Rating: Summary: Don't bother..... Review: Don't even bother with this one - it's really bad. There are so many other good brit chick books out there - leave this on the shelf!
Rating: Summary: Awful Review: I could only stomach 3 chapters of this waste of type and paper. I have read several books in this "genre" i.e, Bridget Jones, Good in Bed, Jemima Jones...and enjoyed them because I LIKED the main character. They had "heart"...this character has no heart ,is ultra critical of everything and everyone. I really gave it a chance having read so many glowing reviews..., but really. I like fun, but fun is NOT mean.
Rating: Summary: A very real comedy-I Ioved this book! Review: A funny thing happened to Helen on the way to her father's funeral - and this on top of a man who isn't right for her, an unlikely prospective boyfriend, a terrible roommate, a "tequila incident", and a mother who has completely gone over the edge. What Anna Maxted does, is turn this seemingly tragic story into one filled with laughs and a unique perspective. I can't wait for Running in Heels to hit paperback!
Rating: Summary: be inspired Review: brilliantly and articulately written wonderfully expressively and witty with simple use of vacabs and adjectives to deliver beautifully. anna maxted knows what being in love is all about. she knows about love and lust and the formidable combination of both. utterly sexy and sincere anyone who's ever been exploited to life cruelty should read this book. anna maxted totally defeated me.
Rating: Summary: i really liked this book Review: I read this book in two days, and couldn't put it down. If you liked Bridget Jones Diary, this is similar to that book. Being 22, I related to a lot of things that Helen goes through. This is a funny book to read when you are just in the mood for something light-hearted and easy to read. I wish I could find more books like this!
Rating: Summary: I'm well aware that some people think it's been done, but... Review: I have to say that of all of the "single British chick" books I've read, this one takes the cake. I had fun reading Bridget Jones, but Bridget was always too goofily likable. Maxted's character, Helen Bradshaw, is not always so likable -- which is just how it should be. She can be snide and self-pitying and downright mean, which appeals to the memories of bad days we've all had. I found this book to hysterical at times and always engaging. I read it in one day, which is quite a compliment, because I really didn't have the time to do that yesterday!
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I loved this book. It was the type of book where I really cared what happened to the character. I loved the vet too. It left an imprerssion on me and I couldn't put it down. This is the type of book that you can't wait to finish and then when you do, you're sad it's over.
Rating: Summary: loved it.... Review: I loved this book!!! I picked it up to read on a vacation and then I couldn't put it down... It wasn't a "deep" book, by any means, but I laughed and laughed the entire way through it... Helen Bradshaw, the main character, is much like Bridget Jones, but to be honest, I think I liked it even more... So if you don't want to think too much, but would like a good laugh and an entertaining read, don't pass this one up...
Rating: Summary: Getting Over It is hard to get over! Review: An excellent book -- as just as the reviews said it's "laugh out loud funny." I bought the book at an airport bookstore because I had plenty of time before boarding. I found myself bursting into laughter then catching myself thinking, "Ooops!" But soon, forget that! I laughed in the airport lounge, I laughed on the plane and totally perplexed my seatmates. If you're traveling over the holidays, get the book -- it will make those long airport waits fly by. But more than that, there is a real connection -- a Helen in all of us -- growth waiting to happen and a dawning of childhood hurts that we thought didn't need, correcting, but we yearn and learn and ressolve in time.
Rating: Summary: The Worst Book I Have Read in Years Review: "Getting Over It" was the worst book I have read in years. I am at a loss to explain why so many other reviewers praised it. The main character, Helen Bradshaw, is irritating and shallow. She has no redeeming qualities that make her likeable. To illustrate my point, consider how she met her boyfriend, Jasper. He approached her at a party and offered her a cigarette: " 'I don't smoke,' I said primly. In a flash of brilliance, I added coyly, 'I'm a good girl.' He didn't miss a beat. He replied, 'Well, you look filthy.' It was the best compliment I've ever had. What could I do but shag him out of gratitude?" Consider also the scene where Helen sees her father in the hospital and is shocked by how frail and sick he looks: "He looks dreadful. While I am mute with shock -- although I can't help thinking this is a week off work, at least -- my mother is loudly inconsolable." The author, Anna Maxted, is a contributing editor at Cosmopolitan and "Getting Over It" reads like an excerpt from that magazine... a light quick read with little depth or substance. The insights that Maxted offers on death are insipid at best: "My dad is dead. My father is dead. Daddy is dead. But he isn't dead! He wasn't dead. He wasn't dead yesterday, or the day before that. He's been alive ever since I've known him." "And when I look look back on my life's greatest traumas -- recorder lessons, not being allowed to have my ears pierced -- I see that each one has something in common. No matter how life-shattering they felt at the time, there was an end to them. The trouble with death is, there isn't an end to it." Now imagine 400+ pages of that. Lastly, the humor in this book is few and far between. There is nothing amusing about a woman who routinely gets kicked around (figuratively speaking) by the men in her life only to pick herself up, dust herself off, and go straight back to them. Pathetic is the word that comes to my mind. Another reviewer got it right when she said that Helen is "floundering," and it is painful -- not funny -- to read about her dating exploits. Even when Helen ends up with the good guy, Tom, I'm not convinced her happiness will last because she never demonstrates self-respect or inner strength. I am distinctly aware that my opinion about "Getting Over It" is shared by few others. If you decide to read the book, I wish you better luck. For me, I found little about it that was rewarding or entertaining.
