Rating: Summary: Funky! Review: This is a great read - I really couldn't put it down. Have given it to a few friends and they think the same. Sure, it's a little corny, but if I wanted serious, I'd read Jane Austen. It's fun, friendly (the writing style, not the characters in the book), entertaining and most of all a bloody good read. Cheers to Maxx!
Rating: Summary: Learn the rule of threes, Maxx Review: This book is an annoying read. The rule of threes in fiction states that after the same behavior is repeated twice, the third time needs to be a payoff. But there are no payoffs here. Scat is rendered homeless at least four times, is snubbed dead by the ladylove who hates him but really loves him an equal or better number, and is betrayed in various configurations more times than I cared to count. The overall effect is a bad deja vu where the lead never learns a thing. People can be stupid and dense in real life, but Barry's protagonist really pushes the edge of how much idiocy one person can be capable of. And with me, it crossed the line. Two stars is more than generous.
Rating: Summary: Riveting AND Inspiring! Review: This is the kind of book that high school seniors and college kids should read, whether they're stoner slacker waiting to get asked to the prom or 4.0s at MIT. This is the kind of book that will make these kids, whoever the hell they are -0 change their majors to marketing in an instant after reading. It's true to life, the situation are nothing but pure REALISM in it's most base contexts, this book has it all - well except tons of sex, but if it makes you feel better it has a teeny bit. And the charcaters in this book fits pretty much all the people in the world, so no one that reads this book can say, "Well, if it's so real how come I couldn't identify with just one situation in here! ". It's got it all, it's flaunting it all, Maxx Barry's debut is pure genius. PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER ONE ASAP
Rating: Summary: Wow wow wow wow. Review: I received this book as a gift from a friend, and well now I need to raid my friend's bookshelf to see what else he's got. At first I didn't believe some of these other reviews, but I promise you, I _really_ couldn't put the book down. Really.I laughed out loud often during the course of this fast-paced, clever novel. It's very well written and draws you right in. Now I know what to get my other friends for gifts!
Rating: Summary: Good Slurpin' Review: This book is unreal; i have never read anything else like it. The first scenario is one of the most amusing things i have ever read - i even tell my friends about it. The book rules up to the last ten pages, which win it a 4 instead of a 5. The ending is rather disappointing, but the rest is worth the read.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: Not to rush to judgement, but I bought this book the other day, right ? I take it home, put on some Rick James (you know, some light readin' music) and I'm reading away. I COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! Granted, yes, I'm only halfway through it ,but it was all in one day! And I'm not the kind of guy that cant't put a book down. This book lays out life right before your very eyes. It tells you things that you already know, yet it reminds you of things that you should know, since the television people and the movie people have such a grand time at making life such a fantasy island. Basically, it tells you that your best friend(s) could turn into a Sneaky Pete at any given moment depending on the situation ,all women are nothing but 6s (NOTHING, but trouble) and we're all stuck promoting the Coca-Cola company no matter what we do in this world. Maxx Barry, you are the man of the hour, I can't wait to see what you've got next.
Rating: Summary: An amusing look at the evils of marketing Review: "Syrup" takes all the perils of the corporate world and throws them upon its self-named hero, Scat, one by one. Whether you've worked in the field or dealt with it from another department, you'll appreciate the dark humor that paints marketing as the most evil of professions while simultansously glorifying it. The finale is a bit weak, but the zany events leading up to it make the story more than worthwhile.
Rating: Summary: Burp Review: 'Syrup' starts off strong, but quickly loses its fizz. The characters are great, but the story is just so ridiculous and completely removed from reality, that it ruins whatever good points remain. All hype.
Rating: Summary: BUY THIS BOOK! IT'S FABULOUS, FUNNY & ORIGINAL Review: Hey everyone! Maxx Barry is an Australian! Which proves that we're exporting major MAJOR talent. This book is too fantastic for words. Read it!
Rating: Summary: WOW! Never have I read a book like this Review: I was determined to find a novel, one that I would actually read. So I read the blurb of every book that's cover caught my eye until I came to this one. I opened up the jacket and there were the words, in big bold letters, I WANT TO BE FAMOUS. From that moment the book just got better and better, capturing every single part of me. Usually it takes about 50 pages for me to even somewhat enjoy this book. But from the first sentance i was hooked. This book is excellet, i coudln't put it down, I would read during breaks at work and on days when I would normally sleep past ten, I would wake up at eight o'clock with an urge to grab my book find a place to sit and just read. It was amazing, never before had a read such a compelling novel.
