Summary: One of the best novels I've read about Indian women
Review: This book touched me deeply and made me even more grateful for my close relationship with my own sister. I was glad that Sudha and Anju were reunited in the end, and that their love for each other continued to be the strongest power in their lives. Storytelling at its best...I will remember this novel for a long time.

Summary: Read this book....NOW !
Review: This book made me laugh, cry and every emotion in between. I read a lot so when a friend recommended this book as "the best book she's ever read" I was cautious. She was right!I found myself caring so much about "my girls" that I would sleep with the book under my pillow so that I knew they were right there .(In case they needed me ,or I them ...I'm not sure!) I found the writing to be poetic, yet very easy to read, the relationship between the cousins, their mothers and husbands were wonderful,I truly believed every thing that happened to them, .I have a new understanding of the Indian culture yet these women are simply-----wonderfuly.....Human,I cared SO deeply, At the end of each reading I would have a smile on my face :) I have since bought many copies for friends I think are worthy of reading this beautiful, amazing, loving book. read it...it will enrich you.

Summary: One of the best I've read all year (and I read a lot!)
Review: I expected this book to be a slow read because the Bengali culture was unfamiliar to me. Initially, I needed to study every Indian word and custom. However, before long, I found myself so utterly engrossed in the characters and the story, that the cultural setting became irelevant (though nonetheless fascinating). The themes of love and sacrifice are timeless. The "sisters" devotion to each other was remarkable and brought me to tears more than once. This was not a schmaltzy. predictable, "chick-book" (as my husband might say). It was a wonderful love story that transcends time and and gender. What a wonderful story. HIGHLY recommend this one! It'll lift your spirits. (How about a sequel, please?)

Summary: Sister of my Heart
Review: Being only at the age of 13, some of you may not believe that I have actually read this book. But I have, and to tell the truth, it is the best book I have ever read. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni does a wonderful job at painting the portait of these two young women in words. I only hope to become a writer half as good as her.

Summary: Sister of My Heart
Review: Sister of My Heart was a beautifully written book about love and sisterhood that comes from caring about another person, regardless of their station in life or their personal circumstances. It gave me a new perspective on life in India and arranged marriages, something that I knew very little about, nor did I even realize still took place. The writing was lyrical and poetic, something very refreshing to read in today's world of literature. Wonderful messages for women. Ms Divakaruni has become one of my favorite writers, largely because of this book and the emotions that it brought to me. I hope that she continues to write such beautiful books, as I'll be waiting in line to buy them all.

Summary: Anxious to read again and again
Review: I used to be an avid reader, but now that I have kids and this whole life, I didn't have time to read anything except stories for them. But this book, Sister of My Heart, was for me completely. Once I started the wonderful and heartbreaking story of Sudha and Anju, I couldn't stop reading it until the end, even taking my lunch hour early at work because I couldn't wait to get back to the gripping tale of these two very special cousins. When their lives had heartbreak, I felt it, and when they celebrated, I felt like I was there. This is easily the best book I've ever read and if I could tell anything to the author, it would be to write more about the lives of Sudha, Anju and their mixed families.

Summary: Appeals to sensibilities of South Asian Women
Review: Divakaruni has an art, which I cannot seem to describe in words(my words are feeble compared to the author's), to feel the emotionsof South Asian women towards life, love (of all kinds: familial, parental, platonic, errotic, etc.), and happiness. I found "Sister of My Heart" to be very moving and profound in its exploration of Sudha and Anju. The story of the ruby cave and the fathers may seem ridiculously transparent to some, but it is not the crux or heart of the novel - it is not the theme of the novel. It is only the lie, the deception, that brings forth the theme: the love between female sisters, friends, cousins, whatever - the bond between women that can fray due to our pathetic society that tells us that we need a man in our lives; we must have a man in our lives, and to be beautiful - physically - elicits that ever empowering heterosexual bond in our lives; that without that bond, that penis in your life, your worth is little.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and recommend not only "Sister of my Heart" to readers, but Divakaruni's collection of short stories: "Arranged Marriage" whose various images are haunting. END

Summary: THE GREATEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
Review: This book is touching for people of all ages. It shows the harsh reality of arranged marriages and the way women are supposed to act toward men. It makes you laugh and makes you cry. A great classic.

Summary: A review
Review: I bought this book because I liked the sound of it from the back cover but I was very pleased that it lived up to expectations. It was a little slow to start with but I could not put it down. I am not too sure about the ending either but the middle was worth all the effort. I would reccommend this book to anyone especially if they have a little knowledge or feeling of the East like me.
