Rating: Summary: A mixture of emotions- an excellent book. Review: This book is a real treasure- I'd reccommend it for any female in her twenties or thirties. It made me laugh out loud in some bits, sad in some bits and made my stomach flutter in others.Well worth a read.
Rating: Summary: A laugh out loud book. Review: Anna Maxted really hits the nail on the head when it comes to describing the life of a young single woman. I found myself laughing out loud (not something I often do) and giggling to myself while reading this book. This is a must read for all your single friends. Anyone who has lost a relative, dated a fool, or had dysfunctional family and friends will love this book. It reminded me of "Brigit Jones Diary" which is another book I enjoyed.
Rating: Summary: In This Post-Bridgetian Era.... Review: Comparisons to Bridget are easy...British single woman, ornery boss, fabulous girlfriends and disposable men...but I enjoyed Maxted's novel much more. Far less contrived than her famous counterpart, Helen Bradshaw is a character worth caring about. Her flaws, fears, hilarious antics and misguided pursuits give shape to a multi-dimensional character that does not need any literary gimmicks. Frankly, I was tired by the second installment of Bridget's Diary (The Edge of Reason, a most appropriate subtitle). Maxted is a talented, engaging and fluid writer. I hope that her worthwhile effort is not buried underneath all of the hype associated with Bridget and its upcoming film adaptation. As much as I have fallen into the trap of comparison, "Getting Over It" is quite worthy of being set apart.
Rating: Summary: GETTING OVER IT IS A WINNER! Review: How utterly refreshing to read a novel about a believable, realistic female character and her daily follies. I have a lot of girlfriends who are exactly like the main character, Helen Bradshaw. Also, I was able to indentify with some of her daily struggles. This is a funny, fictional account of one woman's issues with life, death, work, her mother, her grandmother, friends, and boyfriends (or at some points, her lack thereof.) It begins with Helen's life being instantly turned upside down by her father's death. She spends the rest of the novel trying to piece her life back together. Some of the things that happen along the way are really humorous. I highly recommend this book. It's a light, funny read for anyone who is just looking for something to take to the beach this summer or likes to relax with a good book, this is the one! Enjoy it, I did :)
Rating: Summary: immensely funny and all over good book! Review: i think this book was great. It was one of those books where you could always imagine a picture of what was going on. i don't read very many books but i read a review on it and thought i'd give it a try and once i opened the front cover and started reading i just couldn't put it down. It takes you through alot of emotions, some happy, some sad and some where you really don't know what to feel. I thouroughly enjoyed this book and was quite sad when i had finished it. I just hope she writes another novel pretty quick!
Rating: Summary: a very fun and illuminating read Review: Getting Over It is an impressive first effort by a talented author. She has a sharp wit and an unerring ear for dialogue. Her characters were endearing and memorable -- I recommend this book most highly.....
Rating: Summary: FABULOUS "STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS" WRITING Review: I followed this, no flipping back and forth like in the Girls Guide. Anna Maxted's writing is clear and conscise with wit and humour thrown in throughout. Her previous experience as a sex columnist is obvious in her hard hitting details about looking for Mr. Right in the 90's (or now 2000). Although the book deals with getting over a parent's sudden death, Helen Bradshaw, the main character, reveals all in a stream of consciousness style that makes her one of the most entertaining and likable characters out in the summer reading. GET IT TODAY; YOU'LL LOVE IT!
Rating: Summary: Every Single Girl Needs One Review: Every young woman who laughs at herself will surely enjoy the antics of GETTING OVER IT's heroine,Helen Bradshaw. I found myself in a whirlwind of memories as I shared Helen's many relationships--the distanced father, the controlling mother, the Gestapo boss, the knight in shining armor, the one-night stand gone awry, all the way up to the friend with a low self esteem; THIS BOOK TOUCHES ON SOME OF THE REAL SITUATIONS IN LIFE. Every one of my single female friends will receive this novel from me, for as they laugh and cry outloud, there are some real lessons to be learned about getting over bad situations and growing into healthy adulthood.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! A girl with real feelings! Review: I bought this in true Bridget Jones form, and was pleasantly surprised. "Getting Over It" has some great lines, but more importantly, it has an amazing connection to anyone who's suffered a loss - death or otherwise, as well as moments of foot-in-the-mouth disorder, and "I can't believe you're my friend" realizations. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Why are British women funnier than American women? Review: When I started this book, I was a little annoyed by some of the cutesy remarks made by Helen. I soon changed my opinion. I loved this book; whenever I had a spare minute, I'd read more. Both B Jones are two of my all time favorites and this is worthy of the same praise. Highly recommended.
