Rating: Summary: A wonderful inspirational book for women Review: This book is what made me start reading constantly from book to book again. I could not put this book down. It was great from begining to end. I was wishing there was more to read of it when I had finished. I passed it on to my sisters, my mom and a few of my friends. They couldnt believe how great this book is. I cant wait to read every book of Jane Greene.
Rating: Summary: Unexpectedly Excellent Review: This is such a page turning, satisfying, brit-chick-book. Jemima (JJ) is a character you cannot help but to cheer for, cry with, laugh with and love. JJ transforms her body for an internet mystery man half way around the world, when her heart is truly on a man right in her own world. Although the man over seas turns out to be -- well, not what he appears, he may be the best thing to ever happen to Jemima. As does her trip to LA. For not all fairy tales become reaility, but sometimes, life can be just like a dream. And in the case of Jemima, the reader cannot help but to want it to. Jemima is a real, intelligent captivating character who anyone can relate to. This is a great pick-me-up book with laughs, tears of joy, and appreciation for the new genre of brit-feel good books. I recommend it to anyone who wants a light but satisfying and delicious read.
Rating: Summary: Admit I read it, but rolled my eyes all the way through... Review: Don't get me wrong, I think books like this are great fun. I didn't have a problem with the story, they're all the same, down to what they drink and smoke and watch on TV, but the writer's "style" was grating. Her popping into the story, I think it was her, at least, was annoying, hacky, and contrived. Oh, yes, it was. And how do we know that? Because we spent the money, spent the time and read every word.
Rating: Summary: What a fun fanasty book! Review: I wasn't going to cave in and buy this book while shopping for Christmas presents the other day, but since I didn't have anything to read during a quick dinner break, I didn't see much else that interested me. And was I in for a delightful surprise! This is going to be among my favorite British book ... Jemima J. is a delightful, saucy and fun book to read. People say it's just a fanasty ~~ and that is the reason why I love it. Who cares if the story doesn't happen in real life? That is the stuff of dreams ~~ of which good fiction is made of! This book is it! Jemima J. is an overweight girl who works a drudgery job at a newspaper in London. Food is her consolation while everyone around her is thin and happy. She also dreams of being thin and beautiful. Only she didn't think it was ever going to happen. A series of events propel her to a gym where she begins losing weight. Along the way, she discovers love and all the fun stuff that comes from being thin and glamourous. Only, she thinks maybe it's not all it is cracked up to be. This is such a witty book that tugs at your heartstrings. You find yourself rooting for Jemima as she undergo a marvelous reformation as a person ~~ beautiful inside and out. This is way better than Mr. Maybe, Green's other novel that I have read. Maybe it's because the reader can relate to Jemima's insecurities and desires to be rich, famous and thin. Not all of us are like that and some of us harbor a secret desire to live that glamourous life and being lucky in love. Jane Green outdid herself with this book. It is definitely a book I'll read again. It's also a book I'd loan to my friends who are still single ~~ they sure can relate to the dating woes in this book! If you're looking for a quick read in between all that Christmas shopping, wrapping presents, baking and whatnots, I highly recommend this one! It's also a great book to give your sister or girlfriend ... they'll love it and you!
Rating: Summary: Ugly ducklings, we are not!! Review: Yes, I will agree that I just could not put this book down....no matter how mad I became, I wanted to see what would happen next. But I was upset!!! If you have ever been overweight in your life, don't read this book. I could not believe that Jane Green described Jemima as grossly overweight, so much so that no one would give her the time of day. Then, in the middle of the book, Green tells us that Jemima is 5 foot 7 and 217 pounds!! Then you look at the picture of the author on the back cover and you understand everything.
Rating: Summary: Jemima J Review: This book is a great read! Although it took a few chapters to get into the character, once I did- I could not put it down. Jemima is someone you don't have to relate to in order to enjoy her plight when she decides to try and turn her life around. It is so well written and flows so well, I didn't want to miss a word while reading. The other characters surrounding her are equally as entertaining. I just went and purchased Jane Green's other book and hope it is as good as this one.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: I really liked the book. I too am overweight and although I have had boyfriends, I do know what Jemima feels like. When you are overweight the only time it seems you get a guy's attention is as a friend. But also I have seen girls who are overweight be very popular with the guys. I think in the end, attitude is all that matters. If you feel bad, it will show. If you display confidence everyone will want to be around you. Thin or not.
Rating: Summary: A complete fairy tale Review: This book was well written and kept my interest that I couldn't put it down. I was also confused with the switching of the narration because I had no idea who was talking at that point. It was an outsider looking in to foreshadow what will happen soon (not that the reader couldn't already figure it out because it was a predictable story). The story is about an overweight British girl, Jemima Jones who is completely obsessed with the way she looks. She thinks that no one likes her because she is so overweight and no man could take a romantic interest in her. I felt like yelling at the book saying, "You know Jemima, there is more to a person than just looks!" The book made everyone in the world seem shallow and that men and women only like others because they are thin, gorgeous and are healthy. This is why I had some problems with the way the material was presented in the book. I felt sorry for Jemima, living with two roommates who were nice to her face but rude to her behind her back. When she met someone (a man), they always had an ulterior motive for 'getting the guy.' That part could be one of the realistic points of the book. I felt that the moral of the story was to lose weight until you look like a model in a magazine and then the world is in the palm of your hand. You can then get anything you want in life. Yes, this story is a modern day fairy tale.
Rating: Summary: How every woman of a plus size thinks Review: Once I opened this book, I was unable to put it down no matter how hard I tried. Jemima Jones is the voice of every woman with a little extra meat on thier bones. I laughed out loud as I was reading this book thinking about how I had the EXACT same thoughts as Jemima Jones had. I couldn't picture a book that parallels my life more than Jemima J.
Rating: Summary: Jemima J was a good read Review: This book was really good. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it could've been better and switching from the different point of views was really weird, but after the first two chapters, I got used to it. I wish she could've been happier being the weight that she was though. It isn't always better being skinny. It's alright to have a little weight on your body. Overall, I liked this book a lot...just wish she could've been more comfortable being overweight.
