Summary: A fantastic adventure...
Review: I can't really say anything new about this book, because it has already been said by the countless reviewers before me. I am just in awe. What a wonderful journey I was on! Diana Gabaldon has spun quite a yarn, leaving me to make my own "Scottish noises." Luckily, I have the next book in the series to ease my withdrawl!

Summary: A True Literary Classic
Review: I first found Diana Gabaldon's books 4 years ago when I stumbled across Dragonfly in Amber and picked it up because it had a pretty cover. I started to read it and was completely confused, but curious enough to check the cover more carefully and find out that it was a sequel! After putting that one on hold for a bit, I tried again with Outlander and was completely immersed into the world of Scotland, 1743. This is by far the best book I have ever read. I have always loved historical novels and romance novels, and this was the best of both worlds. Everything that I thought was lacking in the novels I had read before, this one had. The writing is graphic and ugly at times, but it is honest and that's what books are supposed to be like. Claire is the best heroine I have ever read. She's strong and realistic and even though we don't know what she looks like, we know her so well. Jamie is the most memorable hero I have ever read. He's unlike any other man I have ever seen in print. After 4 years and countless hours of reading, I still can't put this book down once I start reading it again! Diana Gabaldon is a fabulous writer, and this book and the ones that follow it are wonderful gifts to the world of literature.

Summary: Excellent time travel adventure
Review: I absolutely loved this book. It has romance, adventure, history! The characters seem like real people. I feel like I have new friends after reading this series. The settings are easy to visualize. Gabaldon is a master storyteller!

Summary: Wonderful Experience
Review: Being of Scottish decent this book was a wonderful journey through the hills of Scotland. The author evidently researched the area and history of the dates involved in the book. A wonderful "time traveler" experience!

Summary: The Most Memorable Series I Have Ever Read
Review: I just finished reading all the online reviews of this book and really enjoyed everyone's opinions. It was like participating in a gigantic book discussion. I am an avid reader, and long time member of a book discussion group. I have read thousands of books in my life but I can honestly say this one is in my top five favorites. The only other characters as memorable to me are Catherine and Heathcliff. DG is such a gifted writer. I too consumed all of her books in record time to the dismay of my husband and children (although my husband appreciated it in the long run). They are so addictive. I just bought the companion book and cannot wait to read it also (although it will make me read them all over again). I too, have been to Scotland several times in my life and can attest to DG's skill in describing that beautiful country. I can't wait for the next book, but being a mother, I also don't want to pressure DG to neglect her family too much just to rush out the next one to appease her many fans. However long we have to wait, it will be worth the wait I am sure!

Summary: I know a great book when I read it!
Review: Outlander and the other three published books in this series (Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager and Drums of Autumn) are simply the BEST books I've ever read! They have it all; wonderful characters (both good and bad), intriguing plot lines, breathless romance and in depth history. I couldn't put any of them down when I read them in Nov/Dec 1998 and now I'm making my way through the unabridged recordings. I am anxiously awaiting Book 5 of the series. I highly recommend this series to anyone who wants a fabulous read! You won't be disappointed.

Summary: Outlander
Review: This book kept me entranced thorugh every page. Very soundly written with historical details creating a vivid picture of Claire's daily adventures. It has it all, adventure, personality, conflict, and a believable romance. Not the kind that is very obviously going straight to the bed! Loved it!

Summary: Tissue paper plot depends too much on "circumstance"
Review: Execrably bad. The heroine, of course, is smarter than everyone else, but predicatably goes all stupid when she meets the virginal (!) younger man. She's conveniently given plot information in a series of tedious expositional chunks before she goes back in time and then, amazingly, runs into *everyone* she needs to in order to be able to use this information.

I found it hard to believe that this woman would give up so quickly on trying to find a way back to her own time that she would marry and bed this other man partially because of just simple common sense and partially because these characters are so poorly written that nothing about them - even their "love affair" - rings true.

This book requires a suspension of disbelief that is beyond belief. I literally threw the book across the room when Claire, suspected by the Scots clan who has taken her in anyway, is put in charge of the medical care of *everyone* even though they have no idea who she is. Uh huh. "Sure, total stranger, give us medicine, we trust you." Puh-leeze.

This book rates only one star because it is obligatory; otherwise, such a poorly written, poorly plotted, bloated doorstop of a book would have received a 0 from me.

Summary: Terrific!
Review: I had heard about this book for a couple of years before I finally broke down and bought it. I could not put it down. I literally read the thing in 2 days. The first part starts out slowly, but once the heroine goes back in time, the book just seems to fly by. I have the rest of the series, and I love the way the author introduces characters and the way they pop up again later when you least expect it. Jamie and Claire are like real people, with their own faults and assets. Fascinating time period, fascinating characters.
