Rating: Summary: Unputdownable Review: The time spent on reading this book, is regarded as my best spent time ever. I even enjoyed it more than I do making money! The man's literary genius is such that one could almost smell the pot of frogs boiling, or taste the pomegranate delicacies served by the supposed barbarians. The broadening of one's horizons is immeasurable. Invariably, conversations lead to this or that which I have read in THE BOOK, to such an extent that my first copy has been read to pieces by now. I myself have read it six times. Top Honours to Mr Jennings. If Your ability to spellbind could be bottled and sold, you would put Bill Gates to shame!
Rating: Summary: A good but long story Review: For those who like history novels this is a good book, I am one of those. All descriptions for strange places like Kitay, India, Persia among others were made by a brilliant mind. It walks you through those places describing the costums, religions and views in a way you can not stop reading. Contrary to my previous opinion, Marco Polo seems to be an ordinary guy with luck. One critic I can make is that the story is too long and there are some pages that do not give value to the book. I would like to recommend you the history novels written by Taylor Caldwell or Leon Uris.
Rating: Summary: Greater than the sum of its parts Review: No other book in my collection has ever produced such an imaginative account of another time and place, with the possible exception of "The Lord of the Rings." Marking the other half of Marco Polo's account of his travels (the parts that he could not disclose, due to the sensitivities of his time), this work of fiction is well-researched, imaginative, and risque. It reads like an adventure full of intrigue and mystery, a historical epic covering a major portion of the "known world," and a manuel for the senses. "The Journeyer" is many things, though its result is a book definitely worth reading.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've read. The very best of Jennings Review: I've read most of Jennings' work and this is by far my favorite. Jennings leaves nothing to the imagination in any of his novels and certainly this novel is no different. This book leaves a lasting impression on the reader that will linger for years after reading. A masterpiece indeed.
Rating: Summary: One in a zillion Review: I have read countless books and am often asked what is my favorite. Number one is Journeyer and number two is Aztec. It is amazing to me with all the trash on the paperback market that the Journeyer is no longer in paperback print...what's that about? I have one very worn copy that is held together with tape because I have read it many times. So why is it out of paperback print? I mean look at the reviews here and the number of people who say its the best book they've ever read. Come on publisher...print the darn thing and quit wasting paper on the dribble that fills every bookstore in the country but can't hold a candle to the Journeyer. If Journeyer got just a smidgen of promotional $ behind it there is no reason that it wouldn't make the NY Times Bestsellers List. Jennings must be frustrated to have written a masterpiece and the only way anyone can buy it is to plunk down enough money for a hardback.
Rating: Summary: As good as Aztec, better than anything else. Review: This is another one of Jennings best. The only people who would disagree are those easily offended by sex, or violence, of which there is plenty in The Journeyer. And no one really cares what they think anyway. This novel can only be compared to other works by Jennings; all other novels pale in comparison to this great tale of epic adventure.
Rating: Summary: A Cracking Read Review: If you enjoy a great read, spiced with wit and want to learn the easy way about one of histories great travellers while having a little fun along the way......there is no better book
Rating: Summary: Not nearly as good as Aztec Review: Hate to spoil the We-love-Jennings party, but I just didn't think it was that good. I read lots of historical fiction, and I did enjoy Aztec by the same author. The Journeyer however was simply boring. Compare it to Creation by Gore Vidal, where a Persian guy covers pretty much the same terrain, and you know what I mean. Whereas that book is full of intelligence and ideas, this one is simply...empty. It's the only word that comes to mind. Historical fiction lovers out there, don't waste your time on this one. Do read Aztec, but steer clear from mr. Jennings other books (Raptor was just as boring).
Rating: Summary: one of the greatest books I have ever read. A MASTERPIECE! Review: Michener is great, so are Uris and Clavell. Jennings, however, is in a class all by himself. An absolutley superb, magical storyteller with an unparalled gift for expression and prose. The Journeyer is a MASTERPIECE deserving of the same recognition as the works of Dickens, Dostoyevsky, and other of our truly greatest writers.
Rating: Summary: Excellent. This book stays with you for years! Review: I read this book in the 80's and was truly impressed. It is the best book I ever read, and I am an avid reader (have been since childhood). It stayed with me over all these years with the vivid descriptions of the places, the people, the events. I want a soft covered copy for my library, and would like also to email Jennings. Want also to read Raptor which has such wonderful reviews. When will it be released again, or where can I obtain a copy? Thanks!
