Rating: Summary: Her experience w/ poetry make her books "beautiful" to read. Review: Having read lots of the classics, especially Dickens, it was a real pleasure to experience the special "flow" of words in this first book by Maya I have read. Being a musician, I was pleased with the "rhythms" also. I bought 3 other books by her and look forward to reading them also.
Rating: Summary: Had to read it for school, good overall Review: In my county there has been talk of banning this book, and it actually was last year. This year, however, they put it back in the curriculum. I wasn't overly crazy about the book, but I have to say Mrs. Angelou is a wonderful writer. I agree with the themes in this book, and share Maya's ideals, but the book didn't really catch my interest. It's not like I don't like to read or anything (cause I love to) but for some reason it didn't enthral me. Its probably more of a womans book. l also find it a funny choice for a bunch of white, upper middle class suburbian teens to have read, and then act suprised when they hate the book. I also find no reason to ban the book. The rape scene wasn't at all handled bad. Also, the whole book has a rather sour taste to it now after having to take a million pages of notes on it.
Rating: Summary: she is one of a kind... i wish i knew her as a friend... Review: i was asenior in high-scchool when some one gave me this book... i read it for all that it was worth, and came out a much more rounded human being. you can't help but fall in love with this awkward girl... because no matter what race, we have all been in situations that we can't comprehend why... but as we grow older we are expected to look beyond that question...still not knowing why. hopefully this story can help fill in that gap .
Rating: Summary: A look at the black female's quest for self acceptance Review: This book is one "Phenomenal" Woman's journey through the trials and tribulations of growing up. It is an autobiographical look at Maya's childhood and teen years. Its a great read. Entertaining, honest, and at times, funny. You can feel what it's like growing up a Black female during the Depression. Maya needs to find her own self worth, self esteem, and self acceptance, and the reader is along for the ride. Highly recommendable reading for all women!
Rating: Summary: A powerful narration of emotions. Review: I've never read Maya Angelou before and I was really impressed by her style. I've enjoyed this book because although it describes in a very detailed way the very sad aspects of racism; it also describes certain situations with a good sense of humour. It also portrays the values and richness of the African American Culture. The book is full of different "feelings" which make you laugh, cry and let you be part of the different stages in which Maya goes through. I like the way she clarifies different situations in which the African American way of dealing with things is described, because this let you see the situation from their point of view and at the same time introduces you to their culture. I enjoy the detailed narration of the sad and the happy moments of her life. It is also very easy to perceive her relationship with the different people in her life. This book is one of those which you don't want to finish, so I'm looking forward to reading the following titles of her autobiography because I really want to know more about the way her life has developed and to be treated again by her powerful narrative style. What a wonderful woman she must be!
Rating: Summary: Ms. Angelou is an inspiration to all. Review: As a student, I have been asked to research an author that I knew nothing about. I chose Maya because she was always an interest. I read this book to learn more about her. I have discovered that I wish I had learned more about her sooner. Her book inspires people of all races and ages to stop their dreaming and go for their dreams. All her books, especially this one, gives us hope. Thank you, Maya Angelou.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ Review: MAYA IS PROBABLY THE MOST INTERESTING AND FASINATING WOMAN OF ALL TIMES. WITH THIS ACCOUNT OF HER LIFE WHICH SEEMS SO UNBELIEVABLE AT TIMES, SHE POETICALLY DESCRIBES HER FASINATING LIFE. I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN AND CONTINUED TO READ EACH AND EVERY ONE OF HER BOOKS IN SEQUENCE. THE WAY SHE WRITES DRAWS YOU INTO HER LIFE AND MAKES YOU WAIT ANXIOUSLY FOR HER NEXT MOVEMENT. READING HER IS LIKE READING MUSIC - IT JUST FLOWS SO SWEETLY. PLEASE READ ALL HER BOOKS IN SEQUENCE SO YOU CAN GET A FULL VIEW OF WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE THIS WOMAN HAS GOTTEN TO EXPERIENCE. HER LIFE EXPERIENCES CAN BECOME YOUR OWN. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ HER NEXT BIOGRAPHY - WHAT HAPPENED TO HER AFTER SHE CAME BACK FROM GHANA.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely superb! Review: What can I say? The accurate representation of the hardships and prejudices encountered by a young black girl growing up in the South are portrayed so realistically and with such passion, I felt I was there. Not only did I feel I knew the characters intimately, I could understand their motives. An excellent book I'm sure I will read time and again!
Rating: Summary: It's about her life during the Depression Review: I thought it was a really good book because she goes into full depth of how life was like to be black in an all white community. It was kind-of boring because I had to read it for school, but i bet if I took my time, I would probably enjoy it more.
Rating: Summary: A heart-felt, soul touching, emotional, inspiring story. Review: This story is the most interesting book I have ever read in my life. I am 17 years old and am not real interested in reading, but this story kept me so interested. I did not put this book down until I was finished. It was an exceptional story, and very inspirational.
