Rating: Summary: Great knitters handbook for pros and novices alike! Review: My sister purchased this book for me and I love it! There is history about knitting, funny little factoids and easy to understand instructions. Plus the designs are updated and hip. Included are cell phone/PDA holder, purses, scarves & knit bikini to name a few. I have already recommended this book to my mom, my younger sister and a friend and I've only had the book a week! Great book!
Rating: Summary: my first knitting book Review: This book is fabulous for first time knitters! Debbie's new and fresh approach towards knitting gave me inspiration to pick up some needles and begin a new scarf (all with the help of her easy to read diagrams). Not only does this book have hip patterns, but it also gives a positive perspective on women knitters from the past to present.
Rating: Summary: Hip and helpful Review: This book has some of the best patterns I've seen in any knitting book--they're truly a breath of fresh air. They are hip yet easy to make. Debbie Stoller's simple and friendly instructions make this one of my favorite books. A must-have for the latest generation of knitters.
Rating: Summary: The best of the bunch! Review: I should start this review with a disclaimer: one of the patterns in the book is mine (the Princess Snowball Cat Bed). But even if that wasn't true, I would absolutely LOVE this book!!I've been a knitter for a lonnnng time, so I don't need help in the beginner-knitter department. But, if I did, Debbie's advice and instructions would have me well on the way to creating fun, wearable stuff. And the patterns! Simple - yes. But they are so cute! I can't wait to make about half of them for myself. The thing I like best about the book is that Debbie doesn't always try to present every single way to knit (/cast on/finish/block/make an edge stitch). In some cases she does this (her contrast of continental vs. English method is very good), but mostly she talks about how she prefers to do things. In a very fun and personal way, she passes on her knowledge and love of the craft to a whole new generation of knitters, the way centuries of our foresisters have done before us -- knitter to knitter, one-on-one. We love her and the book for that. If you've never knitted before, or have knitted for decades, you owe it to yourself to add this one to your bookshelf. It epitomizes the best qualities of this "new generation" of knitters, and is going to prove to be one of the reasons our great-granddaughters are knitting 100 years from now.
Rating: Summary: wonderful Review: This book is great. The patterns are really hip and up to date. Her instructions are easy to follow and her tips are useful! I love the kitty cat hat. If you are a young or young at heart knitter, this is the book for you!!
Rating: Summary: I can't believe I'm knitting! Review: I bought this book on Friday, read the book to find out the bare basics of what I need to start (in case I flaked out), got some yarn and needles on Saturday, then went back to the yarn store for supplies for the Coney Island Fireworks Scarf on Sunday. By the end of Sunday, I had nearly half of the scarf done. The woman at the store was surprised that I learned how to knit from a book. I love how the book tells you which skills are needed for each project. I was able to pick a simple pattern with only the first few skills taught in the book (all of the skills needed to make your first swatch), and now I'm so excited that I'm going to have at least one scarf to give away for Xmas. As I work up to learning more skills, I can take on projects that use them to get more practice while having a goal in mind. I recommend getting this book, buying a cheap skein and a pair of needles called for in a project you want to try (I got size 10 for the Ribbed-for-Her-Pleasure Beginners' Scarf), and practicing for a bit while making your first swatch. I also enjoyed all of the knitting information on the craft's history, recommended websites, magazines, books, and stores, and information on types of yarn, needles, and basic supplies. Debbie's passion for knitting really shows through her writing and makes you excited to learn and create. Now I'm worried that I've gotten myself into a new, expensive hobby.
Rating: Summary: Fun Knitter's Handbook Review: This is by far the most fun knitting book that I own. It has loads of helpful information on getting started (tools of the trade, changing yarn balls, reading patterns, basic stitches, using circular needles), as well as shaping (increases, decreases), and finishing (sewing your finished pieces together, blocking) and much more. The patterns include full-color photos, intros on how or why the pattern was created and designed, along with mini-bios on the contributors. Stoller also includes bits of knitting history, useful tips to follow while knitting (like when it's time to twist your cable), and how to start your own knitting group. Her writing is fun to read and very easy to follow. I'd recommend this book to seasoned knitters, and anyone who has ever thought about knitting but only needed some inspiration.
Rating: Summary: hip for todays chicks Review: i love this book. as a new knitter it was great to find a book with explinations and patterns that are no your mommas. It has a good over explaination of basics as well as some really cool patterns which look like I could actually start and finish one
Rating: Summary: First timer Review: I have tried to knit before to no avail, and with the help of this book, I just completed my first row of succesful knitted fabric! I already knew how to crochet, so I had some experience with yarn and hooks, but I could never get the hang of knitting with two sticks sans hook. This book has the best written instructions I have ever seen. I am so pleased with this purchase! THANK YOU, DEBBIE! P.S. I can't wait to make "skully!"
Rating: Summary: Most Excellent Review: This is the knitting book I've been waiting for all my life. I wish I had had this book when I learned how to knit. It has by far the best beginner's instructions I've seen because she explicitly goes over small details that other books neglect to mention, probably because those people have forgotten what it's like to learn, while Stoller hasn't. She comes up with her own logical way of explaining things, instead of writing them in "knitterese." Also, Stoller is hilarious. The patterns are also fresh and look semi-easy. I can't wait to try some. I would highly recommend this book to a beginner and also as a gift to anyone you want to lure into the hobby. Thanks Ms. Stoller!!!
