Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read Review: At first I was intimidated by the size of this book, but I found the story so engrossing and interesting, that the size of the book ended up not mattering. In fact, I became so attached to the characters that I didn't want the book to end! Thank you, Wally Lamb, for writing this book. You have given all of us a true gift.
Rating: Summary: What a let down of an ending Review: I was so engrossed in this book and was VERY disappointed at the 25 page wrap up at the end. Dominick was supposedly 'learning' to be a more decent human being throughout the novel yet his 'inner' dialogue at parts still showed that he was a selfish, arrogant jerk. I am also a bit miffed that he remarried his ex-wife (and the fact that Dessa and Joy became 'friends'...please!!) I guess all Dominick was to me was a shallow male who dwelled on his 'feelings', when it basically was only selfishness. I don't know if Lamb tried to over compensate for his 'female' persona in 'She's come undone' by making Dominick such a tough guy, but his descriptions of females were really irritating to me. I found it a bit offensive at times. I just could NOT like Dominick.
Rating: Summary: Never read a book this fast.. Review: I thought this book would be dreadful considering it was 900 pages, but I loved it. I never read a book as fast as I read this one. It was taken in a first person's account, and it drew you into the lives of Dominick, Thomas, and their family and friends. This book kept me up for many nights. A great read!! Oprah was right!!! I can't say more without giving away some good stuff.. But, you'll enjoy it..
Rating: Summary: The best I have ever read. Review: I just got done with the book and thought the ending was perfect in every way. I cried at the end, it was such a relief to know that I could close the book for the last time knowing that Dominick was going to be okay. I felt I was a part of the story, I "felt" for all of the characters in it. Lamb has a way of writing so you don't feel like your reading it, your LIVING it. I laughed out loud at parts throughout the book, it was thoroughly enjoyable and I would love to see it made into a movie! I also can't wait to read his first book, She's Come Undone!!!
Rating: Summary: Wally Lamb ranks as one of my favorite authors! Review: I put off reading this book because of its length, but once I finally got started, it only took me a week to finish. As I was approaching the ending of this book, I wanted to turn back to page one and start all over. What an accomplishment for Wally Lamb! I, like many other reviewers, thoroughly enjoyed She's Come Undone and marvelled at Lamb's ability to get into the mind of a woman so accurately. This book did not disappoint me at all. Other readers mentioned the contrived ending, but in my opinion, we can forgive Lamb for a few contrivances after 850 pages of pure writing genius. Ordinarily I would have been bored by the excerpts from Domenico's diary. Yes, they were a little long-winded. But, because of my Italian heritage, I found them compelling and found myself wondering about my own Italian ancestors and the circumstances surrounding their immigration to the U.S.A. I now plan to research this- something I was never interested in before. As a teac! her eagerly searching for quality contemporary fiction to share with my students, I was struck by the passage which detailed the twins' eating Halloween candy during Mass. That passage, like so many others, is a story-within-a story and one I plan to use this fall with my high school students. Oprah has recommended another remarkable book (though I was disappointed with Breath, Eyes, Memory.) Yes, I can see the point of view of other readers who feel Oprah's too caught up in stories about dysfunctional families. Yet, if we don't study it, how can we change it? And those readers who thought I Know This Much Is True was just too depressing probably also shy away from the evening news. Like many other readers, I'm anxiously awaiting Wally Lamb's next work. Take your time, Wally, I know it'll be worth the wait!
Rating: Summary: A treatise on self-discovery. Review: The first 800 pages are really tough going. Then it lets go of your windpipe just enough for you to take a breath. The struggle is worth the effort--the structure of the novel is probably a metaphor for the story.
Rating: Summary: An interesting journey of a dysfunctional family! Review: I enjoyed reading this lengthy book--a view of a totally dysfunctional family, which ended by giving hope to those who feel trapped by a generational "mess" The building of the characters was very interesting and when you think nothing more could possibly happen---it does! I found it very entertaining and it was something I could put down and pick up days later and still remember the plot, because the characters where so well defined. For anyone who likes to get into the characters heads, this is the book for you!
Rating: Summary: Most gripping story i've ever read. Review: Wally Lamb is a wonderful writer. I couldn't put the book down.
Rating: Summary: U have 2 know where u came from 2 know where u r going Review: Domineco has long wandered why his life always headed towards the toilet. His mother always knew deep down inside exactly why the family was in the unfortunate predicament of personal slander and shame (throught family HIStory). It started with the volcano dirting the lives and dreams of the past desendants and the lava never ceased to boil over the present survivers. Domineco exhibits the strength and tenacity that drove his grandFATHER to America and at the same time still wants to be the little boy Thomas still is at times. To hide form the truth and his eventual fate. GREAT BOOK THANKS MR. LAMB YOU DID IT AGAIN. NOW COME AGAIN!!!
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have ever read in my life. Review: I am not a big reader but I couldn't put this book down. I tell everyone to read this book. Mr. Lamb is the best author. Heather Robinson
