Rating: Summary: Good, but Chap. 8 is pretty hard to take. Review: It's a pretty quick read. The book lets one come to know Carlos Hathcock as an ingenuous country boy from Arkansas who came of age in the USMC and Vietnam. I read the book over the weekend and would like to clarify someone else's comment on Amazon about the book being a bit graphic: it's not the description of Mr. Hathcock's kills that are graphic, it's the description of the unfortunate torture of a young Marine by a female Viet Cong torturer, at night, within earshot of a USMC camp. It was pretty hard to take. If you read it, you will be looking forward to her death, I promise you. It was shocking and left me unable to sleep for a couple of hours. The book also provides insights as to how the Viet Cong coerced the simple agrarian people of Vietnam into fighting a war they wanted nothing to do with, and how the war ravaged that country. It also illustrates the power of snipers in that conflict to thwart and frustrate the enemy war effort. I learned from this book that sniping is much, much more than marksmanship. It demands tracking skills and the ability to remain unseen.
Rating: Summary: Suspensful Review: MARINE SNIPER IS ALMOST PURE ACTION ALL THE WAY THROUGH. IT CONSTANLY KEEPS YOU WONDERING WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT. THE WAY CHARLES HINDERSON WRITES MAKES IT SEEM LIKE YOU ARE REALLY THERE. ITS JUST LIKE ONE OF THOSE ACTION MOVIES, BUT ITS BETTER BECAUSE IT WAS ALL REAL. WHEN I READ IT I HAD TROUBLE PUTTING IT DOWN. ITS DESRIBES THE LIFE OF CARLOS HATHCOCK VERY VIVIDLY, SEEMING TO NOT LEAVE OUT ONE MINUTE OF WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. ITS A COOL BOOK BUT IN MY OPINION, IT WAS A LITTLE OVERLY GRAPHIC IN SOME OF THE DESCRIPTIONS. ITS NOT A BOOK FOR LITTLE KIDS, BUT IF YOU LIKE MILITARY STUFF ITS GREAT!
Rating: Summary: Good characters, good story telling, good overall read Review: Chalres Henderson does an excellent job of combining action filled stories of the Marine sniper program and the life of Carlos Hatchcock. I was only in high school when I first read this book, about five years ago, and have reread it countless times.
Rating: Summary: A great story about a true hero. Review: Carlos Hathcock is amazing. How anyone could have done what he did is incomprehensible. I recommend this book to anyone up for a great read with lots of great stories. I never realized the importance of snipers in Vietnam until now.
Rating: Summary: Superb....details how the USMC sniper is trained for his job Review: Mythe, lore and history all help create the legend of the Corps. But enlisted men like Hathcock, trained to be the best, bring to life the fact that the Corps was and is people doing their job. He was the best of the best, and the Corp trained him. Read the book and understand what it is like to be "behind the lines" pulling the trigger, and your only way out is the way you came in...on your own. A truly remarkable story. Carlos is well known within the Corp then, and now. Semper Fi
Rating: Summary: Carlos was the greatest Review: I have a great amount of respect for any sniper in vietnam but the average bounty for a sniper was $12 Carlos however was worth $40,000 that is amazing.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE BETTER BOOKS OUT THERE!!! Review: Marine Sniper tells the life story of Carlos Hathcock. Hathcock is one of the most famous snipers in history having 93 confirmend kills. The book is absoulutly fabulous...edge of your seat action. The whole book wasnt about NAM, but also tells the life story of Hathcock. GREAT!!!!
Rating: Summary: bill/lillian call me sdjr714@aol.com its mike S.I. navy bas Review: hi guys give us a call haven't read your last hope to speak to you soon. how are the boys?
Rating: Summary: poorly written Review: Carlos Hathcock was a great Marine. This book is poorly written. To paraphrase another review it reads like a comic book. Carlos deserves better than how this book was written. I would never recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Long Trang Review: Chuck Mawhinney may have the Rec. in the most conffrmed kills in Nam. But Long Trang was one of the first snipers in Nam and he was the best. Not because of his long range kill at 2,500 yards but because he was the best hunter that the marines had. But lets not put his spoter on the side he was a good spoter too.. This is a grate book it tells not only of carlos but of how everbody was important too the scout/sniper program in Nam.. he was the only sniper in Nam with a bounty on his head.. In short carlos was and will all ways be the best..It not about the killing but the hunting.. Unknown S.SGT form the U.S.M.C. Force Ricon & Scout/Snpier School
