Rating: Summary: Best Book Ever (as comic book guy would say) Review: This is easily one of the greatest books i've read. Not only well written, but interesting. It's actually fun to read this book. I deffinatley reccomend this book to all readers.
Rating: Summary: Power of Music Review: Believing that music saved my life, if not my sanity, I can personally relate to this text. If highschool was hell and you took comfort in music; if the world seems a bit out of sorts and you are only able to make sense of it through song lyrics; if you have ever believed in something so strongly that you were willing to sacrifice yourself to distribute the message to others, then read this book. The writing is a bit rough around the edges and the text lacks the slick polish of most trade publications, however these are assets not liabilities. The voice is raw and gritty -- just like the story.
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: I ended up picking up this book at Newbury Comics in Harvard Square where I work. It totally drew me in, grabbed hold of me for a week. I'm still thinking about it. Even though I was never really a part of the punk scene, I still felt a strong connection with the main character Frank. Always feeling sort of like an outsider, wanting to be known as someone outside the crowd. I can't wait for the next book.
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: I picked this book up totally on a whim. I've only read about a fourth of the book but man it's great. It hits so close to home with me. I'm mostly a "jazzhead" but the feeling that I got when I first heard jazz was the same feeling that Frank had towards punk music. I'm a musician and an artist so I understand the feeling that music has on a soul. Almost everything Frank went through growing up in a small town I have experienced all the way through college. This is a great book for anyone who loves music, not just punk music, any kind of music. I would have given it 5 stars but nothing in this world is perfect.
Rating: Summary: Reality at its most real Review: Salad Days is a freakin' rad book. The character development in Frank ( the main character) is what really made me dig this story. I literally read half of it in one day. That may not impress most people, but that's a lot for me, being the reading challenged guy I am. I'm not in the punk scene, but I still was able to feel a part of it through Charles' beautiful descriptions of the different bands and the philosophy and mindset that makes up punk. Buy this book, don't think about it and consider it, just buy it. No, stop reading this, buy the book now!
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: Salad Days drew me in from the start. I finally picked it up the other day, and I could not put it down. It is absolutely amazing. It really hits close to home about a lot of things. I could totally relate and reminisce, and I could picture people I knew as characters throughout the book. The book was very well written and inspired me to start my own. I'd suggest anyone who likes a good read to pick it up.
Rating: Summary: Truly touched me Review: Hey I just got done reading this novel about two seconds ago and I felt obligated to tell how much I absolutely loved it. Every second I could get to myself I read this book. I work 50 hours a week, take care of a five-month-old little boy, and go to school. So time is really of the essence to me. I was going to buy this book online but I spotted it at a Propagandhi, Avail, and J-Church show, so I just picked it up there. This is the best book I have ever read! I felt like I was right there in it. What I really liked was Frank's attitude. This book truly touched me. I will keep it with me always.
Rating: Summary: Hell yeah.. awesome read. Review: The book is terrific. I love books that have a real feel to them, and are authentic. This book is straight up legit. Every detail is right, and the mention of bands when they were first starting out before they went onto become legends (like Operation Ivy) make this book a fun read. The message it sends is also really good. It's very inspiring to anyone who has ever thought of getting into music. The author does a killer job at describing each place, making you feel as if you were there yourself. I know this as a fact because his description of Ocean City was dead-on. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys reading about the punk scene of the past, and where it was heading. The book just has alot of emotional power to it. That's rare to find these days. I can't recommend it enough. Read it now.
Rating: Summary: The book is absolutely amazing. Review: I loved it. Even just reading the first page, the intro, I knew I would love it. It hasn't bored me once, and it is written SO well. A perfect job of writing in such a way that someone not from the punk scene is going to understand everything and not be confused, but there is no over-explaining things, so it doesn't come off as corny for people who are familiar to this. There are lines that I just love...and the little lyrics dropped in here and there, clever. I miss Specky and I miss Stanley. And I hated Billy. I think it's fantastic, I'm telling everyone to read it.
Rating: Summary: READ IT! Review: A short time ago I was too busy to read, but recently being laid off has its perks. I was given the opportunity to read this book. What do I think? I think you'd be a fool not to read it. There is a strict attention to detail to the characters that you find in veteran writers, and it's not like the overkill you sometimes find. Extra bonus for me is that some of the scenes took place twenty minutes away from my house. All in all this book has done a lot to change me personally, the way I think about things, and I'm sure it would have the same impact on anyone else. SO READ IT!
