Rating: Summary: OUR DUMB CENTURY DOESN'T SUCK (MUCH)! Review: This is a very smart, very funny cultural satire. Buy it...you'll like it.
Rating: Summary: Hysterical Review: Our Dumb Century is one of the funniest books I've ever read. It is clever, literate, and highly politicized. The writers savage everyone in every group, but are especially brutal when the subject is wealthy, elite, white, or male -- and given the history of the United States, that's fair enough, isn't it? One can choose to be offended by this material, if one believes that serious subjects must only be addressed *very seriously.* Our Dumb Century has a point of view, and makes its points emphatically and fearlessly, often in ways that are blunt or crude as well as funny. Humor is one way to make an argument, and if you don't think so, or can't understand that, then you should skip this book and go read Dostoevsky or something.
Rating: Summary: Not funny Review: Beware the dolts and louts who find such "humor" funny. Too bad, too. I was really ready for a good laugh.
Rating: Summary: Just plain stupid Review: This stuff is really juvenile. Not necessarily because it's rude or offensive (although it is that, too), but just plain dumb. Damn smug about it to boot. I probably would have thought this was the greatest book in the world if I'd read it in high school.
Rating: Summary: "The Onion" Sets New Standards For Historical Accuracy Review: The bar has been raised recently with the release of "Our Dumb Century", a retrospective look at the news stories behind humankind's finest hundred years. The subtle and poignant thesis of the work is carefully crafted in the first few sentences. The rest of the book builds relentlessly upon its complex premise in a meandering and sometimes methodical way. "At first, we weren't sure which century we should write about. The 11th century was obviously quite dumb. The 17th began fairly bright, but a couple of incredibly stupid decades at the end put it high on our list" commented one of the authors. " In the end, we felt the 20th century was most appropriate because we've personally been able to contribute." Obviously, much of the time in creating such a work is in the many hours of tireless research that are required to assemble such a collection of news stories. However, purchasers of the book are rewarding the authors as literally hundreds of copies have already been sold. "The L.L.Bean Spring and Summer Catalogue no longer holds the 'place of honor' in my bathroom's magazine rack!" exclaimed one recent reader. "That story about World War Two and stuff; it was pretty cool." raved another purchaser. If you are going to purchase several books this year, or are getting some deep discounts for ordering a bunch of books at once, then make sure that "Our Dumb Century" is one of them! --------- Really, a great book! As hilarious and biting as the online publication. Thanks!
Rating: Summary: This Chinaman Loved it Review: While readers with sticks up their collective anal fissures (*ahem* reader from Cambridge, Massachusetts, April 14, 1999 *ahem*) may find the bawdy, rude and hilarious headlines "offensive," the rest of us can see it for what it is. Wacky, brash, and written by obviously VERY well-read authors (some of the more obscure references forced me to dredge through memories from my old AP US History) -Our Dumb Century is a treasure. Buy it! (Especially if you are a White Establishment Male, who, I can assure you is Never Mocked in the entire book).
Rating: Summary: An entertaining book. But there's better . . . Review: A fun read, especially in small doses. However, this book comes in at a distant second when compared to the ultimate newspaper parody, The National Lampoon Sunday Newspaper Parody. Sadly, this high point in American humor is out of print, as is its companion, The National Lampoon 1963 High School Yearbook. If you ever see either of these, don't hesitate, BUY!
Rating: Summary: It is the best! Review: This book does not let up in its irrevrent take on the last 100 years and provides a refreshing take on the average nostalgia books that have grown so tiresome lately. The tradition of the Onion news-paper lives on in this book. I recomend this whole-heartedly as one of the funniest books I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: Humor? There is nothing funny about this offensive offering. Review: This book was supposed to be an ironic twist on the century's events. The book is not funny. It offends african-americans, native americans, the handicapped, chinamen, Latinos, women, retarded children, and anyone else who is not the establishment white male. There is nothing funny about the shootings at Kent State, the divisive nature of the OJ Simpson trial, or our shameful president. The book attempts to be witty by skewering historical events, but by doing so in an utterly offensive way, there is no wit or charm, just plain attempts at insulting. This is not what america needs as she enters her fourth millenia.
Rating: Summary: Not very funny. Review: It wasn't funny at all. What's so funny about history? That's the problem with America today, people read a good history book and laugh at it. History is serious business, pal. You think it's funny, then you try writing a history book. Use this book in the way it was intended to be used, as reference material.
