Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I like the "singleton" genre of books that became so popular after "Bridget Jones' Diary," but I wanted to hurl this one across the room. The main character, Helen, was annoying and a nitwit, and the other characters were just as unlikable.I gave it two stars instead of 1 for a few funny bits. However, I did like the author's style, and would give another book of hers a chance.
Rating: Summary: Definitely a worthwhile read Review: Read it. Anna Maxted can write. She can tell a tale. I've read her other book, Running in Heels, but it wasn't quite as accessible due to the nature of the protagonist's problems. Getting Over It is something we can relate to, whether or not we've lost a parent. It's that whole issue of being left rudderless, without an anchor, by someone dying. What is life? What do you do? Apparently, you can deal with it through humor and class, as Anna shows.
Rating: Summary: The trials and tribulations of a young woman Review: A young English woman has been drifting along in her career, love life, and life in general when her father dies suddenly. She reexamines her life and relationships and eventually sorts them out with all kinds of funny twists and turns. The men in her life are very imperfect and her female friends are all too perfect, on the surface. She learns to accept what she needs and get rid of what she doesn't in often hilarious fashion.
Rating: Summary: Irritatingly Irresistable Review: This book is written in such a way that you become intimately acquainted with the main character, Helen Bradshaw. You see her world, feel her feelings and think her thoughts - from that perspective, it is extremely well written and hard to put down. It's written in a way that makes the reader feel introspective. Also, it's done with humour and real emotion - a compelling combination. It's filled with life, love, death and redemption - concepts woven well into a simple story line. The only negative? I thought the author relied a little too much on soap opera techniques. The main character repeated the same type of mistake a bit too often and I felt this was used to advance the story, rather than coming up with a bit more of a plot. Being a fan of the young British writers, I was pleased with my first Anna Maxted book and would read another one.
Rating: Summary: Rollercoaster of Emotions Review: Half of the time I was laughing, the other half I was upset at the nievety and seemingly stupid decisions the main character made with her life (even though I could related every one of them to either myself or someone I know). This is a fun, well-written book by an author who I will continue to follow. You have to love a book that runs the gamut of emotions. A bit long, but that just makes you crave to skip and look at the last few pages more and more...

Rating: Summary: A perfect rainy day read! Review: I just snapped the cover shut on my copy of "Getting Over It" with a big grin on my face. I highly recommend this book - its a light and easy read for a boring, rainy day when you need a few laughs and even a few tears! Its so nice to read about female characters who are not all gorgeous and perfect and without faults - the character Helen is that quirky, sometimes annoying person that everybody knows. Give this book a shot! I am now going to start reading "Running In Heels" - Anna Maxted's other book to see if its as good! Thanks for reading! :)
