Summary: This Dumb Century
Review: This book turned out to be nothing that I anticipated. It's not funny and it was a complete waste of my money. Phony headlines used as a poor attempt at humor. Save your money for better material.

Summary: The funniest book I have ever read
Review: Good satire/comedy is a difficult task. It is not enough to just have a good idea or opening line, and then let that try to carry the day. Our Dumb Century succeeds where many have failed: the satires are hilarious from beginning to end. Great satirists know how to work with a kernel of truth and give it hilarious angles and take it to absurd places. The authors know their history and have a knack for latching onto some of the mainstream values and prejudices of each era, exaggerating them, and incorporating them in the headlines and stories. For example, a typical 50's headline reads "Eisenhower Vows to Address Growing Problem of Overdue Library Books," or the small print lead from the 1907 satire, "Foreign child labor a 'great threat' to American child labor, say captains of industry." There are no sacred cows here. All political viewpoints are skewered. Check out the Russian revolution headline: "Pretentious, Goateed Coffeehouse Types Seize Power In Russia." How many humor books have left you laughing until tears roll down your face? This is that rare book!

Summary: Funniest book I have EVER found!
Review: Funny yet darkly sarcastic. This book is not for the timid at heart but if you have been looking for something twisted and highly humorous pull out that credit card immediately. So darn funny we bought 5 of them as Christmas presents to our friends and relatives.

Issues for some readers: Some language; mild and some not so mild. Deeply sarcastic toward the subject. VERY DARK HUMOR!

Positives: Funniest thing out there!

Summary: Great satire...
Review: Definitely an amusing read if you're in tune to the goings on of the past 100 years. If not, well, many of the references may be over your head. The "front page" newspaper format can be more difficult to read than a standard novel and the book certainly lends itself to flipping around interesting headlines. Still, a lighthearted book and a nice gift for your history buff friends.

Summary: The Funniest Book I have ever read
Review: In the fine tradition of The Onion, Our Dumb Century satirizes news from the past century. No stone is left unturned as Scott Dikkers and the editors of The Onion parody 100 years of news. Dikkers and crew have a piercing view of the zeitgeist of our era.

Summary: Highly Amusing for a Light Chuckle
Review: 'The Onion' has brought together its own special blend of humour in this book -- and if you're a fan of that comic styling (and admittedly, not everyone is), you'll find yourself rolling from this one.

Keeping with 'The Onion's tradition of blatantly mocking all aspects of modern culture, "Our Dumb Century" is a special treat in that it presents a 'historical work'; a look back at all the 'headlines' from the past 100 years. Fans will love the jabs at 1908 maladies and 1920's anxieties.

The humour is of its own brand, but if that brand is yours (i.e., you've read the Onion before, and enjoyed it), then this is a book you'll love.

Summary: Absolutely Brilliant!
Review: As a regular reader of the Onion weekly newspaper, this book even surpasses the excellent weekly newspaper publication. Funny, brilliant, intelligent.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great fun for the historiclly literate
Review: What makes the Onion so great, both as a satirical newspaper and in this book, is that they are tremendously well-versed in the historical and current events that they skewer so wonderfully. To their credit, they assume that their readers are, too.

Contemporary readers will chuckle at headlines such as 'Clinton Feels Nation's Pain, Breasts,' but the history buff will revel in satirical stories poking fun at many early-century figures and institutions that less adventurous satirists would have left alone. I can't think of many writers aside from the Onion who would have tried to get laughs out of a story about how racy the Sears catalog lingerie section has become.
