Rating: Summary: Excellent - Can't put it down Review: This is a superb book that is so irresistible I have read in twice in the past 3 weeks. I absolutely adore it. Fun, humorous, yet real and totally 'doable'. This book is a must for any woman to read. Can't wait to read Mr. Maybe and Bookends. If they are anything like Jemima J then I am in for a treat!!
Rating: Summary: Just a note... Review: People should keep in Mind this book is written in 'UK sizes.' This is why i found the book so far-fetched, and wonder if Green has ANY idea of real size. For example, her return to a 'curvy' size 10 is really a US 6/8! If Jemima is a 'HUGE' 16, she's really a 12 or 14 in our USA sizing. at 5'7" to boot! hardly grotesque! This story would have been more convincing if the author took such things into consideration. Before the sizes were mentioned, I imagined someone morbidly obese--not someone average sized!
Rating: Summary: Shallow, but fun! Review: This is one of the most shallow and poorly-researched books I have ever read. Despite this, I found it to be very entertaining! Reading this book gave me the same sensation as watching a sappy chick flick. The story line was unrealistic, and the characters not very well developed. If you're just interested in a quick, enjoyable read, and not a literary experience, then this is your book. For the most part, the book is told from Jemima's point of view. Some readers seemed to be annoyed by the third-person narrator who chimes in from time to time throughout the book, offering an outsider's perspective on Jemima's various exploits and predicaments. I actually thought this was a useful technique, as it allowed the reader to stop and ponder the book's events instead of whizzing right through them. Another point that bothered some readers was Jemima's obsession with being thin and her very quick weight loss. Keep in mind that Jane Green clearly did not intend this book to be a commentary about weight loss or healthy body image. It's just a fun read, and getting hung up on the "deeper implications" of the book will just detract from the reader's enjoyment.
Rating: Summary: fun, tho dissapointing Review: i do love these quick "queen for a day" stories, uplifting tales of women who gain the lives they dream of thru effort and hard work. as quick and easy a read this was, the point was convoluted. what kind of a 200+ lb. woman drops so much weight and never puts it back on, even when she chills down with the exercise and health food obsession? i was totally offended at a point when it seemed to refer to a size 10 as being "bigger". isn't the average size of women in the US a 14? an ironic tale, we learn that even the fat girls are loved by some, but this book makes those who love a larger women out to be really horrid people. as well, everything, of course, works out perfectly in the end. a happy ending, but the means to which the reader arrives at it are nowhere near justification. as for quick summer reads, this definatley was not my favorite.
Rating: Summary: you can pass on this one... Review: after hearing from several of my friends that i'm going to "love this book" and i won't be able to put it down, i decide to read it, having borrowed it from a coworker. i realized very quickly how easy it was for me to skim over pages at a time. (mind you, i NEVER skim books) the first/third person switch was not well done, and it was highly annoying when, in the third person, the author would write "jemima jones" or "ben williams" redundantly over sentences. basically i felt that most of the story written in third person could already have been understood by the reader. i really didn't see the point in having both third and first person narratives. it was lighthearted and an easy read. if you're not looking for substance, then it's a decent book. but there's definitely better ones out there. just my two cents.
Rating: Summary: OUCH! Review: I had such high hopes for this book after my thin/always been thin friends recommended it to me as "such a cute story" that I would love. I started out loving it, but very quickly realized that this is NOT the story for the always-been fat girl with low self esteem to read. Of course it's a sweet story for someone who only feels Jemima's pain until they close the book. This book may be fine for the average girl or the prom queen, but if you were like me, the overweight, self loathing girl, you will absolutely want to throw this book at the wall. For anyone who's been there, it's obvious that if you suddenly lost 100 pounds, the last thing you would do is enjoy everyone suddenly accepting you, and not feel resentment for people only wanting you when you become something your not. This book made me so angry, and makes me wonder if the author had ever been overweight. The begining descriptions of Jemima's feelings would have lead me toward yes, but by the end, I was convinced she was venturing into something she definitely knew nothing about. If you've never been overweight or shallowness doesn't bother or offend you, you'll love this book. Otherwise, save yourself the hurt that this story will leave you feeling when it's over.
Rating: Summary: More Than What I Expected.... Review: Loved this book. I half didn't even want to read it because of the reviews and because it seemed like such a 'rip-off' of Bridgette Jones' Diary. But this story was great. It had twists and turns that kept it flowing quickly and enough 'umph' in it's changing faces to keep me very interested. Fun read for sure!
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: This was one of the best books I have read in quite a while. It kept me hooked from the first chapter, as its story is much like my own life. Green expertly told the story of an overweight young woman who lead an anonymous life- hardly noticed by anyone except for her caddy roommates and a few select co-workers. She discovers the internet, meets a handsome man in California, and decides to take the biggest risk of her life. She decides to lose the weight that has been her security blanket her whole life. Jemima, now thin, beautiful, and the object of mens' desires, decides to fly to LA to meet her internet romance. This book, although at times wierd to read due to the odd narration, was completley captivating. I got lost in her world and never wanted to leave. I most definitely recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt like the "ugly duckling" among a pond of "swans".
Rating: Summary: Sweet, fun & real Review: I cannot believe people would criticize such a darling Cinderella story!! I read books for entertainment and I thought this was a fun read. Jane Green is a super writer who really made me feel as if I understood Jemima. She was so descriptive that I felt as if I were there experiencing everything myself. Of course it's not Shakespeare, but for chrissake, it is entertainment that I enjoyed and made me feel good. Jane Green (I think) has good values as well. Lisa Bernard
Rating: Summary: A Laugh A Minute! Review: I don't know what some of these reviewers are talking about! 'Jemima J' is an excellent book that keeps you smiling and laughing till the end. I am overweight and this book was not offending at all .. some people just take things too seriously. This book is a page-turner and you'll have a smile on your heart after you read this.
