Rating: Summary: Excellent!! Review: There's only one word to describe this book. EXCELLENT! I had never heard of Jodi Picoult before three weeks ago when we walked into Barnes and Noble and 50 copies of this book stared me in the face. She has been elevated to my favorite author (I have since read her book 'Plain Truth').'My Sister's Keeper' is thought-provoking, and Ms. Picoult has a gift for weaving a scene in which you feel you are right there. I love the way she oscillates from first to third-person story telling and also the way she tells this story from every main charater's perspective. The end was so surprising. I sobbed. Thanks, Jodi, for a great read and for highlighting the struggle that many families face when dealing with a sick family member.
Rating: Summary: Great author, wonderful book! Excellent Bookclub choice Review: Several years ago on vacation in NH, I found two relatively unknown local authors, Jodi Picoult and Dan Brown (DaVinci Code), who have been my favorites ever since. Hard to pick a favorite of Ms.Picoult's books, but this could be it. Reading the jacket made me a little weary with the heavy story line, but you will not be able to put this book down. We've heard of parents having children to help save their other children and never thought twice about it - I think most of us would do the same thing. Well, this book is extremely thought provoking. It is told from many people's points of view, primarily 13 yr. old Anna's and her Mom's. What this family, and all of the families dealing with children with cancer, go through is absolutely heart wrenching. I loved the characters and the plot twists - just sorry it had to end. This would make a suberb bookclub pick - especially for good for Mothers to discuss. Great read!
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING READ Review: I loved this book. I have ready many of Ms. Picoult's books and I am a fan, but I go into each book with an open mind. She never disappoints and this is no exception. Surprise ending. I really don't like flashback/flash-sideways/flash-forward books at all, but I was able to get past it because of the excellent content.
Rating: Summary: Gritty and soulful Review: Makes you think, makes you cry. But not in a bad way. Loved the book, loved all the characters, great writing. Other books like this: Durable Goods, Show Me the Way, An Egg on Three Sticks, A Girl in Parts.
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking, fabulous and an unforgettable read. Review: As a parent you wonder how far you would go to save your child, and at what cost to other family members. I would give up my life for my child, but would I give up another one of my children to save one? This is the choice Sara had to make to continually go from one health emergency to another with her daughter Kate. During Kates life threateneing moments, it was Anna, her sister conceived just to give Kate the cells that she needed to survive must also go through evasive medical procedures. How far do you go as a parent, to save a child? Jodi Picould wties a page turner filled with the unexpected in exploring this issue. When is enough - enough. Who can say stop taking from one child and let the other child go. A topic that will have a defferent opinion from anyone who has read this compelling book. Each chapter is another character talking about their perspective and how the decisions that will be made, will effect them. Don't miss this book - and don't read the last 20 pages in a public place, it will take your breath away.
Rating: Summary: What About Anna Review: I cried at the ending of the book, but more out of rage for Anna than anything else. I was deeply disapointed. I believed in her and saw her a something other than a donor for Kate. Which is more than can be said for Sara. I felt nothing for her. Anna got cheated majorly she only had one purpose in life. I don't think that what they asked her was ethical, organ donation at that young age would impact her life forever. No one thought about that. I don't feel that Sara really saw Anna until the lawsuit. The ending had me wanting to throw the book across the room. I cried for Anna because she's the one who suffered in the end. I guess the end makes sense, Sara got her way and Kate lived, Anna was just the means to end.
Rating: Summary: Jodi Picoult does it again!!!!! Review: I absolutely could not put this book down. This a story so compelling, about the love between family and the dynamics involved. I have read everything this author has written. I loved Perfect Match and My Sisters Keeper is in that same realm of reading. Ms. Picoult can bring you right into the soul and heart of how an individual feels, you are drawn to these characters. As always, the ending holds a punch I didn't see coming. I highly recommend this book!!!
Rating: Summary: Wow. Review: A fantastic read and a great book. I definitely recommend this book to anybody. It has a very surprising ending. Great, great book.
Rating: Summary: Being a parent Review: As a parent and a nurse, I found this novel explored not only the unique relationships that occur in a family, but just how far a parent will go when a child is suffering from a potentially lethal illness. What is the right answer to a sibling being a donor for a sibling with cancer? How do you deny treatment of one child to spare another? This novel is one of the top stories I have read in my years as an avid reader. I can't wait to read more from Ms. Picoult. I also attended a reading and discussion by her and found her down to earth and a working mom, just like most of us. I highly recomend this book with a box of tissues!
Rating: Summary: Once again, Picoult writes compellingly! Review: This time, it has the different characters taking turns talking in this book ~~ instead of just one or two main characters. This time, Picoult takes you into the deepest parts of your souls and minds ~~ makes you search for the truth that lies within. She doesn't make it easy either. You may be the reader, but she is taking you on a journey that has happened to other people ~~ and makes you question, what would I do in this situation? Anna was born to be her sister's perfect donor match. Kate has one of the worst forms of leukemia which often is fatal to its victims before the age of five. The issue starts with Anna when she is thirteen and asks to be legally free not to give up any more of her platelets, organs or marrow for her sister. This is how the story begins, with Anna. There is Sara and Brian, her parents who have been caught in this medical nightmare for years. There is Jesse, the girls' older brother who has been shoved aside because of Kate's illness. This is a fight for Kate's cure ~~ at the cost of severing family relationships. There is Campbell, the attorney who decided to take on Anna's case and Julia, a former love interest who is also appointed by the court to be Anna's guardian. Their voices entwined and weave a compelling story that keeps the reader hooked from the first page. It makes the reader question ~~ what would I do in Sara's shoes or Anna's shoes? Or what if ... it's a soul-searching novel. You cannot read this and walk away unscathed. It's impossible to read any of Picoult's books without stopping to think of what could be. If you're looking for a light read, then do not read this book. In some ways, this is Picoult's darkest novel and in other ways, it is her most redeeming novel. She brings the truth out of the dark places and makes you face it. Then sometimes, there is redemption when you least expect it. This is perhaps her finest novel. If you're a Picoult fan, don't be shy in getting this one. 5-14-04
