Summary: It worked for us!
Review: I recommend this book to everyone who gets a new puppy. Or even an older, non-housebroken dog. Neither my husband or I had ever housebroken a dog before. In my case, my family had only owned one, and she came to us trained. In his case, their family dogs just never got trained. So we were novices when we brought home our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I bought this book and read it before we got the dog, so we were ready to go. We got a late start in training, because we had to deal with an illness (in the dog) first. Even with waiting nearly two months to train her, I'd say we had her fairly reliable in a couple of months and completely accident free by one year, which is about right for a CKCS. She's now four and hasn't had an accident in three years. We can take her to visit friends, family and stay in hotels and not worry about a mess. The book is easy to read and offers advice for all types of situations: house dog, apartment dog, young puppy, older dog.

Summary: The most useful dog book I have ever purchased!
Review: I used this book to housebbreak my very first dog! It has an exact schedule to follow. This is the best and easiest way to housebreak your dog! I have read many dog books, and this is the only book that spelled out exactly what to do to housebreak a dog. My dog has learned to "hold it" and dooesn't even have to go out , or ask to go out every hour. I just let her out about every 3 or 4 hours and she goes right outside! She is only one year old! She was completely trained in 2 weeks!Due to this book, I just bought another puppy, because I knew I could train her!

Summary: Good Subject Specific Book
Review: I'm a first time dog owner and very willing to learn the art of dog training. I bought a few highly recommended dog training books that were good for a general overview on how to train dogs, but many briefly touch on each aspect of the whole picture, housebreaking included.

This is a good book for those who would like more specific detail on this one part of dog training. It is a quick read and has very well layed out plans for those of us that own a dog and work all day, and those of you that have the luxury of being stay-home dog parents (lucky you!). Keep in mind that the author intends this book to be used to train puppies 12 weeks and older (after they have had all their shots).

I am still in the process of housebreaking my Boston Terrier (she's only 9.5 weeks old after all), but I find this book very good for laying out a plan that fits into my schedule for when the time comes.

Of course this book can't answer all your questions and be 100% full proof in 7 days. That would be unrealistic. All dogs are not the same. Dogs differ by breed, and general personality (much like people). This book also touches on the fundamentals of dog training (train with love, not anger).

If you love your dog and are new at this, and have the patience necessary for training your dog, this book is good for you and is one step of many in the process of dog training.

Summary: Training for Anyone! Perfect Book.
Review: I've owned two dogs in my time, one I made many mistakes, my Wheaton I was determined to do it right. This book saved us and gave us a wonderful pet. IF the owner does the work. Also, seven days can turn into four or five weeks, however if you are consistent, this is a fabulous book.

Summary: This is ALL you need to housetrain your pup or dog!!
Review: If you can make it through the first 24 hours, freedom from an unhousetrained dog will be yours! It REALLY DOES WORK! I had a dog that was a 1.5 year old, I mistakingly paper trained her first and she never stopped doing what she was taught- going inside on the paper! NOT A GOOD IDEA! A family friend recommended this book and within about twenty four hours she was house trained!!! Most people would have said that I would always have a problem with her, NO way! Two years later, she's remains PERFECTLY HOUSETRAINED! In addition to this amaziing success story, I recently loaned the book to someone who was having trouble house training her new puppy; within a few days- no problem at all! Buy it, it really is well worth the money!

Summary: It works
Review: Initially I was skeptic about the seven days, having followed the rules "almost by the book" I was able to change my beagle's habits. Easy to read, easy to follow, no filler reading.

Summary: GOOD BOOK - HELPFUL ADVICE.
Review: Someone once asked me if my new, nine-week old English Cocker Spaniel was "housebroken." My response was, "If you mean has he broken just about everything in the house, his training is coming along quite nicely, thank you." Ah, the joys of a high-spirited, strong-willed puppy. It is full of surprises, much like becoming a parent again in mid-life.

When I jokingly asked a local grocery clerk if they carried that famous brand name disposable diaper for dogs yet, he actually went to check! My saving grace was those not so illustrious looking "wee wee pads" available at department stores (you want to hide them really quickly when company comes.) My new puppy proceeded to drag his pad to every available corner of the room and used it for its's original intent only when bored with game and more luxurious ammenities were not in sight! I happen to be one of those people who, unlike the author, is as opposed to "crate-training" as much as I was to keeping my three "now-adult children" in playpens when they were small.

However, my little critter definitely knows what the great outdoors was intented for and since he has discovered trees and a fenced in yard, I no longer need the advice passed on in this informative book. You will have to discover which method works best for you. Obviously, if there is not going to be anyone home during the day, or you live on the 30th floor of a highrise and nature seems as far away as the moon, training him to go outdoors is not going to work. I did find the book helpful since it does present several options, but the reader will have to determine which method works best based on their time, lifestyle and living conditions.

Summary: Simple and Successful
Review: This approach worked for our puppy (a Lab) as well. It's based on a few simple ideas, one of which is the puppy's idea of its "den", which it will scrupulously avoid soiling. It's you, the owner, who needs to understand what constitutes the puppy's notion of its den and use that to your advantage.

Dogs, like most people, are creatures of habit, so that can be used too. Set up a watering schedule that will contribute to success. Also don't try to housebreak a puppy before it's old enough to have adequate bladder control. Still, you can make it to that point without too many accidents. The book details all this.

Finally, remember Pavlov's dog. Dogs respond directly - they don't understand abstract thoughts. Start by repeating a word like "potty" over and over quietly while your puppy is relieving herself, then praise her. This will associate the word with the feeling of relief. DON'T USE THE WORD ABSTRACTLY like asking "do you want to go out and potty?" when you're in the house! (You can say "do you want to go outside?"). After "programming" your puppy about 100 times, she will pee on command when she hears the word. This will really pay off later when you're travelling, etc. The important thing is to understand that dogs take everything literally and directly and really only understand a few key words, your tone of voice, and your body language.

Try to think like a dog - it will change your whole view of the world!

Summary: This Book Is Fantastic!
Review: This book describes why most known methods of housebreaking are ineffective and unnecessary. It describes the psychology behind the method. I trained my dog by this method and must say it worked almost too well. My dog is now 8 years old and has had an "accident" in the house only once in that time due to an illness. I attribute this success to the method discussed in this book as well as to the intelligence of my dog :) . I will say that the first two days are difficult, but after that the dog will understand the 'pen". Try it, it is far less cruel than other methods.

Summary: How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days
Review: This book disappointed me. By the time I received the book, I had housebroken my puppy using the methods in the book (common sense)without even reading the book. It might help some to those who have never owned a dog before. The book is small and I think overpriced for what you get.
