Rating: Summary: I'm completely grateful for this book! Review: I've read this book cover to cover, twice! It set aside all of my fears of puppy training. Sometimes, when you're a parent, you think you don't have time to puppy train.
Read this book and you'll find out how wrong you are! This
book gives some of the best tips on training I have been able to find out there, from beginning housetraining to instructing you on how to train your dog to down-stay. It
teaches you to be a good owner, and how to properly work
with your dog. I'm not intimidated by training anymore, training your dog is always something that is your responsibility, and not the dog's. This book gives all the insight you could ever need on how to train your dog. Do you dog a favor and buy a copy of this book.
Rating: Summary: excellent step by step cookbook for sucessful dog training Review: This book works! In just a few short weeks, my puppy already knows and obeys sit, come, down, stay, and off! Now, we're working on "leave it". It is filled with clear steps accompanied with illustrative photos. There are also side bars with real life examples of both good training and typical mistakes
Rating: Summary: Great training method Review: This is by far one of the most informative dog training books I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Brian Kilcommons has apprenticed under Barbara Woodhouse(a renowned British dog trainer), and worked a lot of his younger years apprenticing for other trainers as well. He has a good understanding of a dog's behaviour and what a dog is thinking. His training methods are humane and his black and white photos are great. He has methods for curing some of the most troublesome problems.Brian Kilcommons in not some self-appointed know-it-all, he actually knows what he's doing and his methods have worked for thousands of dogs. I was introduced to the "No free lunch!" policy while reading this book, and every dog should be under it! He also explains about aggression, and where it can come from and how to deal with it. Though some people may not be fond of his training collar, as it can be tricky to use and is very easy to make mistakes with it, his overall training method is great. I also like how he doesn't abuse the treat reward method, where every good thing a dog does, he gets a treat. It can be hard to wean a dog off treats, and never using them,(or using them sparingly to initially teach the command) is a great method.
Rating: Summary: Practicle Dog Training Advice Review: As the author of "ASK OKSANA," a tongue-in-cheek dog advice website that is 'written' by a delusional Borzoi dog, when fans write in and ask serious behavior/training questions, GOOD OWNERS, GREAT DOGS is the only book that is recommended to ASK OKSANA's fans because Brian Kilcommons is one of the few dog trainers that really knows what he is doing. In this simple book, Kilcommons is able to impart his practicle dog training methods so that one can follow his advice and actually see results rapidly. There's no magic to obedience training; it's a matter of establishing who is Alpha and conveying your commands to the dog and praising instantly when the dog is doing what you want him to do. Yes, there are others who preach food rewards and clicker training, but what do you do when you have no treats or the clicker? This book teaches the basics and gives advice on other important subjects like introducing a new pet to the household and other areas where owners commonly make mistakes. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Do your dog a favor and BUY THIS BOOK Review: The advice in this book is fabulous. It works like a charm. Follow the advice in this book, and you will end up with the dog of your dreams. Common sense advice in a relaxed, easy to read format. In March, 2001, my husband and I got a puppy and brought him home and he cried all night. The next day, out of desperation, I raced to the bookstore and read through every training book there. I bought this one, and it changed everything. Our dog has been a wonderful addition to our family, and we credit a lot of that with what we learned from this book.
Rating: Summary: Great Book, Dog Owner Must Have Review: I got this book for about a week or two. It was great, it teaches you how to train your dog properly, aviod misleading/ confusing your dog, grooming, care.... I tried a few of his training methods on my baby Pug, it works pretty good. This book works well on any type of dogs, if you got a dog that is subborn, he will teach you how to train them and understand your dog. A+++
Rating: Summary: Every dog owner should have this! Review: I have a lot of dog books and this is my favorite. When someone I know is getting a new dog, this is the gift I give to them AND their new pup. It's very good for the inexperienced or new owner but it's also a great reference for the more experienced as well.
Rating: Summary: necessary guide for any dog owner Review: I was recommended this book by a friend who is heavily involved with dog training - she swore by it and stated that it was practically the bible of dog training. I went and got a copy - and haven't been disappointed so far.
I have fostered 2 dogs (a foxhound and a walker hound cross) and now own a greyhound - all three were rescues that arrived at a veterinary hospital here and had very specific behaviour problems when they came to me - fear (most of all), aggression, uncertainty, separation anxiety, and for the most part complete lack of basic behavioural/ house training. They had all been abused in the past, neglected and poorly socialized, but each had a willing spirit and desire to form a trusting relationship. I used Kilcommons' book often to help lay the groundwork with each of these dogs to address their issues, socialize them and establish a loving, lasting bond. My foster dogs are now happily adjusted with their forever families as is my greyhound (who spends the majority of the day sleeping and dreaming).
Kilcommons' book is a must-read guide for any dog owner. His patient, understanding and sensitive narrative dictates a very gentle and overall humane approach to training your dog or puppy. The pages are richly illustrated with helpful pictures which instruct you visually on various training techniques. Though a lot of it caters towards new puppy owners, dog owners who have acquired an adult dog with behavioural issues from the shelter or rescue organizations will find that they can use many of these techniques as well.
All things said and done - this is an amazing book that will help you through many bumps in the road with your new dog. Any owner will be deeply appreciative and so will your dog... from new puppies to the many rescued dogs, who may have once thought humanity had given up on them, but have finally found a loving, understanding home with you.
Rating: Summary: Best Book for New Dog Owners Review: I bought this book when we got our Australian Shepherd in feb. 04. It has been a tremendous help! We learned to not let little things get out of hand and to gently correct our dog. Our friends and family say we have the best behaved dog they've ever seen and I give all the credit to this book by Brian Kilcommons. We have decided to forgo obedience classes for our dog and instead use the methods Mr. Kilcommons uses in this book as our basic guide for obedience and manners. I have given this as a gift to other new dog owners we know- they love it too!
