Rating: Summary: Author Ann B. Ross must have followed me around since 1950. Review: I cannot BELIEVE that Ann B. Ross could write MY story without knowing me! She has not left out ONE event in my marriage! Sometimes life for me was not funny at all, but I laughed all the way through "Miss Julia." Every woman who would like to emerge from her "protected state" should read this book! A great big "thank you" should go to Ann B. Ross. I read the Readers Digest Condensed version; now I'm ordering the book!
Rating: Summary: Completely Entertaining Review: I usually read an entirely different type of book (psychological or medical thrillers). On the recommendation of a good friend, I picked up "Miss Julia", and found myself slipping deep into her life-adventures. A word of warning for all unsuspecting readers...don't read this in bed at night when your husband is sleeping. You'll break out in spontaneous hoots, howls, and laughter that you can never begin to explain to your baffled and sleepy mate! The scene in the church with the "doctor" had me gasping for air, I was laughing so hard. And the "rescue of Little Lloyd" invoked a mental movie that could not begin to be played out on the big screen! This book was a real treat!
Rating: Summary: Most engaging read in a long, long time. Review: My only regret is that I read it in the Reader's Digest Condensed Books. I would have liked to have read every juicy word Ms. Ross pens instead of the bite-sized version. Shoot! I'm eager to read other Ross books. Don't miss this one. Brilliant story of widow "coming of age." A hoot!
Rating: Summary: Great to see Miss Julia emerge into her own self. Review: I have been thrilled to read this funny, heart warming book. I see so many "new" widows in Julia eager to break out of a shell to be themselves. This applies primarily to older women who were brides of the 50's when the husband played the role of "head of the housewhole". Fortunately, not I. Read her other books, please.
Rating: Summary: It was a rollicking ride with a woman coming of age at 68. Review: Miss Julia is a wonderful character who will make you laugh and cry with all the predicaments she finds herself in after the death of her husband. For a woman who was never allowed to make decisions or express her opinion Miss Julia makes some life changing decisions and some major errors in judgement which she manages to recover from just in the nick of time.
Rating: Summary: A joy to read, it makes you laugh out loud Review: Ann B. Ross I'm trying to find your book,"The Pilgimage" Is it in print, sure hope so. '
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable read with real moral dilemmas.. Review: The characters are real and funny. the story offers insights into one generation's hypocrisy which is a great play off the current rash of self-indulgent characters.
Rating: Summary: Comedy deals with serious women's themes Review: Miss Julia will captivate you because she is funny, wise and getting wiser, and because she is representative of many women, Southern as well as Northern, Eastern, and Western. She finds herself alone, faced with problems, and, with the help of two female friends (and two male ones) struggles through to become stronger and surer of her own selfworth. Out of this matrix of problems and loves of various kinds, Miss Julia can speak because she can grow and learn. All who have womens' interests at heart will want to read this book. And it could be the funniest serious read you will find this year.
Rating: Summary: Southern Humor shines in Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind Review: Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind represents the best of Southern humor--it's quirky, candid and offers keen observations on the social rules that govern life in a small town. While some have likened it to Jan Karon's Mitford books, I find it closer in tone to Michael Malone's Handling Sin or John Kennedy Toole's Confederacy of Dunces. Miss Julia has much more pepper than any of the Mitford residents I've come across, and her unveiling of hypocrisy spares no-one. Still, the novel is good-natured at its heart and the narrator's warmth and vitatility are what ultimately triumph. For a fast-paced, hilarious and thoroughly fun summer read, this is the book to pick.
Rating: Summary: Miss Julia is a true Southern Iron Lady. A great read! Review: Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind is an interesting foray into small town southern life with a title character who epitomizes the Southern Iron Lady. Even if you're not from the South you will enjoy Miss Julia's wit, wisdom and intestinal fortitude. Also enjoyable is the relationship between three very different southern women that takes the story of Miss Julia and her adventures beyond the simply funny.
