Rating: Summary: One of the best accounts of sniper warfare ever written Review: I am a former Marine and have read numerous books regarding military campaigns and I can proudly say that I have never read a more detailed account of a true proffessional than Marine Sniper. Gysgt Hathcock has shown that a true warrior does not have to be abrasive or obnoxious but can go about the task for which he has been trained and do honour to his craft. His professinalism was expressed in its entirety while he would be training new snipers and he would deselect those who it seemed obtained enjoyment from killing the ememy . I believe that this book should be required reading for all new sniper applicants . Semper Fi Gunny Hathcock.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic account! Review: In my mid thirties, this was the first non-technical book I had read since college. It was loaned to me by my TaeKwonDo instructor who had served as a Marine recon sniper in Viet Nam. My girlfriend (now wife) almost left me because I wouldn't (no couldn't would be more accurate) put it down. I started it one evening and finished it by the next, then walked around almost stunned by his story for days (she got pretty fed up with me talking about it all the time). This was the beginning for me of literally more than a hundred true account books on Viet Nam, all of them stemming from the inspiration from this book. The book is organized in chapters, each covering some incident in his tour. Offhand I cannot think of more than a couple that a sane person would believe to be true. Though it's been a year since I last read it (three times now, after writing this it will be four) I can easily think of four or five chapters that sound more like some drunken soldiers' ramblings about some mystical soldier they had only heard of who did astounding things that got more unbelievable each time the story was told. But from what I have heard from those who were there and other books on sniping that reference US military records, incredibly it's all true. Comparing Carlos Hathcock to the fictional movie characters like those portrayed by John Wayne, Stallone, Schwartzenegger and others or using the word "legend" to describe him doesn't begin to do justice to this man. He is a true Amercian hero! Somebody should make a movie about this guy.
Rating: Summary: FIRST MILITARY HISTORY BOOK I EVER READ Review: Great book I read it 8 years ago when I was in high school. I couldn't put it down. A few facts to chew on though it was an army sniper with the most confirmed kills in Vietnam, Sgt Albert F. Waldron III with 109 confirmed. But maybe I'm biased because I am a current US Army sniper. Although it's Gunny Hathcock that pointed me in the right direction. I owe it all to Marine Sniper:93 Confirmed Kills
Rating: Summary: A great Marine but a very shallow treatment of his story Review: I have nothing but the highest admiration for the man's ability and courage. The book, however, was shallow, syncophantic, and ultimately a waste of time. The Vietnamese are reduced to the basest racial stereotypes that are dangerously close to the buffoonish John Wayne movie "The Green Berets"; this in no way accurately reflects the reality of their worth as a foe. They world is full of infinitely better books and it is, quite simply, a shame that Hathcock's story is squandered on the author's sophmoric talents.
Rating: Summary: Great first hand account of Sniping in Vietnam Review: This was one of the first books on read on sniping in Vietnam and I loved it. I got me obsessed with the art of sniping. And with the Marine Scout\Sniper. The book has vivid detail in all of the aspects. From his days on the rifle team. To the day when he almost died. I found it sad about how he had to get all of those medical treatments. I found it sad when he would be trying to shoot his rifle and just couldnt because of the extreme pain. I would reccoment this book to anyone interested in sniping. I also wanted to attend the Carlos Hatchcock annual sniping tournament but unluckily was being held in virginia.
Rating: Summary: It is the best book ever written! Review: I have read every book you have talked about and none of them even come close to "Marine Sniper". No other book goes through the cold hard fact and excitement of killing the enemy!
Rating: Summary: It was accurate and very interesting Review: This is probably one of the best books I've ever read. It was filled with intense stories of the life of Carlos Hathcock. My favorite part was the chapter on the Apache. I get chills just thinking about the book. As soon as I finished it all I wanted to do was read it again.
Rating: Summary: TWO WORDS: FANTASTICALLY HEROIC Review: I read this book in two days. I could not put it down. As a young student in ROTC, I have gained the weakest glimpse of life under the stress of war. I am a member of the Rifle Team here at the university and I can somewhat relate to Hathcock's feelings and mindset behind the Unterl scope of that weapon. This is an unbelievable account of an incredible, soft spoken, and deadly soldier. My hats off to you Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hathcock and Lance Corporal Burke. You are true heroes and true Americans that set a fine example for this great country's youth. Scott Heine
Rating: Summary: A student favorite Review: I am a high school reading teacher. MARINE SNIPER has been a top favorite of the jr. and senior boys I teach. Some say it is the first book they ever enjoyed, or maybe even the first book they ever completed. A couple kept the book after they read it so their dads could read it. It helped confirm at least one student's decision to go into the marines. Great book!
Rating: Summary: An eulogy! Review: This book is superb, it left me with a feeling of what Hathcock went through, and it makes me glad i never have, and hope never to. Moving and detailed.
