Summary: Thoughtful. . . but
Review: "My Sister's Keeper" does raise questions in my mind, just like the it promises. They may not be the questions the author wanted you to ask.

Anna is a thirteen year old girl who has healthy but has to donate her body to Kate, her sister, who has a rare form of leukemia. Anna was conceived only to help her older sister survive. When she is pushed to far, Anna fights back for the right to make her own choices abour her body.

Her brother, Jesse has also had enough with his parents choices. He chooses to act out by setting fires, which ironically, his father (Brian) has to put out.

Their father, Brian, is pushed into a hard position. He loves his children and his wife, but sometimes his wife seems only to care about one person in the family, Kate. When Anna decides to sue them, he moves out with her and the family unravels more.

Sara, who in my opinion was a selfish women who only cared about Kate, no matter the consequences to her other children, was supposed to be a moving character. I thought she was unbearably horrible. The true question of the book was who would ever allow a women like that to become a parent?

The "twist" int the end felt like the author's attempt to neatly rap up the book and show that Sara really did love Anna. However it fell flat and I was left with a disappointed feeling. The one you get when a book doesn't live up to your expectations.

Summary: Another Picoult Formula Book
Review: Okay Jodi, you're getting dry! I have read all of Picoult's books, most of which have some sort of unique topic, a long lost love reunited, court room drama, various voices, and a twist of an ending. They are fun, fast reads. This one, had a super topic and tons of potential, but lost it on a few points.

1. Too many voices. No, I'm not dumb; I could follow the story. However, while some of the voices used are valid, others feel forced and are hard to really care about. Do we really need seven people telling the story?

2. Flat or unlikeable characters. I really didn't care too much about anyone in this book.

3. Huge stretches! (I'll leave it at that).

4. The worst ending ever! (No spoiler). I usually like her twists. I sort of predicted this one except that it came so late I began to doubt myself. However, it came out of nowhere and was too abrupt. Also, it was too simplistic.

So, in short, Jodi picked a great topic, and it was still interesting; however, she fell short in many areas this time.

Summary: What would you do?
Review: One cannot read this book and not wonder, "What would I do in this situation." And herein lies the book's greatness. Picoult is no stranger to off the beaten path topics (euthanasia, suicide, etc) but what she has created here, with MY SISTER'S KEEPER, is like no other work of hers, for simply by writing such a powerful story, she has allowed us to put ourselves in her place; to think about what we might do when dealing with illness. Do you shape the family and your life around this sickness, or do you try and control the direction your life, as well as the family member who is ill, will take? None of this is easy stuff, nor should it be. A word of warning: Don't read this book at night--you simply won't be able to get to sleep--there's just too much here in this jam packed page turner. And I don't mean page turner in the DA VINCI CODE or BARK OF THE DOGWOOD sense. No, this is a psychologically complex book that will cause you to think, probably more than you'd like to. It's my contention that when you look up "Food for Thought" in the dictionary, you'll see "See MY SISTER'S KEEPER." It's just that good.

Summary: A page turner and a good read
Review: Took this book out the library yesterday and 1pm, finished it this morning at 10am. Even though this is a "typical" Jodi Picoult book in formula - court scenes and surprise ending, I just love the stories this woman weaves and the insights she has. The subject is close to my own heart, having a child with a fatal disease, and I was brought to tears many times throughout the story (have the tissues ready for the end of the book). I would recommend it, especially if you enjoyed Picoult's other books.

Summary: Picoult at her best
Review: My Sister's Keeper is a sensitive and thought-provoking portrayal of a family deep in crisis.

Anna Fitzgerald is an adolescent who was conceived for the purpose of being an organ donor for her sister, Kate, who has a rare form of leukemia. The story begins with Anna deciding that enough is enough, and seeking legal action to put a stop to it. Both Kate's illness and Anna's actions impact each member of the family--as well as her attorney and her guardian ad litem--in a unique and profound way.

My Sister's Keeper pulled me in from the first page and held on straight through to the explosive twist at its conclusion, which has become Picoult's signature. Told in alternating chapters from the perspectives of several of the characters involved, this is a sensitive, deeply moving and thought-provoking story that left me pondering my true moral and ethical beliefs.

Highly recommended, My Sister's Keeper is an excellent choice for book discussion groups.

Summary: Be Warned, Grab the Tissues
Review: Jodi Picoult has written a heartwrenching story of a family's struggle to deal with the illness of one of their own. We get an intimate view of just how devastated a family can be by such a terrible disease. Sixteen year old Kate has leukemia and her younger sister, Anna, who was basically created to be a donor for her sister, has reached the tender age of 13 and is sick of feeling like she may as well be sick herself given all the time she is spending in the hospital donating parts of her body to Kate. Enter Jesse, the angry older brother who is dealing with the hurt he feels inside by "acting out" as a juvenile delinquent. We feel such sympathy for Sara and Brian as they try to hold onto their sick daughter with such fierce devotion, possibly, to the detriment of their other children.

Ms. Picoult does a wonderful job bringing the reader into the heart of this struggling family. I felt such empathy for all of them and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I recommend it highly.

Summary: Amazing
Review: Hillary, Reader

This story though told as a fiction, truly is the thoughts and feelings of the unknown child out there that is living through this same ordeal. the parents dont mean to cause such pressure on their child, but they want desperately to save the other-making them narrow minded in their venture. This book borderlines on what a child can go though, and yes, it is a type of child abuse. This is a fantastically written book, that captures your attention and holds it. It should be ranked up there with books such as Nightmares Echo, A Child Called It,Lost Boy and Running With Scissors. Each are courageous and deep books about life of children-and the years through teen to adult.

Summary: A must read.
Review: Once you start reading this book, it is very difficult to put down. I read hundreds of books each year and this is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review. Keep Kleenex handy.
