Rating: Summary: AN ABSOLUTE GEM!!! Review: As someone once said, "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion." This book is that and more! You will never forget Patty Jane and Harriet. If you loved "Steel Magnolias" you will love this book. Do yourself a favor, today, get this book!!
Rating: Summary: GREAT!! A true look at the ups and downs of life. Review: I read this book several years ago. It stuck with me like a good friend. So, when my town started a book club I had no regrets recommending this as one of our books. Everyone loved it. We all laughed, cryed, and remembered just how fun life really can be.
Rating: Summary: a great read Review: I really enjoyed this book. While it was a bit predictable, it was such a heartwarming story. It remined me of Steel Magnolia's with a little more grit.
Rating: Summary: a "home-spun" saga women's lives in the mid-century midwest Review: The book covers decades in the lives of Patty Jane, her daughter, her sister, and her mother-in-law. The women go through various crises and develop a loving, supportive family as well becoming stronger, more independent, and a resource for growth in the women around them. I judged the book only average because I felt like I never really got to know the insides of the characters. It was all told from the outside -- I knew nothing more than I would know if I were merely observing these people from a distance.
Rating: Summary: just a good, heartwarming read Review: A sweet story of two sisters and the various adversities andhappinesses faced by them during their lifetimes. While it is mainlyjust a good read, there is also an element of suspense in the disappearance of Thor.
Rating: Summary: Heartwarming enough to make you shed a tear or two Review: A good book that warms your heart and makes you feel for all the characters. It tells us the story of Patty Jane and her loved ones. They share good times, and help each other through bad times and each time when the worst is over and new happiness is found, it makes you feel that, to quote, Patty Jane's sister Harriet on her wedding day, after she kicked her alcoholism "those days were not as bad as this day was good."
Rating: Summary: Upbeat novel of change, survival, and sisterhood in MN Review: I loved this Lake-Woebegone-style tale of Patty Jane Dobbins, her uncomplicated loving of husband, child, sister, mother-in-law and more, her take on midwest culture and the beauty parlor we'd all like to really go to. Characters are unique, one truly cares about them, the Minnesota setting is right on, and the generosity of faith is refreshing. It was my favorite summer read.
Rating: Summary: Truly one of the best books I have ever read!!! Review: I just happened upon this book at the store and thought it looked good. Little did I know that it would end up being one of the best books I have ever read. I have lent it to everybody I know and they also enjoyed it. This should definitely be an Oprah pick!!
Rating: Summary: I cried my eyes out and laughed my head off Review: Anyone with a sister, or anyone who loves people, humor, and life, will love this book. Thank you Lorna
Rating: Summary: You'll laugh, you'll cry... Review: Reading Patty Jane's House of Curl was like a rollercoaster of emotional ups and downs. You'll cheer when she has a little happiness, you'll sigh when she's troubled, and you'll cry when she suffers. Along with her sister, mother-in-law, and daughter, Patty Jane learns how to take what life has dealt and becomes a stronger, loving friend, mother and wife because of it
