Rating: Summary: Madison Avenue, unzipped. Review: Modern, funny, original. Bought it because of the cover, read it because I got hooked and have since given it to three other people all of whom loved it. You don't have to know or care a thing about marketing or Coke to fully enjoy these pages. You just have to like to read. Of course the problem is, it's a first novel, so once you're done you can't then go and read the other books. The good news is that there is no doubt more to come from this fresh, funny and excellent writer.
Rating: Summary: A Pause That Refreshes Review: Scat is someone whom you can identify with. 6 is the thinking-man's temptress. Together they provide the dynamic for the ultimate marketing satire. The final commercial/movie wasn't revealed. That's the only fault. Otherwise it flows as fast and is refreshing as a cold coke from the bottle on a sultry summer afternoon.
Rating: Summary: Highly entertaining! Review: "Syrup" was fantastic! I was going though one of those book slumps, when you just can't find a good book, and then I read "Syrup" and my faith in fiction was restored. If you are looking for a book that is fast-paced with a great story and even better characters, I can highly recommend this one. Very funky and smart!
Rating: Summary: This book is hilarious. Review: I couldn't put it down. My commute was torture because I had trouble reading and driving at the same time."Syrup" is very hip and very smart. It was one of the best book tips I've gotten in a long time. The book starts with a guy, Scat, who wants to make a lot of money in marketing. Scat is someone a lot of people can relate to- trying to make it despite his own goofiness. While he's got ideas, he spends much of the book learning (the hard way) the absurd, manipulative rules of the corporate game. Luckily he finds help from a woman named "6", who has all the savvy Scat lacks. The story twists are frantic and funny. It starts fast, and by the end, when Winona Ryder appears made up as an alien queen addicted to Coca-cola, you know you've been taken on an incredibly inventive and original ride.
Rating: Summary: Syrup - a caffine-addictive hit of a read Review: A fast and funny book which follows the marketing campaign of a new soft drink, Fukk. Set in ultra hip LA, Scat and 6 have to content with Sneaky Pete, who with a complete lack of ethics, thwarts their endevours to become rich and famous. Couldn't put this book down, it was so addictive.
Rating: Summary: A Very Clever First Novel Review: Michael George Holloway, the narrator and marketing graduate from Cal State summa cum laude, changes his name to "Scat" in order to better market himself for a marketing job. So begins this rollicking novel about the cut-throat world of business. Along the way Scat meets the beautiful 6-- her parents named her zero and changed her name every year on her birthday, but they both died just after renaming her "6"-- there's also the aptly named "Sneaky Pete" and the beautifullly blonde @. I suppose we could probably spell her name "Ambers Anne" because of her lemony looks. In keeping with the tone of this novel, the chapters are marked by bar codes; and marketing case studies are interspersed throughout this tale: for example, mktg case study #1: mktg perfume - TRIPLE YOUR PRICE. THIS GIVES CUSTOMERS THE IMPRESSION OF GREAT QUALITY. HELPS PROFITS TOO. Mr. Barry, who has taught marketing at "two major universities" in Australia, convinces me that he understands the ugly but funny world he writes about. What we ultimately have, however, is an old-fashioned love story with enough laughs for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Loved it Review: Stumbled across this book via a magazine review (Fast Company) and absolutely loved it. Funny, irreverent, etc. I've ordered the second book (Jennifer Government) already and am looking forward to reading it.
Rating: Summary: Amazon stop sucking Review: I already wrote an online review of Syrup that kicked ass but Amazon was having some "technical problems" and didn't save it and I a bailed because it was taking too long. I'm just writing this to see if their working again because I'm not going to waste my time writing a real review and find out it's useless. Vios con dios Dickerios!
Was this review helpful to you? No? Well it shoudn't be, jerk off.
Rating: Summary: Barry does it again Review: After reading Jennifer Government and being completely and totally enthralled with the no frills look at the corporate world, I was hooked on Maxx Barry's writing. I set out to find his second title, which actually was written first, Syrup.
From the moment I picked it up, I was hooked. The book is organized in a way that the story is told in a series of events that daisy chain upon one another and the plot never stops. Scat and 6 are well formed characters that exploit various facets of the personas in the book with great flair and subtle charm. Their defiance of all odds keeps you routing for their sucess even in the bleakest of situations.
This book is a quick read and a whole lot of fun. You're reading the story of Scat and 6 before you're actually processing the corporate dance in which they are so entwined.
I really enjoyed reading this book and can see myself reading it again in no time.
Rating: Summary: marketing runs the free world Review: Really fun book. Moves fast. A romp thru the world of marketing a new soda with two totally driven wannabes. Everybody read this book and then work on your expressive one-eye brow arching and of course, a new name to match your image because perception IS reality!....Syrup is worth buying.
