Rating: Summary: Save Me from Marketing! Review: This is a rather quirky novel fictiously set in the Coca Cola Company about the high-powered world of marketing. This author would certainly have us believe that they only things more hyped up than the product being sold, are the hyped-up marketing executives themselves. This is a funny, fast-paced book which was a pleasant change of pace from more traditional novels. As someone who has never been directly involved in marketing, I have no idea whether or not it bears any resemblance to reality, but I do tend to suspect that the idea that the average consumer is a fool, is no doubt spot on.
Rating: Summary: Good clean fun Review: I bought the book. I loved the book. I've bought almost 20 more copies because I keep giving mine away to friends, who pass it on. And so on....You get the picture. It's fun. It's visual. You'll like it, if you don't send it to me, I've got a friend who'll love it.
Rating: Summary: Great taste, VERY filling... Review: Syrup is the kind of book that surprises you. Not only was it a new type of fiction for me (corporate politics), but it grabbed my attention from the very start -- two things that I didn't think would go together. I enjoyed the entire concept and laughed and got fired up with every turning page. So, yes, a book that I thought would only be a pleasant time-passer has surprised me. Never again will I look at marketing in the same way.Scat, an unemployed marketing graduate, has come up with a million-dollar new soft drink idea. Immediately taking the reigns, Scat embarks on a mission to make his idea become reality. He markets his idea to the Coca-Cola Corporation, who in turn is very interested and willing to pay big bucks for the trademark rights. Well, if it were only that easy.... Trouble comes in the form of his roommate, Sneaky Pete, who vies for a position on Coke's corporate ladder, sending Scat roadblocks at every turn. New Products Marketing Manager, 6 (her actual name), befriends Scat in his time of need. Sparks begin to fly as revenge is played out in full-force. Reading this book was like the best rollercoaster but without the long lines and unstable equilibrium. Chapters are interspersed with clever marketing snippets that can definitely change the way you think about the products you see advertised on television. Syrup was chock-full of behind-the-scenes scoop of the corporate world and all the dirty tricks that can be played in order to get ahead. Very juicy and hip. Read this novel and be enlightened....
Rating: Summary: Do yourself a favour and buy this book Review: This is the best book I have read in years and is the only book at amazon.com that I think deserves more than five stars. As another reader said funny does not do this book justice. The story is a cynical look at Marketing (adveristing) and is set around three main characters: Scat, 6 and sneaky pete. Scat comes up with a new soft drink that he tries to sell to Coca-cola but this go horribly wrong. What makes this book so great is the novel way it was written. The marketing case studies were excellent comic relief and added to the short punching sub-chapters. The characters were outstanding, well developed and very believable. The difficult-funny- situations the characters found themselves did not strain believability and yet were totally hilarious. (re, the new coke ad) The book will appeal to anyone in the generation X age group (not recommended for people over forty) or anyone who is really cynical. DEFINITELY BUY THIS BOOK
Rating: Summary: A great, quick read! Review: Maxx Barry definitely summed up the world of marketing in this book that takes you through the lives of two young marketing execs that would do anything to succeed. This book will keep you guessing and have you laughing through every page as you watch scat and 6 attempt to climb the corporate ladder. For those of you who love books like Bridget Jones' Diary, Sex and the City, and Fried Calamari, you will want to add Syrup! to your "must read" list.
Rating: Summary: BUY THIS BOOK. Funny doesn't do it justice. Review: I have read few books that have had me laughing out loud, and even then it amounted to a few scattered chuckles. This book had me laughing on every page, I think we can all relate to feeling abused by the marketing industry in it's various exploits to keep us brainwashed and smiling about it. This book is revenge! Following Scat through his post-pubescent trials with love interest 6 (yes, that's really her name) woven through the madness of getting his cola ideas stolen time and time again is priceless. It's a quick read, and you won't be able to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Concur Review: Gripping. Hip. Addictive - read it straight through in six hours last nite. Good thing I can catch a few winks here at work...
Rating: Summary: A library reject goldmine! Review: I had never heard of Barry or this novel until I browsed across the paperback at a bookstore one time. The cover looked dumb, but the concept pretty cool. I declined the purchase simply b/c of the cover. Lo and behold, a few weeks later while browsing... at my local library, I came across the book again. I loved the cover and bought it, figuring what the ? Well, needless to say (but I will anyway), this was a great book. I read it in about 2 days (and I even was working those days) while commuting to and from work on the L. Very funny, very frank, very real...not so much in the workings of themarketing world, but in the characters' motivations and emotions. I recommendbuying this one today...
Rating: Summary: Buy this book! Review: A good story, with memorable characters, a breakneck pace, and dozen of laugh-out-loud lines. SYRUP is simply a perfect read. I loved it, and am starting up a U.S. chapter of the Official Sneaky Pete Fan Club.
Rating: Summary: Hysterical and dead-on-target Review: Amazingly enough, Barry has managed to capture the essence of many modern-day romantic interactions while at the same time telling an amusing and captivating story. His prose style is succinct and sharp, and always entertaining. Highly recommended for a quick, few-hour read!
