Summary: A Truly Great Book!
Review: I picked this book only beacause of the great reviews from other readers. I was not disappointed. I was able to relate to the main character and I found myself laughing out loud many times at her and with her. With the excellent writing style of this book I felt like I was actually there listenting instead of reading it. Well Done!

Summary: What a wonderful book!
Review: I bought this book without realizing the title referred at least in part to the main character, Helen, getting over the loss of her father, and the realization that the relationship we would all like to have with our parents was not going to happen for them. I expected a light book that would make me laugh.

What I found was a book that was sometimes light and irreverent. It had me in stiches on one page, then touched and crying along with Helen the next. It made me think about our recent loss (my adored mother-in-law) and I empathized with the jumble of emotions Helen experienced. I think that anyone who has lost a loved one, or that doesn't have an ideal relationship with their parents, whether the parents are living or deceased, will be able to identify with her.

Helen has a sharp sense of humor, very petty and cruel at times, but very funny. It served her well through her relationships with her loser boyfriends. I wish I could recall some of her lines when dealing with people that frustrate me. She is funny, but makes a lot of mistakes within her relationships.

The book also deals with the issue of physical abuse, and I think it handles it well. It also shows the value of friendships, no matter how strange your friends may be.

I highly recommend this as a funny and touching read.

Summary: EXCELLENT READ!
Review: I absolutely loved this book! Very funny, yet deep at the same time. I loved this book even more than Bridget Jones Diaries... Very realistic characters and incidents. All of the relationships explored were very realistic (familial, friends, love. I especially adored the love story within. It was very sweet and very realistic. Definitely one of my all-time favorite books. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh out loud and become completely consumed in this delightful book! The only negative thing I can say about this book is that it ended!

Summary: Geting Over It
Review: I am only on chapter 10. It didn't take me long to bond with the main character Helen Bradshaw. I would like to have her as a friend. The book deals with serious subjects (death of Helen's father) and her love relationships with different guys. She is a funny and sad character which at 26 still has alot to learn. It is a good summer read and I am really enjoying it.

Summary: A MUST HAVE BOOK
Review: This is the first time for me to read something of Anna Maxted. And to tell you the truth, I enjoyed reading every word of this hilarious novel.

I liked the writer style, the characters, the funny incidents and many other elements in this book. Which makes it A MUST HAVE BOOK!

Get it, and you will like it. Enjoy :)

Summary: A Sequel Please!
Review: I first picked up Getting Over It, read the back cover, and immediately put it down due to lack of interest. Days later I was still desperate for a new book and, almost reluctantly, decided to give it a try. What a giant surprise! After reading so many generic books about the modern day life of a 20-30 year old woman, Getting Over It was anything but generic. After reading a book with Anna Maxted's witty style it's hard to go back to another author. No one is as creative, hilarious and insightful as Anna Maxted. She captures our insecurities while also showing our strengths. A book not only about romantic relationships but about those with our parents and friends as well. My mom has now read it and is recommending it, as it not only made her laugh, but gave her insight into her own relationship with her mother. Please write a sequel!

Summary: Glad I Gave it a Second Chance
Review: This book has compelled my to write my first Amazon.com review -- few books make my laugh out loud and bring me to tears within the space of a few pages (and while sitting in a Wal-Mart McDonald's Express, no less!). Yes, this is in the "Bridget" mode (which I'm a fan of) but Maxted's Helen is not a Bridget clone and issues are addressed here (e.g., grief, dysfunction, independence) in a humorous but affecting manner (reminded me more of Nick Hornby's books than the Bridget books). The character did seem shallow to me at the beginning of the book -- I actually put it down after the first few chapters and read another book -- but I'm very glad I gave it a second chance and got to know Helen et al better (esp Tom, even it he does "put his hands up dogs' bottoms"). Great one liners, great scenes, romance, issues, and lots of humor -- will make an excellent chick flick!

Summary: Males will enjoy this book, too
Review: I thought this book was cool, and I don't understand why the other reviewers are singling out female readers as the only possible audience that would enjoy it. A good book, this is. I do agree with the other reviewers that it's a great choice for a book to take along on your vacation. Light, and just right.

I also recommend another terrific, hilarious book about twenty-somethings to put in the beach bag: "Love Songs of the Tone-Deaf" by Asher Brauner.

Summary: A brilliant debut novel!
Review: I loved every minute of this book. Anna Maxted has truly written a gem of a first novel. I found myself laughing out loud at Helen and her trials and tribulations. The chicken at the window had me chuckling to myself all afternoon long!

I recommend this book to any 20-30 something woman dealing with careers, men, family, life...who just wants to get a kick out of the crazy things another 20-30 something is going through in all of the above.

I'd love a sequel! Anna, you are brilliant!

Summary: You can definitely relate (and laugh)
Review: Helen Bradshaw is like your best friend who is going through a lot of crap, making some bad decisions, and you can't help her because she won't listen- she just has to "get over it" herself. She's a jerk to her roomate (okay, he deserved it, but still...), it's so obvious to all that love her that she is not coping with her dad's death at all, and she keeps making tremendously stupid mistakes (mostly through poor communication and bad assumptions) with Mr. Potentially Right. However, she does work very hard to get on with her life- I was proud of her. You should know that this book is sad in parts- it is not a laugh a minute, but I liked that- it was more genunine and relatable that way.

Maxted is very funny and with a great knack for universal truths presented with a huge sense of humor- For example, "[In college], the majority of students were present to extend their sex education, so if you wanted action you could usually find it. Jabba the Hutt would have scored. Indeed, I kissed him myself on several occasions." I'm glad I wasn't the only one.

I read this book right after "Welcome to My Planet"- This book is very similar (there are even characters named "Flo" in each- go figure). This book is not as big an exaggerration as Bridget, but if you like Bridget-esque things, you'll definitely like this book.

As a side note- I'd really like a book about a 30 year old woman who is NOT working some menial job and does NOT have an apartment that is a COMPLETE mess. The rest of her life can still be a disaster- that's the part we all relate to.
