Summary: The funniest book I've ever read!
Review: This was truly the funnniest book I have ever read. My favorite headline was the screaming expletives detailing the moonwalk. While this book will probably be scorned by some, and offend others, it is hilarious, as long as the reader does not have a misconceptions of what men like JFK and FDR were truly like.

Summary: Liberal propaganda!
Review: These people are using humor to further their liberal agenda. They poke fun at Nixon and Reagan, yet Dukakis gets only one article. Where's the balance? They make Nixon out to be a criminal, Ike seem distracted and lazy, and Reagan somehow dishonest. Carter is praised for being a hip streaker. It just goes to show that the writers of this book have a hidden sinister agenda. This book should be burned! I don't even know why they call themselves "The Onion". What is funny about an onion? Making fun of the homeless, like Rush does, is much more productive than reading this trash.

Summary: VERY Funny book, if you like satire
Review: This is literally one of the funniest books I've ever read, and I've read a lot of books. This is what newspapers would look like in a world where political correctness is not as important as it is in ours. This book is not for everyone....

Only people with a sense of humor.

Summary: Foreigners beware!
Review: If you didn't grow up in the USA, You won't get the gist of most of it. I always prided myself on my knowledge of American history, but most of the contents of this book passed me by and what I did recognize was not nearly as witty as the descrition of this book made me believe. GD

Summary: Nixon on a Rampage!
Review: This was a great find, and has kept me amused and entertained for hours on end.

The ONION does an amazing job of capturing the best and worst of our history (okay, mostly the worst) and parroting it back to us in a creatively twisted fashion.

Whether it's Nixon on a crazed rampage, Clinton groping the nation, or the millenium report on who's being hit by catastrophic meteors and where, this book is a piece of sheer satiric brilliance.

Summary: A Laugh-Out-Loud Look at the Last Century
Review: For those of us who live in Wisconsin, one of the few bennies is close proximity to ground zero for the Onion, one of the strangest (not to mention funniest) free publications anywhere.

If you haven't been clued in to what the Onion does, it is a dead-on, straightfaced parody of American newspapers. It is beautifully crude and sophomoric in a manner Mad magazine no longer aspires to, and for readers looking for some deathly funny satire in this politically-correct, can't-we-all-just-get-along, sissified age, it is a lighthouse in a stormy sea.

So what's Our Dumb Century about? It is a parody of those fin-de-siecle commemoratives most major newspapers put out last year, ignorant of the fact that we still have a year left in the 20th century.

The book allegedly reprints the front pages of the last 100 years of the Onion during critical times in the nation's history. The writers accurately ape the style of newspapers throughout this period, from the cluttered text columns of the early 1900s to the graphic-intensive layouts of today.

Of course it's the stories themselves that hit you where you live. 1902-"Republics Negroes Still Waiting for 40 Acres, Mule--Agriculture Secretary Faults Low Mule, Acreage Availability at Present." 1918-"Corpse-Eating Rats Now Largest Military Force in Europe." 1934-"FDR Creates 300,000 Jobs With 'Tunnel to New Zealand' Project." 1945-"Hitler Commits Suicide; Ravaging of Europe a 'Desperate Cry for Help', Say Therapists." Or my favorite from 1963-"Kennedy Slain by CIA, Mafia, Castro, LBJ, Teamsters, Freemasons--President Shot 129 Times from 43 Different Angles." Oliver Stone was right!

If you're up for slaughtering some sacred cows with a smile and have more of a sense of humor than your typical Thought Police apparatchik, this may be the book for you.

Summary: ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
Review: I can't exactly remember when and where I heard of the onion, but it was almost half a year ago. I bought "Dumb Century" within a week of its release, and STILL go back for a quick read-through everynow and then! If your eyes are good, really pay close attention to all the small print, or 'codes'. For instance, in the upper right hand corner of the headline page of when Kennedy is slain, it says' Take a moment to remember where you are'. Or how about during the depression pages: 70,000 JOBS! (are needed very badly) and 2 MILLION DOLLARS IN FOOD RELIEF (would be a big help, too). I absolutely LOVE the onion! I check up on it every tuesday night/wednesday. I also plan on preordering their new book due to come out April 4th. The Onion is my literary hero.

Summary: Great!
Review: They should sell this book as a history and anthropology text - yes, I'm serious. It adds a great perspective to traditional ideas.

Summary: True to its format
Review: A while ago, I heard of theonion.com, I read a couple of their articles and I was simply overwhelmed with laughter, to the point of tears. There is no other word to describe this book but "genius". If you like political satire in any way, this is a sure buy. However, there is some offensive language and racist statements, however since no one is left sacred (except us Canadians) this makes it ok, it is indiscriment discrimination. It is a great book.

Summary: Too funny for your health
Review: I read this book, and at times I was debilitated because I was laughing so hard. I mean, I was laughing, then coughing, then doubled over on the floor wretching and gasping for breath. This isn't a good thing, almost needing hospitalization because of a book, but I have to say that it was worth it. "Our Dumb Century" is dangerously funny, but if you take precautions (a glass of water beside you, a reliable person nearby who can rush you to the emergency room) you'll be fine.

This stuff isn't for everybody, the language is a bit rough and the politics not always correct (thank God, too). But if you like humor that is at times completely over the top, at others subtle and witty, and at others ridiculously absurd, you'll love "Our Dumb Century". If you don't like funny stuff like this, well, buzz off.
