Rating: Summary: Picoult's The Pact Review: Excellent look at the torment of two families and their children, when things turn out to not be as perfect as they seemed on the outside
Rating: Summary: Enthralling Review: This is a book that stays with you after you finish, and you're sad when it's over. The characters become very real -- so much so that you'll wish you could help them to feel better. Having said that, it's a good length, you can finish it without losing a week of your life.
Rating: Summary: incredible! Review: This was my first Jodi Picoult novel - where have I been hiding! Amazing story of two families that grow up together, the mothers are best friends, and all are ecstatic when their children, Chris and Emily change from friends to lovers. Everything looks perfect. Then the dreaded phone call comes in the middle of the night, Emily is dead and Chris is injured, then charged with her murder. Everything falls apart as blame, guilt and pain blow them all to pieces. I could understand all the parent's different reactions, infact I don't think that I have cried from so many different perspectives described in a book before! The flashbacks were well spaced through the book and you couldn't help but care for the characters portrayed. I am anxious to read more from this impressive author.
Rating: Summary: The Pact Review: I was going to visit my sister for a long weekend and went to the bookstore to get something to read on the trip. My criteria was that it couldn't be an Oprah book. (nothing against Oprah but I thought I needed to find one on my own) What a WONDERFUL book I found. I was not able to put the book down. Although I did not feel like the characters became a part of me, I was able to see myself in their posisitons and was very sympathetic (I could count on one hand how many times I have cried while reading books and this book brought tears to my eyes). And it left me with the question...what would I do in their situation? I think that if that kind of question is being asked then it is a great book. It is a great summertime book!
Rating: Summary: The Pact Review: I read this book in 2 days and I must say, I was sad to be finished with it. It wasn't so much the plot or circumstance that was so riveting. It was the characters. I felt so close to them, I found myself thinking about Chris and Emily when I was driving. It sounds kind of silly but now that I am finished with the book, I miss them! I hope I feel this close to the characters in the next book that I read.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Experience Review: What an awesome experience I became part of when I decided to read this book. Over the course of a week, I became Jodi Picoult's biggest fan. This a WONDERFUL book.
Rating: Summary: A good easy read Review: I read this book in about two days. I found myself staying up as late as I could to finish it. It was a nice, easy read. I look forward to reading more from Picoult.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: I saw a review of Jodi Picoult's latest book, Plain Truth, in People Magazine and while waiting for Plain Truth to come out in paperback, picked up The Pact. WOW! What an incredicle book! I couldn't put it down. Picoult has a wonderful talent for making the characters become very real and very alive. I found myself thinking about the characters at work and having to remind myself that they weren't real! I really felt like i got to know Emily and Chris. I cried with Emily and grieved with Chris. It was such an incredible story!
Rating: Summary: A book that wouldn't go away Review: This is THE best book I have ever read! I have never felt in the skin of charactors like I was in this book. There are scenes in this book that come back days, weeks and even months after I read this book. There are so many layers in this book. So many questions to ponder so many what if's--just like real life. Jodi Picoult is one of the best writers out there today and she deserves to be read.
Rating: Summary: Don't buy the hype! Review: Shallow shallow shallow! This is the kind of book that seems to have been written with either the movie deal or Oprah's book club in mind. The NY Times review is right: the characters are one-dimensional, the plot predictable. If you have ever read one legal thriller, or have even a high school education, you can easily figure out what "plot twist" or "emotional turmoil" will come next. What's worse, the paperback version of the book comes with discussion points, as if the themes of incest, social class, career, and showing of emotions were not obvious enough. This book is truly an example of the dumbing down of America.
