Rating: Summary: Relationship-Saving Discovery! Review: My heart sunk to my feet with guilt and disgust every time I completed my ritualistic viewing of pornographic material on the Internet while my extremely beautiful, faithful, loving wife would patiently wait for me to complete "my work" in the next room, never suspecting what I was up to. I lied to her an indefinite number of times in order to not only save myself, but to protect the lifestyle I was living. I always thought that I was in control, and that at any time I could stop. I soon discovered that this need to view explicit material controlled me, and not the other way around. When I had been caught for the last time and my wife threatened to leave, I finally sought help. The counselor I visited recommended this book, and it ended up being a life-changing experience. Every page of the book I read was like a snapshot of my life, detailing the loneliness I felt, the alienation and hurt I inflicted upon my wife, the damage I did to my relationship with her, the mixed signals and values I learned about sexuality from my parents at an early age, and the massive waste of time I spent on my addiction. The book even contains a section on Cybersex which takes a revealing look at how society is changing and being affected by this seemingly innocent passtime. If you are a person who suffers from this type of addiction or suspect you do, BUY THIS BOOK!!! For those of you who think you view online pornography without any consequences or without it having any influence on your life, BUY THIS BOOK!!! I am currently in the process of self-examining myself, trying desperately to save my marriage and regain my wife's trust, and reprioritizing my life. I owe a great deal of thanks to this book and to Dr. Patrick Carnes. THANK YOU, Dr. Carnes, for taking on a subject that no one wishes to discuss, and to help bring to light a type of addiction that society still finds difficult to accept as an illness instead of sheer perversion.
Rating: Summary: An Essential Resource Review: Out of the Shadows is an essential resource for anyone affected by this addiction. Mr. Carnes provides clear, concise, and straightforward information (unemcumbered by the typical overlay of medical jargon) on a subject that carries tremendous social stigma. This book can also help one obtain appropriate resources for this addiction.
Rating: Summary: Partners of Addicts can benefit from this book! Review: Sexual addiction has a profound impact on the partners and families of the addict. The road to recovery is a long hard journey as Dr. Carnes points out. For the partner of an addict, this book helps you understand that what you've been living with is NOT about you. You come to realize that this is a disease just as alcoholism is a disease. You learn what it's about, how it can progress if not treated and how recovery is a possibility. You also learn about co-addiction and the role you play in this insidious addiction. This book was a lifesaver for me and put me on the road to recovery from my own co-addiction.
Rating: Summary: Sex Addiction - Partytime? Review: Sexual addiction is treated in a sensitive and accurate manner in this premier book on the subject. This disease, always progressive if untreated, can ruin one's life if left untreated. This book points the way to control of the addiction
Rating: Summary: Does a Great Job of Explaining Sexual Addiction! Review: The author does a great job explaining, in plain English, what the addiction cycle is and how sexual addiction occurs. Having known NOTHING previously about addictions and especially sexual addiction, this book is an eye-opener. It is very comprehensive as to the different types and levels of sexual addiction. For any person who knows someone who has a sexual addiction, this book is a MUST for understanding exactly how serious this problem is. The only negative comment I would make is that I believe that there is not a co-addict for every addict--the author didn't say this but there is a lot of talk about the co-addict: in sexual addiction, there is usually (especially in the lower levels of addiction)few clues--IF ANY--to let a family member know that something wrong is going on. There is a lot of deceit that takes place in living two lives and so I believe many innocent people are just deceived about who the addict is until irrefutable evidence is found or the addict is caught red-handed. That small negative aside, the book is WONDERFUL and I definitely recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Out of the Shadows Review: The books was good, but lacked real depth. It is repetitive...beating the reader over the head with the same examples. I gave the book a thorough reading, but skimming it will suffice.
Rating: Summary: Understanding is helping. ... Review: This book casts a light on sexual addiction which is very opening to the addict, I felt absolutely educated and aware. ...
Rating: Summary: TRUE INSIGHT--AN INSIDER'S VIEW Review: THIS BOOK DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB OF REVEALING THE THOUGHTS OF SEX ADDICTS AND DESCRIBING THE STEPS OF THE ADDICTION. SPECIFICALLY, THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE WAYS AN ADDICT GETS CUT-OFF FROM REALITY AND THIS ENABLES THE ADDICTION TO PROGRESS OUT OF CONTROL. MANY BOOKS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ON SEXUAL ADDICTION. I WOULD CONSIDER THIS ONE OF THE BEST.
Rating: Summary: Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction Review: This book is a true insight into the illness of Sexual addiction. The book walks you through the underlying reasons for your sexual compulsion, and the subsequent understanding of how your acting out sexually is rooted in things well outside of sexual gratification. The book was surprisingly easy to read and understand. If you or a loved one may be suffering from this addiction, you may find the conclusive answers in this book just what you are looking for. I did.
Rating: Summary: Life Changing Review: This book put words to what I was feeling. It was like all of a sudden I was not alone and I was not crazy. Carnes writes from a perspective of understanding. He is not judging, he explaining where this all came from. He gives the reader hope that life can be different. He is a sex addict, he knows. I've done research on the topic and every author will site him. If you now a sex addict or think you might be one, this is the book for you.
