Rating: Summary: you can't put it down Review: this book blew me away!mr.plaster puts so much detail in it that you can't put it down, and it makes feel that your in the mud and ozzing blood on the mission with the recon commandos.this book tells you what really happend in the jungles of Laos and Cambodia from a former SOG(studies and observation group) recon man.although i am only 11 but I was able to under stand this book.i recomend this book for people who are intetrested in spec ops and the vietnam war.
Rating: Summary: VERY WELL WRITTEN Review: I just finished reading this book. It was great. All I really want to know is if the author is the same guy I went to training group with in 1968, Ft. Bragg.. And if He could shed some light on Fred Magsamen's death in 1969. I've been trying to locate you since you appeared on a documentary Vietnam: A Solider's Story. You looked great on TV. It's been about 30 years. Richard Knapp,Sgt. Project Delta, B-52..Special Forces training Group. I would like to get in touch just to say hello.
Rating: Summary: The best book about SOG and specopns ever written. Review: John has captured the flavor of SOG that many of us live and worked in. In addition to the humor that we had, he brings to life the job that we did day after day without fanfare or recognition. The men who served in SOG were perhaps the greatest warriors this country has produced in many years. As a former recon team leader(one-zero) I relived those days when we risk our lives for our country and our fellow teammates. A tremendous book that accurately covers many of the opns we ran, the heroes that came from SOG, and the daily lives of the men involved.
Rating: Summary: SF life and group dynamics, past and present Review: As a current Special Forces soldier serving on an ODA, this book gives a great insight to what Green Berets are really created to do. The personalities and group dynamics ring true today on ODA's, and I have no doubt that our men are ready and capable of making SOG vets proud. Our soldiers are bred to be warriors like Plaster describes, and SOG's exploits serve as an excellent example as how we should train and expect to fight. In today's world we have been relegated to FID, but need to be prepared to follow in these men's footsteps. A great book and a must read for all SF soldiers. It makes me proud to be a Green Beret.
Rating: Summary: History Of Some of the Bravest Men to Serve In Vietnam Review: As a former SOG helicoper gunner (20th SOS Green Hornets) it is truely amazing that the story can finally be told on what went on so long ago in the skies and ground areas of Cambodia and Laos. To us who served, it is a tribute to an operation that to most in the military at that time did not exist. To those of us who were there, and saw the bodies returned, this was a war that will forever be in the forefront of our memories. After 28 years of putting the war behind me, this book (the first I have read on Vietnam) has helped me come to terms with my Vietnam service. I would recommend the reading to anyone unfamiliar with SOG operations. The book truly is the stuff movies are made of!
Rating: Summary: What a wonderful enlightening book Review: As the author of "Memories of Maggie" I know about many of the places Martha "Colonel Maggie" Raye went where others refused to go. However I was quite surprised to read that she had been smuggled into Leghorn (a very special outpost) in 1970. The rest of this book was just as amazing and I was surprised to read about some of the people whom I've had the pleasure to meet in the past few years. This is a book which every student and adult should read. This is the best book I've read about the Special Operations personnel and what they did.
Rating: Summary: Detailed and accurate, no mincing the words or the events. Review: I was in OP-80/JPRC in 1971-72, during the times that the recon teams were running Bright Light missions under great pressure with dwindling air support assets. These were very difficult times. The description of DeLuca's killing, the search for Butcher, and the frustration to recover our comrades-in-arms was very detailed and accurate. The author was able to help the reader understand these very emotional and personal events. Thanks for helping us cope with those events and times.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: Great read. I can only marvel at the courage and heroism of the men and their actions described in this book. It makes me proud to be an American. I would not have wanted to have been fighting against these ferocious fighters!
Rating: Summary: True American heros; I couldn't stop reading! Review: This book open a path I never knew exsisted about the Vietnam War. I never thought SOG's missions were so intense and dangers on every mission; to my amazement, SOG forces continued their mission with outstanding results, although sustaining 100% casualties. I cheered one second and felt sadden the next; the one emotion I knew, I did not want to finish this damn good book. If you like war stories, you'll love this book.
Rating: Summary: The definitive account of Macvsog and the men in it. Review: This book covers the very early years, and the original members of this amazing unit,in great detail. There is very little macho posturing here. Colonel Plaster tells it like it was. Invaulable for serious students of Special Warfare.
