Summary: Too cute to put down!
Review: This book was great, all about the fat girl with her skinny and trendy friends and her hopeless crush. The only thing I didn't like was the author's idea of "fat" is a size 14. That really isn't fat. But the book is motivational for all us girls who want to lose a little weight and transform ourselves into model wannabes!!

Summary: not a very well-written one
Review: Anyone hoping that Green's Jemima will rival Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones will be very much disappointed. Fielding can write. Green can't. She's not funny, not suspenseful, not believable. Thank heavens I merely borrowed this clunker from the library rather than buying it. Nice cover art, though.

Summary: fun & uplifting
Review: Ignore the reviewers who claim this book is offensive and condescending to overweight people. Lighten up! (no pun intended) Don't take it that seriously! This book is fun, light, and uplifting. It is about a CHARACTER who is overweight, lonely and unhappy. It does not generalize that all overweight women are worthless. In fact, the author is making a point that SOCIETY has unrealistic expectations that women should be rail thin in order to be beautiful. Notice how Jemima is obsessed with looking at models in fashion magazines? So she crash diets and then later realizes that starving herself isn't the answer either. It's about finding your own identity, finding confidence, friendship, and becoming physically and emotionally healthy and happy.

The writing style is a little different; the character is written in the first-person, yet she talks to the audience. There is also a narrator who talks to the audience. The writing skips between Jemima and the narrator. But you get used to it. The back cover talks about a surprise ending, which I kept waiting for. There is a big surprise, but it comes about 20 or 30 pages before the ending. The actual ending is actually a little predictable. Still, it is worth reading. I am not skinny or fat, more of a "medium" size, and I actually felt motivated to eat healthier and exercise a bit. I definitely plan on reading more books by this author.

Summary: DEFINITELY A PAGE-TURNER!!
Review: I read this book in about 4 hours (occasionally stopping because I was supposed to be working. The plot was so good and fulfilling and the ending just made you so happy (not gonna spoil if for you of course!). Jane Green describes Jemima's hardships with obesity as if she were Jemima (although if you look at the author picture, you'll see that she is definitely not overweight). When I first picked up the book, I had just read Bridget Jones' Diary and I felt that this was a perfect companion. If you like to read books that you can't stop reading, this is definitely a highly recommended one for you.

Summary: Jemima J
Review: I don't understand why the ratings on this book are so disparate. Anyone buying it had to know it was not going to be "great literature". It is a pleasant enough book and certainly had humorous moments and is as undeservng of the venomous comments as it is undeserving of the raves.
I had no problem with the 1st person, third person switch during the book, but I did feel that the book could have had a less pat ending. After she arrived in LA, I was wondering if I was reading the same book. Certainly liked the first part of the book more than the last. But the book had it's moments and I would read another Jane Green book when I was in the mood for light reading.

Summary: excellent book
Review: This was the first work of fiction I have read in a long time and I thought it was excellent. I actually loved how the characters, however sometimes predictable and overly coincidental, come into contact with one another because it still kept me in suspense, with hope of what would happen next. I couldn't see most of what was coming and became thoroughly engaged in jemima's thoughts and could not put the book down until I had finished it and then I still wanted more. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for light reading with a good plot and lots of laughter. I know I will be on the lookout for similar types of books from now on. Read it and enjoy!!

Summary: Love Jemima J!
Review: This book was so enjoyable to read. Jane Green tells a great story and there are several laugh out loud scenes.

I've been reading many single-chick novels lately, and this is easily one of the best. At first I found it difficult to understand the switch from 1st to 3rd person perspective. Once I got used to it, I thought it was a brilliant way to tell the story.....seeing the scene from all angles. I loved the suspense when you knew two people were in the same place, but they never ran into each other.

The only gripe I have about the book was that the climactic twist was a bit of a stretch. I was expecting something more sinister and a tad more realistic, but then why read fiction if it's not "out there"?

Overall, this book was one of the most interesting I've read lately. I highly recommend it.

Summary: your kidding, right?
Review: Okay. So I'm in a new bookstore tryin to find a book to read on vacation cause accidently, i left all the books I was gonna bring at home. I could hurt that skinny little size 2 sales girl who told me this book was hilarous.

This book is serverly dull. The story line is a 'tad' unbelievable, I think there was one chracter i found likeable (and it wasn't any of the main chracters), and the writting structure, well, lets put it this way, i could have done better and i just write for fun, considering Ms. Green switchs writting patterns in middle of every chapter atleast twice a chapter, it makes the book confusing to read.

The story is basically about this overweight woman who is desperetly in love with a, what i suppose the author thinks, is a 'Prince Charming' type. She meets this guy (a differnt guy) over the internet, she tells him she's this skinny little thing, and then says that she'll meet him (First mistake right there). As a result, she pratically starves herself and over does it at the local gym and eventually flies to America to 'live' with this stranger she 'knows' over the internet after she's lost a significant amount of weight. Lets just say while in America, she sees things from a 'skinny' person way and basically, tho the author never says it directly, thinks of herself better then the overweight people she meets. I realize some might think i have included spoilers, but if they save one person from wasting their time on this book then I'll live.

As a 'curvy' woman, i find this book almost insulting to my weight and who i am inside. I can't belive Green is basically telling women to change who they are for a man. Thinking back to that skinny little sales girl who tricked me into buying this book, i can see why she might have found this book funny if she had even read it at all.

Read Bridget Jones, the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, or the Shopaholic books instead. Those are worth your time, unlike Jemima J. I honestly hate writting up bad reviews, but I felt the need.

Summary: Enjoyable but sends a mixed message
Review: This book is a fairy tale - a wonderful, delightful fairy tale - but the heroine of the story doesn't really start her path to true happiness until she starves and exercises herself silly. It has good things to say about society's predilections with weight and beauty, but ultimately the story doesn't really get rolling - and no one really seems to notice how beautiful Jemima is on the inside - until she loses those extra 100 pounds. Which I suppose is in and of itself a commentary on society, but the message is so wrapped up in sweet fantasy that it may get lost on some readers.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: not what I expected
Review: I found myself starting to like the characters in this book, but I at the same time I found myself disliking the author...if that makes any sense. I don't think she really had a sense of what she was talking about, maybe those who have never been obese shouldn't try to explain it. Also, I didn't like the overall morale of the story...I you do something dangerous that could cause you serious health problems but makes you thin, all your dreams will come true.
