Rating: Summary: COMING-OF-AGE IN THE 90'S AIN'T EASY, BUT CAN BE IRIE. Review: THIS COMING-OF-AGE NOVEL IS THE FIRST BOOK EVER THAT REALLY CAPTURED MY 15-YEAR-OLD SON'S IMAGINATION. 'CATCHER IN THE RYE' WAS "PRETTY GOOD" AND "LORD OF THE FLIES" WAS "OK," BUT HE COULDN'T PUT THIS MOST EXCELLENT STORY DOWN. NEITHER COULD HIS DAD. THE NARRATOR, 'BONE' IS 14, HOMELESS AND HAS A HISTORY OF ABUSE BUT MANAGES TO FIND A MORAL COMPASS DESPITE HIS BLEAK ENVIRONMENT . BOTH BONE AND HIS RASTA MENTOR, I-MAN, SPEAK IN AUTHENTIC VOICES. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR TEENAGERS AND THEIR PARENTS. BANKS IS THE MAN.
Rating: Summary: A Must-Read Review: There are so few books in the world that truly depict the life of a teenage runaway spiriling out of control. Most of them have been non-fiction. This books claim to fame is that it is a fiction story that allows the reader to get so involved in the character that it becomes non-fiction. Read this book, it's worth it.
Rating: Summary: A most original view of a boy comming of age. Review: Rule of the bone was recommended to me by my sister a few years after it came out. After reading I was so greatly influenced by Russle Bank's writing flow and ability to attatch me to the "Bone" that I am constantly racing to read his other works. Rule of The Bone reminds me of a modern-day Catcher in the Rye. Only twice as powerful and more exciting.
Rating: Summary: Awesome!! Review: I have already read this book 4 times. It's a great book for a teenager to read, also a great lesson on life.
Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!! Review: "You'll probably think I'm making a lot of this up just to make me sound better than I really am or smarter or even luckier but I'm not. Besides, a lot of things that've happened to me in my life so far which I'll get to pretty soon'll make me sound evil or just plain dumb or the tragic victim of circumstances."(Russell Banks) RULE of the BONE is explosive and breath taking, the words grab hold of your heart and mind and drag you out of reality and into the printed page. Russell Banks has cleverly recreated and combined two of America's most famous pieces of fictional literature, Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, and J.D. Salangers The Catcher in the Rye. RULE of the BONE is a nomadic story of intense adventure and gut wrenching tragedy. While reading this book you will find yourself turning inside out with emotion as you travel side by side an imaginary comrade. The herbal powwows and intimate conversations leave you with a feeling of safety, but the constant travel keeps you on your toes. Growing up in a some what sheltered society in the Midwest I had trouble grasping a life of abundance and independence. Russell Banks creates a physical and sociological landscape of creative expression that lets you into the characters' lives. Russell seems to get into your psyche and crack open a childish feeling of curiosity and purified wisdom. While reading this book I felt more compelled to read than any other time in my life. The highly detailed, but easy reading novel seems to flow by like a waterfall of words. I highly recommend this book to all walks of life. While reflecting on my past reading experiences I realized this one I enjoyed the most.
Rating: Summary: Impossible to put down.. Heart moving events.. Breathtaking Review: Brilliant one of his best books so far. Impossible to put down. Students across the nation must read. Rule of the Bone is a soul scearching experience for Chappie.Opens your eyes and makes you see reality the way it truly is.
Rating: Summary: classic coming of age story Review: Well written a real page turner you won't be able to put this one down
Rating: Summary: an astounding piece of literature Review: I must say, I've never been much of a 'bookworm' -- but Rule of the Bone had me hooked. I couldn't put it down: my math teacher even scolded me... The coming of age story of Bone was surprisingly captivating and truthful -- Bank's skill to capture human behaviour is spellbinding. The main character, Bone, who is troubled teen who escapes in the 'wrong ways' is truly a role model for young people everywhere. Adult critics of this book have labelled him as a bad example, but they have failed to look past the literal level of Bone's actions. Bank's paints a truthful, and somewhat frightening picture of what happens to a person under pressure; a boy who has a goodness in him, he's just been through some hard times. Rule of the Bone is a definate read, and I would reccomend it to anyone who would like a taste of literature that is uniquely different. Bank's book challenges the more conservative literary techniques with an amazingly truthful and contemporary tale of humanity.
Rating: Summary: A BOOK THAT EMBODIES THE WHOLE ASPECT OF LIFE, A CLASSIC Review: I AM 14 AND READ IT WHEN I WAS 13. IT HELPED ME THROUGH TURBULANT TIMES. THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR EVERY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ACROSS THE NATION!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Frighteningly (yet wonderfully) Honest!!! Review: So, I picked up this book to read so I could write an essay and if I won it would look good on my college application, right? Well, I fell deep into the words of Russell Banks and finally identified with a character who is not the evil villain that so many other "adult" critics in famous magazines are saying (although to tell you the truth they're more immature as writers than I've witnessed from the young). It makes you wonder if those people have even read the entire book because they fail to realize the effects of abuse on children. To tell you the truth, this book is almost like being tipsy because you are tossed into this dreamlike world that is so devastatingly cruel that you have to escape somewhere! I recommend this novel to anyone who is tired of traditional writing and wants to explore something that challenges the unspoken yet totally defined, censorship put upon authors today. This book will make others uncomfortable, no doubt, but the truth is not always what we want to hear.
