Rating: Summary: definitely not marian keyes Review: a bit like reading staccato. too choppy. i thought the author was trying a bit too hard to be witty, and it showed in the story line. i finished it, but mainly only because i started it. of course, i'd just finished reading 4 marian keyes books in a row, so maybe i was setting myself up for disappointment with this one. maybe something to read when you're at the bookstore and you're at a loss as to what to pick up next. other than that, naaa.
Rating: Summary: Laugh Out Loud Book! Review: Anna Maxted couldn't have done better writing this book! When you read this, you think, "Poor Helen!!!" But you can not help to laugh at her day to day life with work at GirlTime, out and about with her friends, her luck with men, roommates....and how could I forget Fatboy (her cat)!!! There are tons of pieces in this book that I could not help myself laughing out loud...such as her tequila incident, Fatboy and his run-ins with Marcus (one of her flat mates), the conversations with her and friends, Fatboy at the vets, her friend's little outburst at the pub, and soooo many more! In addition to all the laughs there are some very serious underlining issues for Helen to overcome...dealing with death of her Father is the major one, and helping her friend, Tina - BUT you'll have to get the book!!! Very realistic and I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Laugh out loud funny Review: I'm not one to laugh out loud while reading, but this book is incredibly witty, well written, and sensitive to the complicated human mind. I loved her character, her vulnerability and all of her eccentricities. A must read!!!
Rating: Summary: Witty Review: Painfully predictable but a fun read just the same.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put this one down! Review: This book is terrific. While it has enough fluff in it to keep one entertained and laughing out loud, there is also a very serious element which gives the book more depth. Maxted gives her reader a raw and true portrayal of the shattered world of someone who has faced a terrible loss, and must rebuild that world with the now (seemingly) unimportant pieces which are left behind. A perfect mix of humor and emotion. I liked this book much better than her second effort, "Running in Heels." I can't wait for Maxted to publish another one.
Rating: Summary: Getting Over It Review: I read two chapters of this annoying and tedious British dribble. Every paragraph and I can't emphasize enough that every paragrah includes some type of nonsense pop culture metaphor. The author is trying much too hard to be witty and hip. It's obvious the authors ulterior motive is to somehow turn this into a motion picture. Which by if some disastrous miracle it happened this flick would no doubt be a direct to video release.
Rating: Summary: Impressed Review: I was impressed by this book. As someone before me warned, it's not full of concepts you can sit around & ponder (for very long). It's not a "literature story". But it is a good book. Fun, quick read. It's funny, sad, happy. It's just kinda cool, you're kind of peeking in on this 20-something woman and watching her life, her mistakes, her triumphs. I don't read much modern romance & no (gasp) I haven't read Bridget Jones, but maybe I will now.
Rating: Summary: Getting Over It Review: Who among us hasn't been told to "get over it"? Killing time while a friend used the microfiche machines in the library, I picked up a library copy of Anna Maxted's book and started to read. By the third chapter, I had to leave. A few days later, I bought the book. Maxted's British wit is priceless and I was delighted with my purchase. I went back and bought her other books and hope they are just as entertaining. Maxted finds the humor in the pain and makes us laugh (have you ever laughed during a funeral?)even though we know we shouldn't. If you like Anna Maxted, try CONSTABLE'S RUN by Laurie Moore, just out.
Rating: Summary: I am now an Anna Maxted FAN! Review: I picked up "Running in Heels" because the cover was so colorful and couldn't resist buying it after I read the back. I read it in 3 days (hey, I work) and promptly recommended it to all of my friends. Maxted has a knack for making you fall in love with the flawed heroine and slaps you in the face with conflicts you never expected.
Rating: Summary: get over it already Review: well, this was definitely better than "running in heels". after reading that novel, i was determined not to pick up another book by anna maxted. but, i caved.... "getting over it" was, in part, enlightening. it took the reader through a step-by-step process of getting over the death of a loved one, from more than one perspective (helen as the daughter, ceceilia as the wife, and nana flo as the mother). each had their own way of coping (or not). they were all ultimately hurt deeply by their loss of their loved one as well as what they missed when he was alive (due to his personality or lack there of). at times this dragged. however, it was much more enjoyable for me than "running in heels". there were funny points throughout. i thought that helen's relationships with her boyfriends, friends (male and female) were a bit drawn out. it is always fun to watch the girls go out (with an occasional male friend thrown in, that would be luke). luke was a wonderful picture of a man-friend. he was reliable in every sense of the word. overall, it is an okay read.
