past questionable history is brought to light. Rush was pretty lazy, depending on public handouts. He was, as I said, a JC dropout. Given the recent facts of his life, it can be truly said that Rush is a drug addicted drop out on the public dole. Anyway, he avoided service in Vietnam. Somewhere in the mid eighties he recieved his conservative epiphany in Sacramento, California. Like the 49ers before him he found gold out there. There was a gold mine to be had in right wing talk radio, in tickling the ears of people that wanted their prejudices confirmed and elevated. Al exposes lists of lies that Rush tells about the environment, his asundry dissemblings on his show, in his books and on his TV show. He exposed that Limbaugh won't go on TV or be interviewed with another pundit or politico unless it is some handpicked prescreened dittohead. Rush NEVER goes up against anyone who can challenge him. He goes on Russert alone. He seldom has guests on his talk show. He will only let "a few" scared and inarticulate callers who disagree with him talk on his show--strawmen he can easily knock down. Rush is not likely to be appearing opposite Al Franken in a public debate any time soon. He does not stop with Rush. There are the "other observations." Particularly interesting is his examination of Mr.Newt--Newt Gingrich. Newt is a real jerk with the woman in his life--making Clinton look saintly. There is the story about his cancer stricken wife that will cause all to think Newt vile. But what interested me most was a comment that Gingrich made about oral sex and why he insisted on having only oral sex with aides and lady freinds other than the current Mrs. Gingrich, whoever that was at the time. He needed plausable deniablity. If he was ever asked if he had sex with a woman, he could say "no" and not be lying because oral sex was not sexual intercourse. This is in 1994,long before Monica and the stained dress. Pretty prophetic heh!
Rating: Summary: I'm a 100% liberal with a common sense though... Review: But I think Franken is as much of an "idiot" as Limbaugh. He has good points, but personal attacks (especially on a cover of a book) are very tasteless and make me question Franken's motives.
Rating: Summary: Actually 4 stars, but i gotta balance out all the Dittoheads Review: I find it extremely amusing that so many dittoheads are sing this page as a political forum while completely ignoring the fact that IT WAS MEANT TO BE FUNNY. Nobody tell Evelyn Waugh about this.
Rating: Summary: Can't wait for the second edition Review: A facinating look at Rush and how he has fed the fires of the far right with his own twisted slant on what is happening in the world of politics. Franken illustrates the fabricated Rushian-statistics, as well as discussing little gems such as Rush having been on welfare. Supposedly the second edition is going to have a new subtitle...it will be called: Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot: You Can Put That in Your OxyCotin Pipe and Smoke It!
Rating: Summary: Great idea, mediocre execution Review: I wanted to laugh harder, but, I just don't think that this book was particularly well-written. Al Franken must have read Woody Allen's books. Franken tries to write like Allen, but, misses. The content, however, the facts and ideas behind the observations, are priceless. I have to laugh at the "reviewers' who hadn't even read the book- and admitted it. DIDIOTS! I have to laugh at the "reviewers" who pity poor Rush and his addiction. They condemn Franken for making fun of a poor addict. THE BOOK WAS WRITTEN IN THE MID 1990s! Learn to read! YOU DIDIOTS!! What scares me is that these people vote. What scares me more is that they vote for people like Bush. What scares me is that they reproduce. I give the book 5 stars for ideas, 1 or 2 stars for writing.
Rating: Summary: entertaining political book Review: I have read three books by Al Franken. This was the funniest. The book is not just about Rush. He writes about many different people. He even drifts away from politics occasionally with anecdotes about his family and his past. He does talk about some of Limbaughs lies and gives examples of Limbaughs hypocrisy. Apparently the reviewer named Jerry from Canada agrees with Rush Limbaugh's statements that there is no conclusive proof that nicotine is addictive or that cigarettes cause cancer, and also agrees with Limbaugh that there are more American Indians now than when the white settlers came.
Rating: Summary: Rush Limbaugh actually proved it Review: I read this book just before reading about Limbaugh's prescription drug dramedy. Maybe now Rush will be giving away signed copies of Al Franken's book. It would be a shame if the world's future right-wing hypocrites were robbed of the example of Limbaugh,Newt Gringrich, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and the king of them all, George Wishy-washy Bush.
Rating: Summary: And he is supposed to have a sense of humor...... Review: This was my first Franken book and I was very disappointed.Writing humor about politics and idiologies should be easy and many have done it.Franken just spouts a left wing diatrabe of anti Christian,Family and Moral agendas;and anyone who doesn't agree with him is an idiot. Not once does he attack Limbaughs ideas, disprove their validity and offer an alternative.I guess he is so full of hatred he hasn't any room left for objective thought. If you're looking for a book that takes the ideas that Limbaugh stands for and exposes them and offers good arguments against them, look elsewhere, you won't find much here.
