Rating: Summary: The most complete and easy to read dog training book ever! Review: This book trained me as well as my dog!
Rating: Summary: Required reading for the novice and veteran trainer alike. Review: As a long time dog owner, who believes strongly in basic manners training for all dogs, I was pleasantly surprised by the common sense and practical approach to dog training that was taken by this author. This book is truly a tutorial. With all phases of the experience covered, from buying that cute little puppy to working with older dogs that require correction, Brian Kilcommons displays an easy knowledge of his subject matter and an ability to communicate his methods to the dog owners. I particularly liked his "train the owner, then train the dog" approach. This book provides the "why" in why certain methods work, not just the "what to do." It contributes to an understanding of what makes your pet tick, and how to understand and communicate with your pet. An educated owner is a happy owner. A happy owner with an educated pet is even better. An excellent and helpful text.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful approach to understanding how your dog thinks Review: If more people read this book and took the time to understand dog psychology, instead of operating from their own point of view, I am sure there would be more happy pets and fewer frustrated owners. People often have the right intentions, but lack the information on correct methods to achieve successful results. I have owned quite a few dogs, and made my share of mistakes. Thanks to this book I am having some good results with a new pup. It is to the owner's advantage to learn "dog talk", he is doing HIS best to learn "human". Also, I have found a general understanding of your dog's particular breed characteristics help in selecting the right dog for you. Some dogs are more difficult to raise, and not everyone has the patience, time or space to raise certain breeds, which means the dogs end up in "rescue". This book is excellent in helping to spot potential problems when purchasing your puppy. Heredity plays a big role in personality, trainability and in future results. This book is so well-written, well-illustrated, I would highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: A must-have book for all dog owners! Review: This is an excellent, very comprehensive book that guides you through the responsibilities of dog ownership. The easy to read text and simple step by step instructions on how to train your dog make this book one of the best I've ever read. It is useful if you are starting out with a puppy or if you have an adult dog that needs retraining. It discusses common problems dogs may have as well as useful advice on how to housetrain and socialize your dog.I recommend it highly to all dog owners!
Rating: Summary: Excellent methods that proved successful immediately Review: After reading and using the techniques in this book, I had my three year old dog healing like a champ within one week. (I tried techniques from several other books, but to no avail.) This book is very well written, easy to understand, and well illustrated. I was at the end of my patience trying to get my 'wild' dog under control. Thanks to the methods in this book, my 'wild' dog is progressing very nicely!
Rating: Summary: Good Owners Great Dogs Review: I love this book...Are there other similar books. I am buying a Golden Retriever and I have found it very helpful in the decision making.
Rating: Summary: Good Show, Great Book Review: I have been watching Kilcommons on his weekly cable show "Pet News" (FoxNews Network) for months. And I admit, I used to think I was a real idiot. I thought I could never have a dog because I'd never live a sane life. The dog would take over, chewing everything in sight, barking at everyone it sees, and eventually I'd get evicted. But somewhere deep down I knew I wanted a puppy. I just knew that I would know when I saw the perfect pup. Brian Kilcommons' book proved me right. He showed me how to select the perfect pup for me and he was even kind enough to include instructions in how to raise her! If only babies came with such wonderful books...
Good Owners, Great Dogs is great because it doesn't beat around the bush. Kilcommons tells me how and why to train my dog. I bought the book along with my first puppy, and things are wonderful. Having a puppy changed my life and Good Owners, Great Dogs is giving me the education I need. Frankly, if you haven't done your homework on how to raise your dog, THIS BOOK IS REQUIRED READING.
Criticisms: I felt like Kilcommons tried to incorporate too many tips into such a short book. It's almost too broad at times, and I found myself with a few unanswered questions.
Rating: Summary: A must have book for dog owners. Review: If you are someone who has made every possible
mistake trying to train your dog and are at
your wits end, here is a book that will guide you
through a common sense approach to develop a
wonderful and rewarding relationship between you
and your dog. I speak from experience.
The major mistake one makes in training a dog is
not realizing who is the master and who is the
dog. "Good owners, Great Dogs" will help you
realize that when a dog knows it's place in the
family, or "pack", it will begin to function in
that role. This book has become our guide, not only at the time of training our dog as a puppy, but also for answering questions as situations develop later on.
Don't just read this book, use it. After having had miserable experiences with dogs, this book has given us a remarkable gift. Our wonderful dog.
Thank you, Brian Kilcommons
Rating: Summary: Required reading for every dog owner Review: In a no-nonsense, realistic manner, Mr. Kilcommons takes the mystery out of dog training. The author makes it very clear that there are
no secrets in creating a well-trained dog, but it does require
commitment, perseverance and patience. It's truly inspirational to the novice dog owner!
Rating: Summary: excellent book for novice and experienced dog owners. Review: I am a dog obedience instructor and this is the text I recommend to all my students. It provides a sound discussion of canine behavior and how to communicate effectively with your dog. All techiniques discussed are humane, fair , and well grounded in dog behavior. If you have a dog, you should own this book
