Rating: Summary: Best novel I've read since "For Whom The Bell Tolls"! Review: I've been an Amazon.com customer for a long time now, and I've never felt motivated before now to write my opinion of any book I've ordered, but this one truly took my breath away. Wally Lamb succeeds in creating a novel which is at once poignant, humorous, and entirely enrapturing. I think a novel crosses over into the realm of art when it somehow CHANGES the reader, causes some kind of enlightenment. "I Know This Much Is True" did this for me. It explores, in depth, many social issues I'd never much considered. It made me want to get involved -- and for this, I am grateful! Thanks Mr. Lamb!
Rating: Summary: A STORY THAT STICKS WITH YOU Review: would be how I describe Wally Lamb's book. I was intrigued throughout the entire book. Many nights not wanting to turn out the light and go to bed. When I did finish I was sad that I wouldn't hear anymore from Dominic and the rest of the characters. Go OPRAH!! Another terrific book!!
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: I have just finished reading "I Know This Much is True." I can't think of any words of praise to heap onto the pile that won't be repeatative. All the good reviews that have come before mine I agree with, the bad reviews, I can't agree less. Wally Lamb is without a doubt my new favorite. I read "She's Come Undone" and knew I had to read this book. Now I can't wait for his next. It's almost like a spiritual awakening after reading his books. I recommend this book to anyone who values family and wants to understand theirs more.
Rating: Summary: a mixed bag with a compelling storyline Review: As a clinician who works with schizophrenics, is fluent in Italian, and was a huge fan of _She's Come Undone_, I wanted to enjoy Lamb's book much more than I did. Although he paints a believable picture of both the twins and the schizophrenia, he veers far from course when writing the translation of his grandfather's diaries. The translation does not read "true" from a translators point and distracts from the base story rather than adds to it. The entire middle of the book appears unnecessary. When exploring the psyches of the twins and their intricately linked lives, the book shines. I think it meanders too much through the middle and loses some of its raw power by taking the long way around the story.
Rating: Summary: I could'nt put this book down, I hated to see it end.. Review: I first saw the book on Oprah's show, it was wonderful!!! The characters became more and more lifelike as you read this book. I just loved it. Can't wait for Oprah's next recommendation. I also read Shes Come Undone, it was also very good. I'm glad I "treated" myself and ordered this book. Its a Must Buy!!!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book Review: I have just recently had the free time to begin reading in the evenings, a luxury I had enjoyed very much before my children were born. What a great book to start with. I was totally enveloped in the storyline and cried at the end. I did feel that the last few chapters seemed to rush a bit to end the story and put all the pieces in place. But it was still totally enjoyable and I will recommend it to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Wally Lamb is one of the greatest authors of our time! Review: This is a fabulous intricate tale of the intimate dance of a dysfunctional family. Wally Lamb dissects people and makes us watch. The final test of a wonderful story, I closed the book and missed Dominick immediately. The next day, I felt my friends had moved away.
Rating: Summary: No one moves a story like Wally Lamb Review: I work in the book business and read many, many books. Very few of those "stick" after the last chapter. This book is one of those. Just like She's Come Undone you'll find yourself thinking about the characters again and again.. Add this one to the reread pile.
Rating: Summary: Don't you just want to tell these folks to GET A GRIP! Review: OK, OK, I am only abut 400 pages into this (overly) publicized book. From the reviews I've read here, it was a "must read"...I just want to say to these people: get a grip...communicate; talk it out! I am hoping that when I write again with my final thoughts upon completion, I/we will all feel better!
Rating: Summary: I wanted to hold on tight and never let go... Review: When I first began reading this book, I kept thinking about what a long read it would be. In a very short while I was held captive by the characters, their lives, and their circumstances. Wally Lamb captures the essence of our social institutions, our families, and the very fabric of our lives in honesty and heart wrenching language. As a person by profession, who frequents mental institutions and all that they are, I found myself consistently amazed by the language and spirit of Lamb's writing. Everyone who has experienced the joys and sorrows of a family member who is diagnosed with mental illness should find the world that Lamb creates one to relate to, and cry about. I have looked into the eyes of family and individuals as a result of their mental illness, and this is as real as it gets.
