Rating: Summary: Down and dirty advice and action Review: I would combine this book with The Path by Laurie Beth Jones and Pathfinder by Nicholas Lore. PAthfinder may be a little too involved and imposing for some. This book by Sher has many of the same attributes. You will guided on a jorney to discocver what it is you really want to do with your life. Sher's writing is conversational and friendly. At time syou will feel as if she is in the room talking with you. Read the book, do the exercises, and get closer to doing what you really want to do.
Rating: Summary: Don't buy this book unless you want to change your life! Review: I bought this book in hardcover in 1995 and stopped reading after 2 chapters because I realized that if I kept reading I was going to have to change my life. I also realized I wasn't ready. If you approach this book conscientiously and use it as a tool, you truly can do anything you want with your life. That's a simultaneously scary and liberating thought. So, if you've just been "taking what they're giving 'cause you're working for a living," buy this book and get ready to be empowered.
Rating: Summary: Only moderately helpful Review: I read the book and did the determining excercises that were meant to tell me what I want in a career. Sher pegged my character and did an excellent job of listing some factors I should look for in a career field (chiefly, variety and shorter-term projects, with several things to work on at once). However, 'my' section of the book was regrettably short on concrete suggestions for where I might find those factors, or even where to start looking or what questions to ask. It is possible, though, my type is just hard to fit and that other personality types may find more concrete help here.
Rating: Summary: Yes, you CAN love the life you live. Review: If your life is unfulfilling and it's because you have a sense that there is some greater purpose for you, then this book is for you. The author takes you on a journey of self-discovery that will open doors (and push you through them) into the blissful world of authenticity. Stop living a life of SHOULD and live one of CAN.
Rating: Summary: Lifesaving! Review: This book was an inspiration. Not only did it direct me exactly to what I really wanted to do with my life, but showed me the steps to do it. Barbara should win a nobel prize for motivation & self-awareness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels lost when it comes to figuring out what they want to do when they grow up!
Rating: Summary: You really DO know what you want Review: Psychologist and career counselor, Barbara Sher, the best-selling author of WISHCRAFT, has synthesized a ground-breaking work of psychological insights and practical exercises that help us ferret out what we knew all along: we really do know what we want. There are many reasons for this sometimes lifelong memory gap. For some its fear of success, for others it's fear of failure, for many its insecurity or a lack of self-esteem. Whatever the reason, Sher has devised creative exercises from writing our own wish scenario to revisiting that point in our life where everything started to go wrong. The question to ask of any self-help book is: can it really help? Yes, definitely, if you approach Sher's book without any expectations. If you think it's going to make you get up and quit that job you dread going to day after day, forget it. Sher's work here is to adjust your thinking not your life - that's up to you. As stated in the Upanishads: "As one's thinking is, such one becomes. " After reading this book, you just might appreciate that "dreadful" job you have and see how it actually helps you get on with the work you really love to do. On the other hand, you might also find that the lifelong work you have been dreaming about can truly be a nightmare. It's all a matter of perspective as Sher points out so effectively. I would recommend this book to anyone who felt it was time for a change and a little introspection. Whether you are highly creative or down-to-earth and practical, everyone can learn a lesson or two from Sher's revealing insights.
Rating: Summary: I've changed careers because of this little book. Review: I didn't even have to finish reading the book. I couldn't believe these authors had such insight to what I needed to change my life around. I have accomplished so much in changing my career path and I am now making a career for myself that I truly enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Never Read Self-Help. . .Before This Review: I had tried to read self-help before and couldn't. Barbara Sher presents a procedure that makes you feel that you can "do" your destiny--whatever it is. This book helped me get out of a career path that was stifling me and forced me to realize what I really wanted AND GO FOR IT. I've read this book twice already!
Rating: Summary: If you're a bundle of neuroses, this is the book for you! Review: For me, these tapes were not very helpful. I was hoping to find help discovering what I really want to do. Instead I found more about shedding the anger I am supposed to feel about my parents unspoken expectations. The one thing I did learn from these tapes is that I am not afraid to move forward with my life and most of the things Ms. Sher focuses on are simply not issues for me. There is value in that, but what I really need are exercises to help me change my career path. This has led me to another book called "The Pathfinder" by Nicholas Lore.
Rating: Summary: Read it - it will change your life!! Review: I felt as if I was reading about my life when Barbara wrote some of the examples in her book. I've never understood my gifts and abilities. I love the fact that Barbara doesn't try to mess with your mind while dealing with your heart. I've started taking baby steps towards things I've always talked myself out of before, and even things that I didn't know I had any interest in. I've even learned to appreciate my "boring" job for what it allows me to do. Well done Barbara for reaching out and touching people - right where they are at!!
