Rating: Summary: buy this book now! Review: Amazingly clever and funny stuff. I couldn't stop laughing
Rating: Summary: Dumb it is. Review: No doubt about it, this is dumb. I don't mean the century, I mean the Onion. It simply is NOT FUNNY nor is it any fun.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: What the Onion is able to do in this book is amazing. To be able to fill that many pages with hilariously funny material, and make it all histrically based is something that i wonder over. Purchasing this book was probably the smartest thing I've done all year (except for my decision not to become a professional book reviewer). Not only have I been entertained for hours on end, but my friends and I have laughed for hours straight while reading and re-reading some of the articles. While there are a few articles that are in poor taste, the vast majority consists of genuinely clever (and funny as hell) humor. I'd recommend this book to anybody who has an IQ over 75.
Rating: Summary: "I have a bomb shelter and you can't use it" Review: Since discovering the Onion, I've been hooked on every printed word they produce. While the on-line edition hasn't held me in rapture as of late, this collection more than makes up for that. More zietgiest than a Douglas Coupland novel and riddled with the the kind of observations that leave you speachless with laughter; headlines spare no-one and sacred cows are roasted right. A recent trip to London proved the ability of the Onion to translate across the waters as my British friends and I traded headlines back and forth. No home is complete without it. "Ladies and gentlemen of the press, this year I pity a great many fools."
Rating: Summary: Funny beyond belief Review: _Our Dumb Century_ had me rolling-on-the-floor, gasping-for-air, ecstatic with laughter. This is the funniest book I've read for years. The headlines are clever, clever, clever. What separates this great humour book from a lesser one is that the faux news stories themselves--the text under the headlines--is just as funny as the initial joke. These people are trenchant comics and masters of deadpan parody. Buy this book if you want to remember history with verve and humour. _ODC_ ranks with _Dave Barry Slept Here_ as one of the funniest bits of American history (so to speak) ever produced.
Rating: Summary: Okay, I'll join the 5-stars Review: Everyone else has done a thorough job of reviewing this, but I had to jump in. I really treasure this book. I don't consider it political satire, but just satire in general, due to the fact that you don't need an understanding of politics in order to get the jokes. What's amazing is that the authors of these pieces have a honest understanding of the prevailing attitudes of the years covered, all the way back to the beginning of this century! They did their homework, and the result is hilarious.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Reading! Review: This is an enourmously funny book, filled with the kind of satire that our nation needs right now in atime when media hype seems to focus on rage and tragedy. After reading this, you'll wonder how the morons that ran our country ever got out of kindergarten.
Rating: Summary: uhhhh, Review: you're all missing the point. The Onion is amazing; funny, smart, the whole nine yards. But brilliant political satire? spare me. The Onion, and Our Dumb Century in particular, pokes fun at things like homophobia, racism, and sexism, by BEING homophobic, racist, and sexist. OK, it's the best thing out there, but genius? I disagree.
Rating: Summary: Funny as Hell Review: The Onion tends to offend people who take themselves, the world, or The Onion itself too seriously. This book is sarcastic, satiric, and funny as hell. If you liked this, you should also check out 'The Boomer Bible' by R.F. Laird.
Rating: Summary: Atrocious Review: This is so aweful, I don't know how to tell you. My grandson has it and I read it, and its not funny at all. But oi, I'm older now and I think this is what the kids like, who am I to say otherwise, right? Then this thing starts making fun of the Holocaust. Not once, but on four occasions. Ai gefelt! Who are these peoples? What right do they have? In the name of comedy, or what? I was so verklemt, I couldn't even show my wife when she asks what I'm so mashugenah about. This thing goes on and makes fun of the schwarzes in Vietnam, and it doesn't stop. I couldn't use the word "offensive" because it is too watered down. Some chutzbah these genutzens have, some chutzpah. I couldn't finish my sandwich, and it was a beautiful reuben. Oi, I hope that people don't find this thing funny. It's aweful. Its books like this that should burned, not Irving Berlin's beautiful poetry. Kids today shoot people and they steal and its because entertainment like this is here to feed their hatred. Where are the Garbo brothers when you need them? Sure, my Opa never approved, but they'd be better than this mistveh. This book hurt my feelings, and that's the bottom line.
