Rating: Summary: A truly magical book Review: This book is a master piece. This was the best book I ever read and I should know I'm only 13 but I've read more than my share of books. This should be turned into a movie, Brian of Boruma makes William Wallace look like a child. And if they're lookin for somebody to have a small part like Turlough I'll gladly play the part.
Rating: Summary: Absoultely Fantastic Review: This is possibly the best book I have ever read. Brian Boru is absolutely one of the greatest subjects for a book ever, and Morgan Llywelyn does an incredible job of bringing him to life. Amazingly, she traces his story from a young boy to his death in his 70's, and yet the book never drags. When I was done, I immediately went out and bought "Pride of Lions" just to keep the story going. Great book from a great author. Also, I agree with the other reviewer who suggested that this would make an even better movie than "Braveheart". It would be perfect for Liam Neeson.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book so much I named my son Brian! Review: Definatly a classic. Those of us who are Irish/Scottish have something to be proud of in Brian Boru and the man who brings us his story, Morgan Llewellyn.
Rating: Summary: Not bad! Review: Morgan Llywelyn has much talent as a writer and there there are times when she shines. However, overall this novel lacks some luster. As is the general flaw in her work, Llywelyn seems to lose pace halfway through the novel and closes in an anti-climax. However, the deepest flaw in this novel is her description of battle scenes. Many times they are glossed over in summary and when she does write in detail of war she doesn't seem to grasp the grit and grime that was inevitable in the these life and death struggles. In other words, she tends to romantacize the battle sequences. In addition, the characters in the novel seem uni-dimentional and inconsistent. We are left without a clear understanding of Boru's motives and personality that seem schizophrenic at times. All in all, though, its an entertaining read based on an historical period that is fascinating.
Rating: Summary: great book Review: This is a great book but it has about 25 grammar typos. For example:"Why do you suppose is the strongest man in ireland?"Why should be who
Rating: Summary: I lived Brian's life with each word I read. Review: This is the first Morgan Llywelyn book I have read and I can't wait to read more of her books. I loved this book from page one. I fell in love with Brian and felt his pain and victories right along with him. It is a powerful story about a powerful man. I've wanted to go to Ireland for a long time to explore my own family history and after this book I want it even more.
Rating: Summary: Brian Boru in a movie??? Review: Someone please tell me that there is a movie producer out there somewhere with enough sense to realize that the story of Brian Boru is worth being told.I read this book about 6 months before Braveheart came out at the theaters. I don't want to take anything away from Mel Gibson's acting and directing abilities, but the whole time I sat in the theater watching Braveheart I kept thinking to myself that this movie was not nearly as captivating as THE LION OF IRELAND. The similarities were there, but that only made me long for the pages of THE LION OF IRELAND only more than ever. Brian Boru was the kind of leader born of warrior stock whose presence demanded respect and reverance. He was the type of leader who if he only asked, his followers would follow him through a wall of fire and come out on the other side victorious! Read this book! Not one person who has read this book and reviewed it has given it less than 5 stars!
Rating: Summary: An Irish CLassic Review: this book is one of the best books ever written. almost like the braveheart of ireland.... you feel as if you live all of Brian Buru's life.
Rating: Summary: =8^I a classic Review: this is one of my favorite books. i was fortunate enough to have read it originally 15 years ago, and have read it once a year since. i always start it on good friday, the day brian boru died in 1014. it means that much to me. now when i finish 'lion...' i'll start the sequel 'pride of lions' which is another classic. just be groovy. i rule
Rating: Summary: A spellbinding tale of Ireland's visionary high-king. Review: Brian Boru was a visionary king with a dream of uniting all of Ireland. Like all leaders with a dream, Brian sets out to do what "has not been done before" and does so with a grace and dignity that has been unmatched in Ireland's history. Brian's love of Ireland is resplendent in every page of this book and the tale is so fascinating that it is physically impossible to put this book down once you have begun reading it. Morgan Llywelyn has a wonderful gift for making Brian come to life and staying with you long after the last word is read. I am now planning a trip to Ireland to visit Brian's tomb. I hope to bring home some of his courage and wisdom. Ireland was truly blesed to have such a leader as this.
