Summary: Gentle, supportive book for anyone who has experienced loss.
Review: I am a psychologist working in a college counseling center, and I frequently recommend this book to my clients. It provides support for anyone who is experiencing grief related to a loss, including the death of a loved one and the breakup of a relationship. The best thing about this book is its unique, easy-to-read format: the chapters are written in outline form, and each chapter is just 1-2 pages long and printed on the left-hand sides of the pages only. The right-hand side pages contain poems, quotes, and sayings offering comfort as well as inspiration. This book will help you to feel that you are not along as you begin to cope with your loss.

Summary: Wonderful, easy to read guide through tough times
Review: This book is a very easy to read guide which helps get you through the loss of a loved one, whether that loss is due to death or a break up. It starts from day one - "what happened?!??!" - and takes you to the end stage - moving on to the next love. It provides basic, common sense advice (we all know that in these times we sometimes lack that common sense!), poems, stories, and basic companionship. It acts as a friend, a guide, a helpful companion. You can sit down, read the portion applicable to you at that time, and then come back to the rest later. For example, if you are at the grieving stage, read that section, digest its advice, absorb the poems, and then, when you are ready, read on - to the next stage. The guide is constructed to lead you through the stages of grieving and moving on. Reading ahead can be helpful - so you know where you are heading - as is reading back, so that you can see how far you've come! And, if you aren't normally a poetry fan, don't worry! These are poems which are easy to read, funny, deep, and non-threatening, all at the same time. Get this book - you won't regret it!

Summary: Absolutely unique and priceless
Review: This book is not a "chapter" book, but is a collection of thoughts on loss, the pain, the healing. The person who is emotionally distraught anc cannot follow chapters, can pick up this book, flip through it, and find words of comfort. This book was a tremendous comfort to me over 20 years ago when I suffered the loss of a love. I bought several copies to share then, and I'm thrilled to know the book is still available. I'm buying several copies again to give to people who need this help.

Summary: effective and gentle aid to assist in healing and growth
Review: I first read this book 17 years ago when I was going thru a very painful divorce; it taught me how to nurture and care for myself during that process and I have since given a hundred copies away to others to assist them on their journeys of self-discovery in their lives. This book and it's 3 capable and talented authors offer hundreds of practical suggestions to alleviate suffering and apply some emotional salve to wounded feelings and attitudes. I even learned basic nutrition and some key health concepts from this small, easy to read book. I especially like the simple prose and unpretentious, straigh-forward way the help is presented to you. In keeping with the subject matter, the info is presented in small chunks, often humor or great insight into this common human experience we call Life. I love the poem about being too sad to go to Church; could God make a housecall that day? Buy it; read it; apply it; then email me and tell me I was right. Shalom.

Summary: It gives you hope.
Review: I'm almost done reading this book and find it most helpful. It is short and easy to read, which is good, because someone dealing with a loss has very little attention span. The best thing about this book is that it lets me know that what I am going thru and how I feel is perfectly normal and to be expected. There are words on these pages that could have been taken straight from my heart. And I must disagree with the previous review -- I love the poems -- I find them inspired. If you are going thru a loss not of your choosing (mine is a divorce), I highly recommend this book to let you know you will survive and you will be ok.

Summary: A must read for anyone trying to recover from a loss
Review: Any one who has had a loss in his or her life can benefit from reading this book. It is an easy and quick read and takes you through step-by-step what to expect in the recovery process. The first time I read it, I cried as I read every page. Each successive time I read it, I cried at different parts of the book, i.e. the healing process. It helped me realize that I was actually recovering from my loss, which is a great help when you are in such pain you don't think you'll ever feel normal again.

Especially when everyone around you is trying to keep you from crying and encouraging you to forget your loss, this book gave me an outlet for my grief. It gave me permission to cry when I needed to cry, kept me from wallowing in grief as I continued to live, and helped me to accept my loss and start over.

Eventually, I was able to read the complete book without a tear.

I recommend it.

Summary: Extremely helpful for the healing journey of ANY loss.
Review: This book is written in an easy to read, to the point format. It explains the many differnt types of losses and how they can affect us. It is very affirming and encouraging. The reader can almost randomly open to a page, read it and relate instantly. I found myself thinking "that's exactly how I feel". It made me feel better just to realize that how I felt was normal. I try to keep a copy on hand to give to friends who are experiencing any type of loss in thier lives. When experiencing loss it is difficult to read someting long and drawn out and understand it. This author keeps it short and simple -- but powerful.

Summary: Best Sympathy Card
Review: I have had a copy of this book for over 20 years and I have sent it to people instead of a sympathy card. Almost everyone I have sent it to said that they read it over and over again.

Summary: a Classic
Review: As a young woman widowed twice this became my handbook and years later as a pscyhotherapist I recommend this book to my clients who are going through a divorce or a death. It is comforting to a person grieving. it is speaks to the heart, is comforting, short and easy to read. That is so important for a grieving person because it is very hard to concentrate when you're feeling so bad.
