Rating: Summary: A laugh-out-loud book Review: This book made me laugh so hard while reading it on a plane, I know people thought I was crazy. This is book is funny, but it's also very poignant. It's about discovering who you are and loving every minute of it. Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind will make you laugh out loud, cry, cheer and read ever so slowly so the book will never end. I am waiting anxiously for Ann B. Ross's new book about Miss Julia due in July.
Rating: Summary: Perfect writing, wonderful characters, heartwarming Review: I'm so pleased that my book group picked this book. I absolutely loved it. I think it is the best book I have read in years and I am a voracious reader. Fannie Flagg wrote endorsed this book, and that is fitting because the style is much like Fannie's, only I think Ms. Ross, does Ms. Flagg better. I am eagarly awaiting the next book Ms. Ross writes.
Rating: Summary: Delightful and charming Review: Miss Julia's husband has died. Unfortunately he has also left behind an illegitimate son Miss Julia knew nothing about. When the child's mother leaves her son on Miss Julia's doorstep, she has to learn to speak her mind and do the right thing, no matter how difficult. In true Southern style there are preachers, deputies, nosy neighbors and unscrupulous characters galore. I laughed out loud more than once. I would love to know Miss Julia, and her decidedly unconventional family.
Rating: Summary: I laughed, and laughed , and laughed Review: What a treat! Miss Julia will stay with you forever - a character so richly drawn, so fully developed, that she could jump off the pages and have a conversation with you. Seldom has a book so tickled me that I would go out and buy it for my friends, but this is the exception. If I could give it six stars, I would!
Rating: Summary: Cheap Imitation Review: This book seems unclear whether it is being written in the past or the present. Miss Julia and her acquaintances still wear hats to church in the middle of summer, and have hired help to come in on a daily basis to cook and clean. It's hard to feel sorry for or sympathize with Miss Julia. She is bent on only looking out for herself. She shows no compassion for the poor child that has been thrust on her; she only wishes to put the best face on things to preserve her standing in town.Miss Julia seems to have no friends in this book other than her hired help. It's no wonder, as she has no qualities which would make her suitable for friendship. She thinks and speaks in trite phrases. The plot is contrived and hard to swallow. For those who have read books in the Mitford series, you will find this a shallow imitation, lacking all the charm of Karon's characters.
Rating: Summary: Miss Julia's speaking my language! Review: Oh, you've just got to read this book! Miss Julia will inspire you. She is a firecracker, full of spunk, and witty to boot. You feel sorry for her for the life she led as wife (or second-class citizen--same thing in her eyes), but root for her for the life she now leads as widow and step-momma. And she definitely speaks her mind, which makes this novel so wonderful and fun to read. The language is so vivid and fresh, the cast of characters are as loopy as all get out, and even Miss Julia shows a bit of naivete at times. An absolute winner for southern fiction fans. Just wish I knew more people like Miss Julia.
Rating: Summary: Read it three times. Review: I read the book and absolutely loved it. I smiled all the way through it. It has delightful irony, gentle sarcasm, pokes careful fun at the established Christian church. I read it and promptly read it again. A month later I picked it up and read it for the third time. I very rarely read a book more than once. Absolutely delightful!
Rating: Summary: Crazy Characters; fast paced and hilarious.... Review: The book reviews (following) are right on the mark. This is one of the most original stories I've read. My favorite authors, Janet Evanovich, Jan Karon and M.C.Beaton would love the style and story-line too. I hope there's a sequel.
Rating: Summary: CHARMING AND HILARIOUS Review: This story opens approximately 2 months after Ms. Julia, now a wealthy widow, has buried her beloved husband of 44 years. He dies of a heart attack in the driveway of their home. Upon his death, she learns many things, the least of which is that the god fearing, self righteous, judgemental husband had a long standing relationship with a woman from "the other side of the tracks" and fathered a son. Of course, since the wife is always the last to know, she finds this out when Hazel Marie, too blond, too wrinkled, too much make up, dress too short and heels too high shows up at her doorstep to deliver the son for safekeeping. After all, the mother, Hazel Marie was not provided for by her son's father but has just been accepted to beauty school and must learn how to frost, tip and glue. This book revolves around what happes when Ms. Julia, this pillar of the community, honest church going woman who is respected by all in her town must deal with the illegitimate son of her deceased husband. This book is absolutely hilarious. Ms. Julia definitely does speak her mind to whomever and on whatever topic. Her cast of characters are just as humorous and delightful as Ms. Julia. This is a truly delightful novel and great fun.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Deliteful Review: The funniest, most suspenseful, and most origional book I've read in a long time. Ms. Ross writes beautiful dialog and dialect. Anything else I'd say would be redundent ... how many ways can I say great fun! Thank you so much, M'am! Can't wait for the next one!
