Rating: Summary: Dreary, banal addition to the body of trash fiction Review: As I plodded through this dismal novel, I found myself wondering if its author has ever, in the whole course of her existence, met an honest, decent, noble fellow creature. What kind of world does she occupy that this is her impression of humanity? Once again, Ms. Blume presents a tired, cynical chronicle of the lives of characters few of whom are nice enough for anyone to care much about. And sadly, she once again confuses shock value with originality. My first exposure to Ms. Blume was a child's book, in which she took it upon herself to enlighten her young readers as to certain misconceptions they might still hold about a certain cherished Christmas custom. I still cannot figure out why she did so, unless she thought she was breaking new ground. Apparently, she does not stop to consider why such "ground" had gone unbroken. In Summer Sisters, she again barges into areas most quality writers have had the delicacy to avoid. In vain, one wonders why. She is a writer of some talent; why does she "waste her spirit" on such tawdry rubbish? In sum, I cannot think of a single good reason to purchase this book. If I could figure out how to award it fewer than one star, I would have done so.
Rating: Summary: Didn't want it to ever end... Review: Not literary genius, but one of the best stories I've read in a long time - great characters whom you feel you know - great settings and a very unique way of giving each character the chance to let you know what they are thinking along the way. I haven't liked a book this well since "The Shell Seekers" by Pilcher or "The Colony" by Siddons. Find a quiet place free from obligations and cares and just have fun reading this one. I feel like I have just had a great summer vacation!
Rating: Summary: Loved it. Review: I am normally quite critical of anything on the best sellers list (hello, Girsham!) but this was a truly fabulous book. I read all of Judy Blume when I was little, and this really is just a grown up version of Just as Long as Were Together. I got very attached to the characters and when I was explaining it to a friend I almost found myself speaking as if I knew these people. I was sobbing by the end of the book--albeit I am a soft touch.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put down this book! Review: I read Judy Blume as a teen and decided to give Blume's Summer Sisters a try as an adult. I am a college educated 37 year old and would have read the book straight through except that I have a one-year old in the house and can't do anything without interruptions!. I could relate to so many of the references in this book because I am only 3 years older than the book's main characters. Blume captured and described the decades well which made the reading all the more satisfying. Was there alot of sex in the book? Yes, but so what. Summer Sisters is a very entertaining read for adults--I strongly disagree with those who say it is written for young teens. I wouldn't want my young teen reading it. It is a great book for adults. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable journey from adolesence to adulthood ! Review: Judy Blume paints a vivid protrait of a women's reflections on herself and her freespirted best friend from their first summer together to their last. A great work! I enjoyed it emensly! Just as good as her contributions to childrens literature.READ IT!
Rating: Summary: Could I have BEEN more disappointed? Review: I was so psyched when a Judy Blume adult novel came out, I loved her pre-teen books when I was younger. When Summer Sisters finally came out in paperback I bought it and was so disappointed. I don't see the difference between this one and all her teen books. A bunch of teenagers obsessed with sex? I can go watch Dawson's Creek if I want that.
Rating: Summary: I read it over and over Review: This has to have been one of the best books i have ever read. It has without a doubt become my all time favorite book. I was a fan of Judy Blume when i was younger and i'm happy to say she hasn't dissapointed me yet. i would reccomend this book to anyone
Rating: Summary: This book made me realize that I myself had a Summer Sister! Review: This was one of those books that you will want to never stop reading! You get involved in Vix and Caitlin's lives and you want them to live next door so that you can be apart of their wonderful but also depressing lives! I recommend that Best Friends read this book just to find out is you have a Summer Sister!
Rating: Summary: A good read until the end. Review: I remember reading Judy Blume as a kid so I was excited to hear she had a book out for adults. Although, I can see how some people would be disappointed with her "adult" writing style I felt the writing was appropriate considering much of the book is about two girls growing up from their teens to mid-twenties. The ending however, was quite disappointing. The author kept me interested for 90% of the book but the ending seemed to come out of nowhere. It was as if she had a deadline to meet and couldn't think of an appropriate ending so she threw in a few twists in an attempt to not be predictable. Instead, her ending was rushed and underdeveloped. It didn't seem to flow with the rest of the book. All in all it was a book with much promise but left much to be desired in the end.
Rating: Summary: A great summer read! Review: At first I thought this book was going to be too "fluffy" and without substance. Even though it is an easy and light read, it eventually gets you in the heart. For me, it brought a lot of old memories to the surface about my best friend during my adolesence. It made me sad that we didn't keep in touch.
