Summary: good for the kids, but adults, read something more serious
Review: a superficial introduction to the world of western philosophy. covers it all, but in the end is not really interesting. this is great, however, for teenagers.

Rating: 5 stars

Summary: Stretches your mind and expands your horizons
Review: this book truly makes you stop and think about the world and your place in it. You may not remember the dates and exact people he talks about, but you will come away with more questions and ideas than before.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A novel that makes you think of your position in infinity.
Review: "Sophie's World" is an excellent novel, one that brilliantly weaves the history of philosophy with an intriguing tale of one young girl's adventures. The work really makes the reader consider his or her position in this world and infinity. While raising typical philosophical questions, "Sophie's World" also brings up issues of which everyday individuals normally do not think. For example, do we really exist? Or, are we just characters in someone's story? "Sophie's World" is a must read, and it must be read more than once.

Summary: One of the best books I have ever read!
Review: I love a book that really challenges you to think about our world. This book is just such a book. Weaving in a beautiful and mysterious plot (suiting the theme of philosophy well) Jostein Gaarder takes us on a journey- through a fairly complete history of philosophy. READ THIS BOOK

Summary: This novel opened my mind to a whole new way of thinking.
Review: I started to read Sophie's World, and i just couldn't put it down. It was a wonderful novel, and I would reccomend it to anyone, as long as they don't mind a long read. I thought that Jostein Gaarder couldn't have done a better job.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: worth reading, but less than original
Review: A Cliff's Notes for Western thought hidden behind the plot from a Jorge Luis Borges short story. For a more thought-provoking story, in 500 fewer pages, check out Borges' Las Ruinas Circulares.

Summary: Get out from the rabbit's fur!
Review: I think his story is like a puzzle. Jostein Gaarder is not only a philosopher but also a wonderful story teller. This book is the best for the first step to philosophy. Everyone who reads this book will be made to realize they have been in the rabbit's fur.We can travel in the history of philosophy at ease with Sophie,a curious girl. Let's read and get out from the rabbit's fur!

Summary: Gaardner is a genius!
Review: HAVE YOU EVER PEELED AN ARTICHOKE, HUNGRY AND CURIOUS TO FIND THE HEART INSIDE? READING SOPHIE'S WORLD IS QUITE SIMILAR... I HATED THE DRY READING OF PHILOSOPHY UNTIL GAARDNER PRESENTED IT IN A NEW LIGHT. THE INGENUITY OF THIS BOOK COMES FROM THE FACT THAT THERE IS AN UNDERLYING MYSTERY PLOT IN ADDITION TO SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE YOU GET TO ACQUIRE! SOMEHOW THIS NOVEL IS BRILLIANT IN THAT THE STORY WITHIN A STORY MAY HINT AWAY ON GAARDNER'S VIEW ON GOD AND HIS (OR HER?!) ROLE IN THE UNIVERSE. SIMILARLY, GAARDNER HAS NEARLY TAKEN ON GOD'S ROLE, BY WRITING A PLOT WHERE CHARACTERS AND READERS MUST FIGURE OUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT.

THE MAGIC HERE IS FOUND LAYER UPON LAYER, ONE OF THE AMAZING WORLD OUT THERE AND ANOTHER OF THE INTENSITY AND CURIOSITY OF A YOUNG GIRL...

GAARDNER, GET OUT THERE AND WRITE SOME MORE! WE LOVE YOU!

Summary: Five Stars masquerading as a Two Star.
Review: If you read "Sophie's World" and all you "get" from it is the feeling that you've been tricked into reading a philosophy text, it's still worth the 513 page trip. But if you want to turn this trick into something magical, give a copy of this book to your child or younger sibling and get ready for hours of invigorating discussion, questions and an opportunity to gain a respect for each other's intellect that is usually very hard to find in today's "T.V. Culture." The lessons taught in the book come in small easy to digest morsels that launch children and teens into exploration of a world they might previously used little or, perhaps, had no idea existed at all, their minds. The ending is an almost predictable "Deus ex Machina" but the payoff is not the ending of the book but the beginning of "uncountable" mental "Philosophical Flights" to come.
