Rating: Summary: Disappointing...to say the least Review: This book was definitely NOT enjoyable to me but rather frustrating. Miss Julia is a naive and annoying character. The plot lines and scenarios throughout the novel are cheesy and asinine. The ending especially. I had expected something more true to the human character. The characters are overdone in an attempt at humor but produce instead a ridiculous and predictably boring novel. If you are looking for the genius of Flagg or the flowing words of West...keep looking. However, I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for a simple read to pass the time and nothing more.
Rating: Summary: What are people waiting for? Review: I saw this book recommended on one of Amazon's reading lists. I picked it up at the library and fell in love. I am the first one to read this book since its' purchase in July 1999. Why? The character of Miss Julia is at once fractured, flawed, iron-willed and rigid. I love her, quirks and all. She, as so many women, was clueless to the true nature of her deceased husband's weaknesses. Bravo for her resolve to deal with the unfortunate consequences of his indescretions. What are people waiting on, grab this book, bite in and ENJOY!
Rating: Summary: ENTERTAINING READ Review: A most enchanting, light, humorous, and enjoyable read, this book can be consumed in one sitting. The plot is simple, but fun; the characters eccentric, but believable; the writing mild and light. If you want pure entertainment without profound truths, or astounding revelations, chose "Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind." Treat yourself; you deserve it!!!!
Rating: Summary: Speaking Up and Speaking Out Review: Miss Julia is a fast and friendly story. The book reads like an all-inclusive diary and plays out like a small town Southern farce. Miss Julia has firm notions of how she should believe and behave but, she tells us sometimes with misgivings, what her realities are. She is recently widowed, or perhaps liberated, from the imposing and wealthy Wesley Lloyd who directed her every move during his lifetime. She tentatively is spreading her wings and savoring the first taste of freedom she has ever had. Then she is presented with Wesley Lloyd's mistress and 9-year old son. That Wesley Lloyd, a pillar of the church and the community, would take up with a woman who "wears her skirts too short and her heels too high" is a stunning revelation. To drive home the truth of Wesley Lloyd's secret life is the fact that Little Lloyd is the spitting image of his daddy, not entirely a good thing. As Miss Julia points out, Wesley Lloyd was not a handsome man. "Miss Julia" has a strong flavor of "Driving Miss Daisy" with the wise and loyal servant and the impressive house and standards to keep up. But Julia is not as rock-ribbed certain as Miss Daisy, and is all too willing to ask for advice that she rarely takes. Sometimes Miss Julia's wide-eyed innocence is overdone, but easily forgiven. This is a feel-good book, excellent for a relaxing read. It doesn't ask a great deal of you, but gives much back in return.
Rating: Summary: What a delightful read Review: I was browsing the bookstore one day and wasn't sure what I was looking for when I came across this book. I wanted somemthing different. I saw Fannie Flagg endorsing the book and that sold me. I loved Fried Green Tomatoes. This book is such a comfortable, delightful, easy reading and I enjoyed it so much. I travel a lot and this book made the time pass by in such a heartwarming way. The book is a nice departure from life's daily annoyances. I recommend this book very highly.
Rating: Summary: I Just Loved This Book Review: Miss Julia should be everyone's favourite aunt or grandmother. She is an absolute hoot who gets her revenge on her skin-flint husband after years of his domination. I'm not saying that this is the greatest piece of literature ever written, but I so enjoyed this story and all the characters in it, that I just wish that there were more Ann B. Ross books available for me to turn to next. Here's to you, Miss Julia!
Rating: Summary: Truly fun to read, Miss Julia is wonderful and cantankerous Review: I just finished this one and it was an absolute delight from start to finish. If you like Southern novels, you won't want to miss this one. Miss Julia absolutely seemed real, quirky, obstinate but also...at the beginning of the novel, at least... more than a bit naive. Married to a "pillar" of the community, a man with an impeccable reputation, Miss Julia has lived quite a contented, if somewhat restricted life, enjoying the luster of her husband's reputation and place in the community. This life came with a cost, however, as her husband controlled nearly every aspect of their life. When he suddenly dies, she is looking forward to some freedom, when she suddenly is faced with a major crisis. It seems that the man she thought she knew so well had a secret life and a child with another woman. Even worse, the child is deposited on her doorstep by his destitute mother, leaving Miss Juila not only in shock but with a nine year old child to deal with. From this beginning, the writer creates a funny, heartwarming and very engaging story of a woman who has to deal with the unexpected and with advice from her "friends" and even her minister (who is more than a bit self-interested) about how to handle her finances and her life. But what is most appealing about this book (besides the wonderful character, Miss Julia) is the very unique voice and writing style of the author.
Rating: Summary: I loved Miss Julia!! Review: This book was absolutely one of the best I've read in far too long. It was sweet and serious and funny and it went by far too quickly. If you're from a small town, or even if you've ever visited, you'll recognize all these wonderful characters -- Julia, Pastor Ledbetter, Binkie, Sam, Junior (Little Lloyd) and so on. This book was a true escape and it's now making the rounds while all my friends share.
Rating: Summary: Very amusing Review: This book has some great characters and I missed them when I was finished. You just want to keep on reading on what Miss Julia is up to now. There are some points in the book where I found it difficult to believe Miss Julia's naiveté but I got over it. This was a warm-hearted novel about a woman who is finding herself after being constrained by others' values for all her life.
Rating: Summary: Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind Review: Are you tired of depressing novels? Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind leaves you feeling light and uplifted. What a lovely and enjoyable book this is. I want all my friends to read this book so we can talk about it. I had FUN with this book. It must be made into a movie! I think Debbie Reynolds would be great as Miss Julia. The naivete of Miss Julia is refreshing and hilarious. After the last page, I sat there and laughed out loud. I can't wait to read the next one.
