Summary: A Precious, Hilarious Book!
Review: If you want a quick respite from the stress and drudgeries of everyday life, read this adorable story immediately! I promise, you will laugh until you cry. I have heard that this is being made into a movie and I CAN'T WAIT!

Summary: You Never Know
Review: I grew up in a small southern town, but have lived in California for many years. For me, this book evoked the best and the worst of my heritage and did it with wit, style, respect and grace. The characters are fully drawn and more realistic than many might imagine. While the story could easily have lapsed into slapstick, the author manages to avoid crossing the line. If you are looking for a book that will engage you with both the plot and the people who carry the story, and will make you laugh, try this one. If you are a transplanted southernern who appreciates some aspects of the south and is glad to be rid of some others, try this one.

Summary: Take a delightful romp through Abbotsville!
Review: Delightful is the only word I can think of to sum up this novel! With newfound freedom, finances and family, the recently widowed Miss Julia takes on adventures of all kinds. The characters are lively and interesting, to say the least, and the reader is taken along for the ride as one unbelieveable event after another unfolds. It's great fun to watch Miss Julia go from 1950s housewife to proud single woman. During the first few chapters, I was starting to wonder if I had somehow mistakenly picked up some kind of lovelace pulp, but I'm glad to have stuck it out until the last scene unfolded! This book would be an excellent choice for airport or car reading.

Summary: Terrific story
Review: One of the reviews on the cover says, "...it is impossible not to like this book" and they are right - its funny, fun, reminds you of a person, or a place, or a time that you found enjoyable - truly liked the story.

Summary: Light , Heartwarming... and did I mention scrappy, also?
Review: Miss Julia makes for a light read that goes quickly and still keeps the reader on the edge of what is next to occur. She silently (and not so... sometimes) speaks her mind with the courage and conviction many of us wished we had and it gets her into deep doo-doo. However, what redeems Miss Julia is the fact that she acknowledges her shortcomings, albeit, very reluctantly. If you like Jan Karon's Mitford Series, you will enjoy Miss Julia, except she is a little scrappier than those in pristine Mitford. Enjoy!!!

Summary: A Charming and Funny Read!
Review: This book was such a wonderful read! As the other reviewers have stated Miss Julia's situation, this leads to a changing life for her and how she deals with it all, in the old Southern way, is funny and entertaining. I am currently reading Miss Julia Speaks Out and can't wait for the release of Miss Julia Plans a Wedding. Recommending this book to friends, comes all too easy.

Summary: The liberation of a Southern lady and the bedlam that ensues
Review: From the moment you hear Miss Julia begin to speak (the book is written in first person), you feel yourself begin to route for her and feel pride in a justice served.

Miss Julia has been under the heel of someone since her life began. Transferring from her father's authority directly to that of her husband's. Having never had or said anything or her own in her life, she finds herself suddenly liberated upon the unexpected death of her husband. But with freedom comes a price as the illegitimate son of her deceased husband appears on her doorstep.

I found myself routing for Miss Julia as she must hold her head above the disapproval of the community while fending off those who would seek to help her bear the "burden" of her husband's wealth.

This book does not disappoint as the good are rewarded and justice is served in the end.

Summary: Funny but poignant
Review: Evidently I've been reading too many depressing and serious novels....Miss Julia was just what I needed! I didn't think I would enjoy it so much but I LOVED it. It wasn't the actual plot that got me but the characterization. As a woman living in the South, I found Miss Julia TOTALLY believeable! I laughed out loud and smiled throughout the book....however....I sensed an "ache" also....it was very touching....the "late blooming" so-to-speak of Miss Julia.Yes, she becomes very strong after her husband dies, but there is still a fragility lingering there. Under that crusty and sometimes prideful persona is a warm and generous heart. Also....I had the good fortune to hear Ann Ross speak and she is WONDERFUL.I know...she SWEARS she is NOT Miss Julia...but if you ever get the chance to meet her...go for it!

Summary: Elegantly captures the contradictions inherent to the South.
Review: Wesley Lloyd Springer, Miss Julia's recently deceased husband, is the perfect caricature of the Baronic Southern Power Player. Constantly reminding his wife of the importance of family, church and one's standing in the community as the pillars of a civilized society and her particular duties and responsibilities in those regards, he's out exercising his clout and power by intimidating everybody in town from his perch as owner of the local bank and carrying on illicit affairs.

Not long after Wesley Lloyd's death, the fruit of one such affair appears on Miss Julia's doorstep in the shape of a very small and scared little boy--Lloyds son--and this sets in motion a wild series of events that set the town--and Miss Julia's life-- on it's ear.

You'll love this book for it's genuine, authentic Southern voice and cadence. Some elements of the story are pretty far fetched, and the portrait of Miss Julia presents a tale of blissful ignorance that stretches credulity a bit too far (especially vis-à-vis her pastor) but those are minor quibbles. The overall story line and reading experience are so delightful and the characters so engaging these minor flaws amount to little more than a bump in the road on an otherwise wonderful journey.
